DURR NAMED ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SEVENTH TIME Durr was named ACC Player of the Week on Nov. 12 after averaging 28.5 points per game in wins at Western Kentucky and Chattanooga. This marks the seventh time she has been named ACC POW and she earned the honor four times last season. In her final season opener, Durr scored the Cards first 11 points and finished with 33 to set UofL s all-time record for points in an opener. She scored her 33 points in just 21 minutes, shooting 12-21 from the floor and 7-15 from 3-point range. She followed that by scoring 24 points at Chattanooga, 14 of which came during a 30-10 third quarter. She finished 7-14 from the floor, 5-10 from deep, with three assists and four rebounds. THIRD QUARTER BURSTS In two games, UofL has outscored opponents 61-18 in the third quarter. They led WKU 54-43 at halftime and then took control of the game by outscoring the Hilltoppers 31-8 in the third. At Chattanooga, they led 28-21 at half and won the third quarter 30-10 to open up the game. LOFTY EXPECTATIONS Returning all-american Asia Durr, along with returning starters Arica Carter, Sam Fuehring and Jazmine Jones, the Cardinals were picked fourth in the USA Today/Coaches rankings, which set a school record, and were selected fifth in the Associated Press preseason poll to tie a school record. 2018-19 CARDINALS BASKETBALL WALZ GETS WIN NO. 300 Already the winningest coach in Louisville history, Coach Walz recorded his 300th career win (301-96) with a 102-80 victory at WKU on Tuesday. Walz led the Cards to a program-best 36-3 in 2017-18 record despite returning only two starters from a team that went 29-8 and reached the Sweet 16. UofL won its first 20 games last year, which set a program record for consecutive wins to start the year, and following its 100-67 win over then-no. 2 Notre Dame, moved up to No. 2 in the AP poll, its highest ranking ever. The win over No. 13 Oregon State in the regional final gave Walz his 53rd win over an AP Top 25 team and his 41st in the last eight years. WINNING THE OPENER With the 102-80 win over WKU, UofL improved to 10-2 in season openers under head coach Jeff Walz. All-time, the Cardinals are 25-19 in first games of the year. The 102 points, 38 field goals and 16 3-pointers made were all highs in season openers for Walz s teams. CHOSEN SECOND IN ACC PRESEASON POLLS The Cardinals were picked to finish second in both the Atlantic Coast Conference s Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches polls. Durr was named ACC Player of the Year last season after leading Louisville to a sweep of ACC regular season and tournament titles. She finished the year averaging 18.7 points, while knocking down 115 3-pointers, which ranked 13th in the country, and shooting 41.5 percent from beyond the arc. GAME 3: AT BOISE STATE NOV. 19, 2018 HEAD COACH JEFF WALZ Head coach Jeff Walz, in his 12th season as a head coach, has compiled a 301-96 (.758) record as the Cardinals leader. He has led Louisville to eight NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, three trips to Final 4 (2009, 2013, 2018), two of which culminated with NCAA runner-up finishes (2009, 2013). Walz, who is averaging 27.2 wins per season, became the winningest coach in program history in 2013-14. He also has the most 20-win seasons in school history (10) and the top-seven entries for most victories in a season (36 in 2017-18, 34 in 2008-09; 33 in 2013-14; and 29 in 2012-13 and 2016-17). Hired on March 27, 2007, the Bluegrass State native took the program to its first NCAA Sweet 16 and it culminated with Louisville earning the No. 12 ranking in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. For his efforts, Walz was named the WBCA Maggie Dixon Rookie Coach of the Year. The Drysdale award recognizes the top shooting guard, while the Leslie award recognizes top center. They were both also recognized on the Citizen Naismith Trophy Award Watch List. As a junior, Fuehring ranked third on the team with 9.9 points and second with 5.4 rebounds. She took a team-high 40 charges and 10 times recorded multiple charges in a game, including six in the win at Ohio State. She was named to the ACC All- Tournament Team, Lexington Regional All-Tournament Team and ACC All-Academic Team. ANOTHER 20-WIN SEASON After going 36-3 in 2017-18, head coach Jeff Walz now has 10 20-win seasons in 11 years, adding to what was already the most in school history. The Cardinals were listed on all 31 ballots, receiving 664 points, including one third-place vote. The ranking is tied for the highest preseason position in program history. The Cards were previously slotted fifth before both the 2013-14 and 2016-17 seasons. They remained fifth in the AP poll this week. They were rated No. 4 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, which marks the highest preseason ranking in program history. 2018-19 CARDINALS BASKETBALL NONCONFERENCE SUCCESS Head coach Jeff Walz has compiled an impressive 136-33 record (.805) against nonconference foes in his 12 years at the helm. Last year, UofL went 14-1 in non-conference play, which marked the third time they have recorded just one non-conference loss under Walz. Two times previously - in 2008-09 and 2013-14 - he rolled through nonconference play with just one loss, sporting 13-1 and 12-1 records. COACHING STAFF CONSISTENCY For the sixth straight season, Walz has the same assistants with Stephanie Norman (12th year), Sam Williams (8th) and Sam Purcell (6th year). He helped the team earn an at-large bid to the 1997 NCAA Tournament after going 22-9 to earn a share of the Sun Belt regular-season title. The next season, he moved on to Nebraska after Sanderford was offered the head coaching position. HITTING THE CENTURY MARK Louisville opened the season with 102 points, which marked most points in opener. The previous high was 101 vs. Loyola Chicago in 2013. Last year, they scored 100-plus points twice, a schoolrecord 115 vs. Murray State on 11/24/17 (W, 115-51) and vs. Notre Dame on 1/11/18 (W, 100-67). UofL is 22-0 all-time when scoring 100-plus. ON THE ROAD AGAIN The Cards have won 147 games away from home since head coach Jeff Walz s arrival in 2007-08. UNVEILS ASIA25.COM The University of Louisville announced the unveiling of Asia25.com, a new website to promote senior guard Asia Durr for National Player of the Year. U of L launched the website by telling the story of Durr her journey to Louisville and the accomplishments she has already achieved. A series of short 15-second videos were released throughout the day on social media to raise awareness for Asia25.com, where the University of Louisville will continue to house her National Player of the Year campaign. MELTING POT Louisville s 2018-19 roster continues last year s pattern of being diverse. Of the 13 studentathletes on its roster, eight are from different states (California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, New Jersey, Pennsylvania). Yacine Diop is the only international player and she is from Dakar, Senegal. ARICA CARTER OPENS SEASON WITH CAREER HIGH POINTS Redshirt senior Arica Carter didn t start vs. WKU, which ended a stretch of 64 consecutive starts in games that she has played. Last season, she started all 38 games that she played. The last time that she played, but didn t start was 12/10/15 at Kentucky. Despite not starting, she scored a career-high 19 points in 19 minutes, shooting 6-10 from the floor and 4-7 from 3-point range. She tied a career-high with four threes, a feat she has accomplished three other times. She was named Lexington Region All-Tournament Team and ACC All-Tournament team a year ago. She missed the previous year with a groin injury. She shot 38.6 percent from 3-point range and connected on 49 3-pointers after entering last season with a career 16 made threes. 2018-19 CARDINALS BASKETBALL SAM I AM Senior Sam Fuehring is averaging 6.0 points and is shooting 6-9 from the floor after two games. She was named Lexington Region All-Tournament Team and ACC All-Tournament Team a year ago. She ranked third in the ACC with a 58.2 shooting percentage and her 57.4 shooting percentage on the season ranked fifth all-time in program history. She took a team-high 40 charges and 10 times recorded multiple charges, including six in the win over Ohio State. JONESIN FOR MORE JAZZ Junior Jazmine Jones led the team with seven assists and 26 minutes in the opener at WKU. She then led the team with seven rebounds at UTC. She was named to the ACC All-Tournament team a year ago. She started all 39 games last year, joining Myisha Hines-Allen as the only players to do so. She ranked fourth on team with 8.9 points and 4.6 rebounds. EVANS LOOKS TO BUILD ON SOLID FRESHMAN YEAR Sophomore Dana Evans recorded nine assists at UTC, which was one shy of her career-high of 10 at Kentucky (12/17/17). She was named to the ACC All-Freshman team a year ago. She led all ACC freshman, ranked 11th in the league and second on the team with 3.5 assists per game. YAYA OPENS UOFL CAREER WITH DOUBLE-DOUBLE Redshirt senior Yacine Diop recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in just 18 minutes in her debut as a Cardinal. It marked the 15th double-double of her career. A graduate transfer from Pitt and member of Senegal s national team, Diop led the Panthers with 15.7 points and 6.4 rebounds a year ago. She tied a career high with 26 points against Louisville on Jan. 18. She departed Pitt as the 18th leading scorer of all-time with 1,093 points. IN NOVEMBER Louisville is 61-13 in the month of November under head coach Jeff Walz. UOFL S SUCCESS BY DECADES With Walz at the helm of the program, the Cardinals are averaging 26 victories per season and attained their 800th win (848-487) in program history with the victory over Clemson on Jan. 26, 2017. 2018-19 CARDINALS BASKETBALL BEST ROAD RECORD IN SCHOOL HISTORY, 8-0 IN ACC ROAD GAMES The Cards wrapped up road play with a 13-1 record in 2017-18, their best road mark in program history. They finished 12-2 in 2013-14 and 2008-09. At 8-0 on the road in league play, the Cards wrapped ACC play with a perfect 8-0 road record for the 2nd time in three years. They also went 8-0 on the road in ACC in 2015-16, when they finished 15-1. Overall, they have won 10 straight ACC road games. UofL s 13-game road winning streak dating back to 2016-17, which tied the longest road winning streak in program history, came to a close with the 69-58 loss at UConn last season. They also won 13 straight road games from 12/18/15 to 12/21/16. Prior to the defeat to the Huskies, their last road loss was an 85-66 setback at Notre Dame on Feb. 6, 2017. WELCOME TO SPORTSCENTER Senior guard Asia Durr was one of seven Division I women s basketball players and 10 participants invited to Women s Basketball National Media Day, hosted by the NCAA and ESPN, on ESPN s campus in Bristol, Conn. It marked the second straight season that she was invited. Her schedule included a one-on-one sit-down with ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe, a fast-paced interview with ESPN analyst Rebecca Lobo, a one-hour press conference with national media, an appearance on the Around the Rim podcast, hosted by LaChina Robinson, and more. USA USA USA! Asia Durr, along with former card Angel McCoughtry, has been selected to the 2017-20 USA Basketball Women s National Team Pool, from which the 2018 USA World Cup Team is expected to be selected.. This past summer, Jeff Walz served as head coach of the U19 National Team and led Team USA to a gold medal in Mexico City. Durr also competed in the National 3X3 Tournament at the end of last season. MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME Louisville added three freshmen, all of which are Kentucky natives, in Seygan Robins (Mercer County, Miss Kentucky Basketball and back-to-back state champion), Mykasa Robinson (Ashland), Molly Lockhart (Louisville Butler). The Cards now have five Kentucky natives on the roster with Lindsey Duvall (Bullitt East) and Jessica Laemmle (Mercy Academy Louisville). CARDINALS WELCOME IN GREEN AND PARKER Louisville welcomes in Nyah Green, a 6-foot-1 guard from Allen, Texas, and Ramani Parker, a 6-4 forward from Fresno, Calif. <Green comes to Louisville as the No. 12-ranked player in the class of 2019, according to espnw HoopGurlz. The five-star prospect is tabbed as the seventh-best player at the guard position. She is ranked seventh overall and as the third-best guard by Prospects Nation. She led Bishop Lynch to a TAPPS 6A state runner-up last season, averaging 18.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 37 games. At the conclusion of the season, she was named TAPPS 1-6A MVP. <Parker is a four-star prospect and is ranked 99th overall in the class of 2019, according to espnw HoopGurlz. She is rated No. 13 at the forward position by espnw. She is rated 29th overall and as the seventh-best forward by Prospects Nation. Parker played for Central High School in Fresno, Calif., before transferring to Montverde Academy in Montverde, Fla., for her senior season.
