Syracuse enters the season ranked 9th in both national polls. 2. Coach Boeheim is just 10 wins from 900 in his career. 3. Coach Boeheim is 12 victories shy of second on the all-time Division I list. 4. The Orange opens its season at The Battle On The Midway in San Diego. 5. Syracuse enters the season with a streak of four straight NCAA Tournament berths. The Battle On The Midway Two top 20 teams will open their seasons on Friday, November 9, when #9/9 Syracuse faces #20/20 San Diego State in The Battle On The Midway. The game is scheduled to be contested on the deck of the USS Midway in San Diego. Syracuse and San Diego State were both NCAA Tournament Teams last March. The Orange reached the Elite Eight before losing to Ohio State. The Aztecs were defeated in the second round by North Carolina State. The programs feature two of the most successful coaches in the Division I ranks. Both mentors have gudied teams to the NCAA champsionship -- Jim Boeheim with Syracuse and Steve Fisher with Michigan. Boeheim ranks second among active Division I coaches in wins (890) and is 890-overall. It is his 37th season at the Syracuse helm. Fisher is 442-242 in 22 seasons as a head coach. The Orange and the Aztecs have met once previously, in a 2007 NIT game at the Dome. The Orange won, 80-64. Syracuse won both of its 2012 exhibition games, defeating Pace, 99-63, and Bloomsburg, 103-60. San Diego State also posted an unblemished exhibition record. In-Season Media Services Triche Earns Cover Shot An action shot of senior guard Brandon Triche graced the cover of a regional edition of Sports Illustrated that hit newsstands on November 7. The issue featured the magazine s college basketball preview. Sports Illustrated placed Syracuse 11th in its top twenty. Now he stands just 10 victories away from 900 at Syracuse and 12 triumphs from tying Bob Knight for second on the all-time Division I list. He guided the Orange to a 64-61 victory against Georgetown on February 8, 2012, the 880th triumph of his career. He moved past legendary North Carolina Coach Dean Smith for third on the all-time Division I wins list. Smith also had held the standard for wins at one school. Boeheim s 877th triumph, at Cincinnati, pushed him past former Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp into fourth. On February 25 he picked up the 400th BIG EAST Conference triumph of his tenure in a 71-69 victory at Connecticut. The Book On Boeheim Boeheim owns a career record of 890-304 (.745). He is second among active Division I coaches in wins, trailing only Mike Krzyzewski (Duke). Boeheim is third on the all-time Division I victory list and is 10th among active Division I coaches in winning percentage. Only Jim Phelan (Mt. St. Mary s) has logged more than Boeheim s 1,193 games for coaches who have served at only one institution. The 2012 NCAA berth gave SU 35 post-season appearances under Boeheim, including 29 NCAA Tournaments. His SU teams have won 21-or-more games in 31 seasons. He has guided his alma mater to the NCAA title game three times, winning it for the first time in 2003. Boeheim s 50th Anniversary At Syracuse Boeheim walked on the Syracuse campus as a freshman 50 years ago -- in 1962 -- and he has been associated with the University ever since as a student, then assistant coach and finally as head coach.
