JOHNNY JONES Head Coach 5th Year at LSU (17th Year as Head Coach) The burning desire and passion, combined with the love of his alma mater, has made Johnny Jones and LSU a strong fit together as he enters his fifth year as head coach. Jones has proven his recruiting ability with multiple top five ranked classes and 80 wins in four years at LSU, the most four-year win total by any head coach in school history. In fact, his first three wins in the 2016-17 season will push him past both C. C. Stroud and Press Maravich into fourth on the LSU Coaches win list behind only the three longest tenured coaches in school history who combined to handle the head coaching position for a period of 65 years. More notably, all four years he has posted non-losing seasons in the difficult Southeastern Conference and his 40 league wins is the second best start among present league coaches who have been on the job at least four years. But there are numbers that have to be taken into account when it comes to Jones first-four years at LSU: 13 Number of graduates in four years Every basketball player that has reached their senior season with the program under Jones has graduated from LSU, including three who returned to school during his tenure. 1 No. 1 NBA Draft selection (Ben Simmons, 2016) Simmons became just the second LSU player to be picked No. 1 in the draft, joining Shaquille O Neal (who Coach Jones was on the bench for as an assistant at LSU). 4 NBA Draft selections last three years. -- Johnny O Bryant III (2014, Milwaukee); Jarell Martin (1st rd, Memphis, 2015)) and Jordan Mickey (Boston, 2015); and, Ben Simmons (No. 1, Philadelphia) in 2016. 80 Wins (three shy of moving into fourth all-time at LSU) 2 Post-season appearances 9 All-SEC selections 3 -- Ranking in college basketball in 2016 in increase in average attendance from 8,897 in 2015 to 11,383 this past season. $200,000 Money raised for Baton Rouge area flood relief by the Shaquille O Neal-Coach Johnny Jones Golf Tournament. For Jones, just the fifth LSU alum to hold the top position in the men s basketball program and the third to have played and serve as head coach, his beliefs about reaching out to fans and giving them an exciting style of basketball to watch in the Maravich Center has been a strong selling point to fans and recruits alike. Jones, in his coaching career, has aimed to put teams on the floor that will play hard from start to finish and play a style of basketball that makes players want to come to LSU to showcase their talent in a team concept. His teams have averaged well over 70 points a game the last four years and has shown the ability to rally when necessary, including 10 times when down by five or more at the half. Jones has a job that he has been preparing for years to accept and that call to be the head coach at LSU came on April 13, 2012. He returned to a place he had spent many years playing and coaching. It was the dream job scenario and what he did after leaving LSU the first time prepared him to make this return successful. Jones believes in one of the long-time philosophies of LSU basketball HIT Hard. Intelligent. Together. It s a philosophy that LSU players learn very quickly that if they play hard, play with intelligence and play together, a lot of good things can happen. Throw in Family and you have the mantra of LSU Basketball under Johnny Jones. It s a family that has worked together at such times as flood relief, unloading a giant 18-wheeler of supplies from Shaq for a local area, or making an annual visit to the local hospital children s wing to sing Christmas carols to patients. It s reading in school to kids or visiting and learning from children at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired. It has been that way since day one for Coach Jones as he has gone out of its way to embrace all aspects of this community. This is Jones third career head coaching position as he served as the interim head coach at the University of Memphis during the 1999-2000 season and began his run as the head coach at the University of North Texas prior to the 2001-02 season. The Mean Green advanced to four of the last six Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship games, which included each of the final three seasons Jones was the head coach there (2010, 2011, 2012). Under Jones, the Mean Green averaged 21 wins per year over his last six seasons which included a school record 24 wins in 2010 and a pair of SBC titles and NCAA Tournament trips. When Johnny Jones suited up for his first game as an LSU Tiger against Colgate in the Great Alaskan Shootout on Nov. 28, 1980, it would mark the first of 121 games that he would play for LSU. Then the player would turn assistant coach and be on the bench with Coach Brown for another 407 contests. Jones is the only person in LSU history to both play (1981) and coach (1986, assistant) in an NCAA Final Four. After his Tigers went to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, he became the first person to play for the Tigers in an NCAA Tournament, serve as an assistant coach for LSU in the NCAA Tournament and to be LSU head coach in an NCAA Tournament game. After Coach Brown s retirement following the 1996-97 season, Jones moved to Memphis to serve as Associated Head Coach in 1998 and 1999. Jones was named the interim head coach at Memphis just prior to the 1999-00 season and then spent a year as an assistant coach in the SEC with Alabama (2001). He was named the head coach at North Texas on April 16, 2001, where he stayed until the LSU job became his in April 2012. LAST TIME OUT -- SOUTH CAROLINA 88, LSU 63 (FEB. 1, BATON ROUGE) No. 19 South Carolina was able to take charge of the contest early Wednesday night at the Maravich Center and sent LSU to its eighth consecuite loss. South Carolina scored 50 first-half points, shooting 57.6 percent from the floor (19-of-33) despite shooting 3-of-12 from the arc. LSU shot 40 percent for the game (24-of-60) with six treys. LSU had only 9-of-14 free throws, while South Carolina made 21-of-31. One of the big differences saw the Gamecocks get 34 points off LSU s season high 22 turnovers, to just 12 points off SC turnovers for LSU. Brandon Sampson had a strong game for LSU with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting with two treys. Skylar Mays added 11. Wayde Sims just missed his first college double double with eight points and a season high 11 rebounds. Former walk-on, now scholarship senior, Brandon Eddlestone, came in to play 11 minutes to help shore up the front line and received raves from Coach JohnnyJones after scoring six points with four rebounds. BLAKENEY LOOKS TO REGAIN MARAVICH CENTER FORM The last two home games proved to be difficult for sophomore Antonio Blakeney, a place where the Florida native has had good success in his two years of play at LSU. 2016-17 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

After eight straight home games, Blakeney was just 2-of-10 from the field with four points at home against Florida in Jan. 25. Then the Tigers played at Texas Tech and Blakeney had his 16th career 20-point game with 23. But Wednesday night back at home, Blakeney could only get nine points in the loss to South Carolina. Blakeney now has 16 games of 20 or more points and since the start of the 2010-11 seasons, breaking it down to those that have scored 24 points or more for LSU, according to College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com: Jarell Martin (2013-15) 7; Antonio Blakeney (2015-17) 6; Jordan Mickey (2013-15) 6; Keith Hornsby (2014-16) 5; Johnny O Bryant (2012-14) 5 Blakeney is averaging 32.6 minutes per game, 4th in the league. He is now averaging 16.0 points per game and is 5th in the SEC in scoring. For the season he is shooting 45.5 percent from the field (126-277) and that is 10th in the SEC. DUOP REATH LSU s first-year junior-college transfer forward Duop Reath saw his five-game double figure scoring streak end against South Carolina (2/1) as he had just four points in the game. In January he posted two double doubles (his third and fourth of the year) -- Mississippi State game (1/7) with 19 points and 13 rebounds (7 offensive); and, most recently, at Texas Tech (1/28) with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The five-game double figure scoring streak was the second time this year Reath had five consecutive games in double figures. He is averaging 13.3 points per game and 6.0 rebounds along with 1.7 blocks a game. He is 18th in the SEC in scoring, 14th in rebounds, 2nd in FG percentage (117-of-214, 54.7%) and 6th in blocks. The big man from Perth made it a good debut on Nov. 12 as he became the sixth LSU player in the Johnny Jones era to post a game of 20 points and 10 rebounds in a 91-69 win over Wofford Reath posted 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting (5-7 FT) and 14 rebounds... The other players who have had at least one 20-10 game in their careers during the Coach Jones era and the number of times accomplished: Duop Reath -- 2016-17 1; Ben Simmons 2015-16 3; Jordan Mickey 2014-15 8; Jarell Martin 2014-15 5; Johnny O Bryant III 2012-14 5 Shavon Coleman 2012-13 1 TWO-POINTERS AN LSU OFFENSIVE STAPLE Throughout the season, the two-point field goal has been one of the staples of the LSU offense with LSU shooting 50.7 percent inside the arc The Tigers average 43.7 points inside the arc and that is 13th in the nation according to TEAMRANKINGS. com LSU is getting 58.5 percent of its points from inside the arc. That is up from 54.7 percent in the 2016 season and ranks 10th highest percentage in Division I. TONIGHT S GAME SECOND MEETING VS. TEXAS A&M, 8 PM LSU and Texas A&M will meet for the second time this year. The Aggies come in after a loss on Tuesday night to Vanderbilt, 68-54, in a game at College Station. LSU leads the series, 18-17, but A&M has won the last two including the opening meeting this year. The Tigers are 13-2 in games played in Baton Rouge. Billy Kennedy, the Texas A&M coach, is a Louisiana native who served as head coach at Centenary in Shreveport and Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond as part of his head coaching tenures prior to Texas A&M. On Jan. 11, A&M was a 92-62 winner over LSU at Reed Arena in College Station. Antonio Blakeney was the only player in double figures for the Tigers to score 17 points. LSU shot 36.8 percent (25-68) and 3-of-14 from the arc (21.4 percent). The Aggies shot 56.7 percent (34-of-60) as Tonny Trocha-Morelos and Admon Gilder each scored 14 points as five A&M players were in double figures. A&M out rebounded LSU, 47-32. BRANDON EDDLESTONE For three years, he was a walk-on who got to see occasional action late in games, but this season prior to the start of the year, Brandon Eddlestone was given a scholarship by the LSU coaching staff. Eddlestone only saw one minute of action in three games this season, but things took a turn on Wednesday night as Johnny Jones, not getting the play from his forwards that he was hoping for, put Eddlestone in the game during the final four minutes of the first half. Eddlestone was diving on the floor, keeping balls alive by tapping them around and then got an offensive rebound for a bucket. In the second half, he would play seven more minutes and got the ball on the right wing and buried a three-pointer much to the delight of the crowd at the Maravich Center. He finished with six points and four rebounds in 11 minutes, all career highs. Eddlestone hails from Slidell, Louisiana and Northshore High School and is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. SKYLAR MAYS Skylar Mays of Baton Rouge came off the bench against South Carolina (2/1) and had his eighth double figure game of the season with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting that including two treys. Mays high game was 22 points at Arkansas (1/21) In the Arkansas game he had six assists and two steals in 32 minutes, with 7 assists and one steal in a season high 36 minutes versus Florida. He has started 15 games and is averaging 21.9 minutes per game. Mays is averaging 75.9 percent from the line this season (41-of-54) and is 28-of-36 (78 percent) in SEC games. Mays is averaging 7.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Since the start of SEC play (Dec. 29) and including the Texas Tech game, he has raised his average from 4.9 to 7.4 points. Mays has had six double figure games in SEC play. Mays was 5-of-9 from the field and played 23 minutes with two steals. Mays has 10 games of four assists or more highlighted by 11 assists and just one turnover in 23 minutes against Houston (11/29). Mays 11 assists in the win over Houston was the most by an LSU player in the Johnny Jones era as head coach and he became the fifth player in that time span to record 10 or more assists joining Ben Simmons, Tim Quarterman, Josh Grady and Charles Carmouche. Mays is ninth in overall assist average in the SEC at 3.8. Mays has 80 assists and 42 turnovers, a 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio which is sixth in the league. His 35-to-18 assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.9 was fifth in league games. Mays played at University High in Baton Rouge before transferring to Findlay Prep for his senior season. BRANDEN JENKINS Junior college transfer Branden Jenkins was finally able to get on the floor in the Vandy game (12/29). He played 19 minutes and hit 2-of-6 field goals including a trey in scoring five points. He next saw good minutes in the Mississippi State game (1/7), playing 13 and against scoring five points. He started the games versus A&M (1/11) and Alabama (1/14) and had four assists in the Alabama game (1/14). Jenkins was discovered to have an issue in his leg during his preseason physical that needed surgery and so he was unable to play in the first 11 games. Jenkins, who hails from the Chicago suburb of Maywood, Illinois, averaged 15.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists at Lee College in 2015-16. TIGERS HAVE LOCAL CONNECTION STRONG AGAIN The Tigers have a Baton Rouge connection working again this season with scholarship players sophomore Brandon Sampson and freshmen Skylar Mays and Wayde Sims joined by senior Brandon Bridgewater and walk-on Reed Vial hailing from Baton Rouge. Another walk-on, Marshall Graves, prepped in Baton Rouge (at U-High) but is from Ponchatoula, Louisiana... In all, the 14-player LSU roster has eight players from the state of Louisiana. JALYN PATTERSON Junior Jalyn Patterson, who has been featured primarily at the off-guard position during his first two years and who is still in that role at times this season, has started 10 games for LSU, including the last seven. Patterson has had 11 games of five assists or more during the season, topped by the eight against North Florida (11/18) and 7 in the Bahamas against VCU (11/25). Patterson had seven assists in the VCU game, but has also shown a guard s rebounding mentality with nine boards against Wichita State (11/23) and seven in the ODU win (11/24). He has posted six assists twice in the league against Vanderbilt (12/29) and Mississippi State (1/7). He is now averaging 6.2 points per game to go with 3.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. In the last 10 games, he has raised his average 1.4 points per game. He has made 21 treys. Patterson needs 10 assists to become the 32nd LSU player to have 200 career assists and just one steal to become the 26th player at LSU to grab 100 steals. In SEC games, Patterson has 38 assists and 15 turnovers for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5, fourth in the league BRANDON SAMPSON Brandon Sampson had the best offensive effort of the game on Wednesday night as he had 16 points to lead the Tigers against South Carolina. Sampson hit 6-of-10 field goals, including 2-of-4 from the three-point range. It was his 11th double figure game of the season. Those who traveled or watched the five game exhibition tour to Australia in August 2015, saw what Brandon Sampson was capable of as he averaged double figures and was shooting from the FIBA international three-point line without problem. But it never quite transferred to the last regular season as little nagging injuries slowed him at times and the Madison Prep (Baton Rouge) star averaged just 4.0 points in 13.2 minutes per game. This year, Sampson has started 16 games and is averaging 25.6 minutes per game, 10.5 points and 2.9 rebounds. He is 80-of-164 from the field (48.8%) with 27 treys. His most impressive game by far this year was the 30 minutes in the Old Dominion (11/24) win when he hit 7-of-10 field goals with a trey and helped seal the game as part of his 9-of-9 effort at the free throw line. It all added up to a career high of 24 points, topping the 18 he had a year ago twice with one of those coming in a neutral site tournament in Brooklyn. Against Charleston (12/19), he posted his second 20-point game, hitting 8-of-12 field goal attempts. KIERAN HAYWARD Freshman Kieran Hayward has been able in some games to find his mark He played a season tying high of 17 minutes against Texas Southern (12/17), scoring 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting that included two treys with three rebounds. He poured in a trey to close out a long scoring run for LSU in the Mizzou win. He again had 8 points with two treys and two free throws in 14 minutes against Mississippi State (1/7). Hayward was back in double figure minutes, playing 13 at Auburn (1/14). He had a season high of five rebounds in that game. Hayward is now averaging 1.6 points, 1.3 rebounds and 9.5 minutes per game for the 17 games he has entered. WAYDE SIMS Sims, the freshman from Baton Rouge, showed his ability on the boards against South Carolina (2/1) as he grabbed 11 rebounds as part of an 8-point, 11-board evening. But the son of a former LSU player has proven in the last five games to be pretty good from the field as well: 2016-17 LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

At Auburn 2-of-2 At Arkansas 4-of-4 Florida 5-of-5 At Texas Tech 4-of-8 S. Carolina 4-of-8 5-game totals: 19-of-27 Sims has had six double figure games scoring, including 12 versus Florida (1/25) and 10 at Texas Tech (1/28) with a season high of 14 in his first SEC game versus Vanderbilt (12/29). LSU was down 20 in the final 10 minutes to Vandy (12/29) when Sims came off the bench and he proceeded to hit four treys between the 8:15 and 6:53 mark to help trim the Commodore lead to nine. For Sims it was his season high of 14 points. Dad and former LSU player Wayne Sims has to be happy with how his son has played, averaging 6.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 19.0 minutes a game. He has one start (at Texas A&M). Wayde Sims also was a multi-time state title holder at University High in Baton Rouge. Dad Wayne played for LSU from 1987-91 under Coach Dale Brown and an assistant coach named Johnny Jones. Wayne Sims is No. 33 on the school scoring list with 1,107 points, topped by a 13.3 scoring average his sophomore year (1988-89). He is also 26th on the school rebound list with 603 boards. The elder Sims is one of 22 players to have 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. The Sims join such family combos as Geert and Shane Hammink, Pete and Josh Maravich, Collis Jr. and Collis III and Garrett Temple, and, Rick and Paul Wolfert to name some. Wayne Sims and several players, including Shaquille O Neal, will be back for next Saturday Arkansas game for a reunion weekend celebrating the 1991 SEC Championship season. AARON EPPS Aaron Epps didn t have his best game of the year scoring wise, but it would have to be considered one of the best overall games of his LSU career as he had 15 points and 13 rebounds in a career high 34 minutes at Auburn (1/18). Epps started the first five games of the season, scoring 17 against Wofford and had 14 versus North Florida. He has started 14 games in all, primarily taking the spot that Craig Victor II. Epps has had six double figure scoring games and that was his second double double of his career. He is averaging 6.1 points, 4.6 rebounds a game and 16.7 minutes a contest. SENIOR BRIAN BRIDGEWATER GETTING MINUTES LAST TWO GAMES The senior, who has gotten minutes here and there this season, has been on the field more in the last two games just under his total minutes in 12 previous games. Against Texas Tech (1/28), Bridgewater was on the field for seven games before versus South Carolina (2/1), the Baton Rouge product played 12 points, making one field goal with four rebounds. He has a season high of four points against Vandy (12/29) He missed five total games with minor injuries. He has appeared in 14 total games. JUNIOR ELBERT ROBINSON III Elbert Robinson had one of best efforts of the season at Auburn (1/18) scoring eight points on 4-of-5 field goal attempts while playing eight minutes. He started for the first time this season against Florida (1/25) and in nine minutes made 3-of-4 field goal attempts to finish with six points. In the last three games, he is a combined 7-of-9 from the field, scoring 14 points. Robinson is 16-of-26 (61.5%) from the field for the year and is averaging 2.3 points and 1.4 rebounds. SO HOW YOUTHFUL IS THIS ROSTER? Youth has been mentioned a lot about this roster and some of that youth and inexperience has shown up in showing consistent defensive ability play-after-play. Last year, Kenpom.com had LSU s level experience as the 320th of the 351 Division I teams. Now LSU s experience is down 338th of the 351 teams Only Kentucky and Mississippi State are now the only SEC teams with younger experience rosters. RECORD YEAR FOR TIGERS IN NBA Although a couple of players like Jarell Martin, Jordan Mickey and Tim Quarterman have been visiting the D-League at times, when all are up to their clubs, LSU at the moment has a record nine players on NBA rosters this season: BRANDON BASS -- Los Angeles Clippers (12th year); MARCUS THORNTON -- Washington Wizards (8th year); GARRETT TEMPLE -- Sacramento Kings (7th year); JUSTIN HAMILTON -- Brooklyn Nets (3rd year); JORDAN MICKEY -- Boston Celtics (2nd year); JARELL MARTIN -- Memphis Grizzlies (2nd year); JOHNNY O BRYANT III Denver Nuggets (4th year); BEN SIMMONS -- Philadelphia 76ers (1st year); TIM QUARTERMAN -- Portland Trail Blazers (1st year).
