Won t be long now and we can take off and get started on the plans for this season. We had a great Road Captain s meeting and put lots of rides on the calendar. We ve included rides to the events of the other Chapter s in our section and are really trying to visit as many Chapters as we can. A big Thanks goes to Cal & Beth for their hospitality and organizing the meeting. Of course the first official event of this year was Wingless Weekend. We had 8 people representing Chapter W there and it was a blast! There were lots of fun games, great seminars and a great talent show. Not to brag but our skit was hilarious. Patti and Ken did a great job in planning the skit and putting together the props and I know we all enjoyed participating and being a part of it. Hopefully, you ll get to see it and laugh as hard as some of the people in the audience did. There were people that laughed so hard they cried. The state staff did a great job of putting the event together, following the theme of summer camp. There was a full schedule of things to do whether it was learning something new about GWRRA or just having fun. One of the seminars at Wingless Weekend was on the new training program that GWRRA is requiring for all officers, OCP, Officer Certification Program. This program is being implemented so that all Officers are trained and qualified and able to lead the Members and make the GWRRA experience the best it can be. They want continuity throughout GWRRA so that the membership can have the same experience and the officers can be certain they are doing things the GWRRA way. This program will give all Officers the tools and information to be successful in the area of responsibility they have. All current Directors and Assistant Directors at each level (Chapter, District and Region) must complete the OCP by August 31, 2010. Our training will take place the weekend of April 17 th in Lansing. OCP is open to any member of GWRRA who wishes to learn more about the Association. We re looking forward to learning all we can! Sincerely, Page 1

Even with only four couples, we represented Chapter W quite well. The Friday night skit had everyone laughing and they remembered it all weekend. Everywhere I went people would stop and say that skit was great. You will all get to see it at our April gathering when we show the video. Be prepared to laugh. On Saturday morning Ed & Vicki represented us well when they participated in the Couple of the Year program. Then (as you can see from the pictures) we all had fun with the games, especially Chapter A s Touchy Feely Game, and the ladies decorated our section of the camp totem pole. At dinner it was announced that Ken & Patti Kintner had won the Touchy Feely Game I guess we can touch each other faster than anyone in the state and Karen got it all on video! No matter what is going on with our state staff, here at Chapter W we are going strong. I m sure they will get it all worked out eventually. We here at Chapter W have plenty of rides and events that we are planning on attending. Let s hope the weather will be good for this riding season that will begin sooner than you think. I hope you all can join us and attend some or most of our ride schedule. We would like to start a new spot in our news letter where we highlight a different Chapter W couple or member each month. This is where we might find out everyone s little secrets? But only if they will share with us You won t want to miss this, so don t miss an issue of our newsletter. In an effort to save postage we are trying to print and handout as many newsletters as possible at the gathering, so you can look for it to show up on the website by the Saturday night before each gathering. West Branch Michigan Rally, July 29,30 & 31 please try to make it, the theme is Down On the Farm. Some of us are camping but whether you camp or stay in a cozy motel, please come down on the farm and join us for friendship and fun. Your ACDs Ken and Patti Kintner Page 2

Craig White RIDER ED GIMME 5 TOPIC: Trip Planning? Plan the Gear, too! So what have you been thinking about this winter? Have you been thinking about the gray skies, the rain, sleet or snow of the season? And how about the freezing temperatures? These are not very cheerful thoughts for those of us who are not winter sports enthusiasts. Some riders brighten their outlook at this time of year by planning for the coming riding season. A few of us are deciding which motorcycling events to attend this spring and summer. Will it be the Americade rally in upstate New York? Maybe this year you are planning to attend Wing Ding? How about a vacation trip to an area with great roads to ride or interesting geological attractions to see? Whatever your destination, planning the route to take is an important part of trip planning. However, don t overlook the need to plan the gear you will need to take with you on each of your trips. Having the proper gear for the ride is an essential element of a successful trip. So why not start with your most important safety gear? Inspect your helmet for wear and tear. How long has it been since you bought your helmet? Does the outer shell have chips or cracks? Has it sustained an impact while you were wearing it? Has it been repeatedly dropped from your motorcycle seat? Realize that helmets are only designed to survive one impact while being worn. Also look at the chin strap. Is it frayed from many years of wear? These signs of damage indicate that it may be time to replace your helmet. Experts advise changing your helmet every 3 to 5 years for maximum protection. Time, wear and ultraviolet rays will cause your helmet s materials to degrade resulting in reduced protection. (www.snellfoundation.org.) Are you planning a southern tour this summer? Have you thought to check the weather for the area you plan to visit? Be sure you know what the average high and low temperatures are for the month of your visit. If you expect to encounter hot weather, this may be the time for you to start shopping for a mesh jacket if you don t already own one. These jackets give you the best abrasion protection (if needed) along with maximum ventilation. Good ventilation reduces your discomfort in hot weather and can help prevent heat exhaustion. Even though they have long sleeves, when you wear a mesh jacket the air flows around you almost as if you are wearing nothing. And the synthetic materials provide excellent abrasion resistance. With elbow, shoulder and back pads included, you get great protection for your corners and your back in case you go down. Wise riders always wear long pants while riding. Most riders wear denim jeans. This is probably because they are already part of everyone s wardrobe to begin with, and they are comfortable when you are not on the bike. They do provide some resistance to abrasion, but not anywhere near the protection of leather or the synthetic gear. Did you know there are also riding pants made from breathable mesh materials, too? They bring all the benefits of being designed specifically for motorcycling with extra protection at the knees, hips, and legs in case of a spill at speed. The mesh material can also help keep you from getting uncomfortably hot. And there are gloves manufactured with the same mesh materials to protect your hands as well. They provide you with a good grip on the controls while keeping your hands fully covered for maximum protection. They are durable and worth checking out for your comfort and protection. Can you rely on your current rain gear? Does your rain gear have leaky seams or rips? Do you need to put a new jacket or rain pants on the shopping list? Having good, comfortable gear that fits you properly for all riding conditions will allow you to fix your attention on the ride and not on your physical discomforts. This will also help ensure that you will have a great trip. And knowing that you and your co-rider have the protection you may need will give you peace of mind every time you saddle up. Now, which route do we want to take? Ride Smart & Be Safe! Bruce & Melissa Thayer Former MI Asst. District Rider Educators brucethayer1@comcast.net Craig White What s wrong with this picture? Page 3
