I know some of our members have taken trips this past month and hope you had a good time on your bikes. Jan and I found time to take a week long trip with Jerry and Marilyn to Indiana and up into Michigan and back. We had a great time and enjoyed the scenery. July is one of our hottest month's so hopefully we will be able to find a Saturday cool enough to work in a group ride. Wing Ding will be in Fort Wayne in July 4th to the 7th. Hope everyone that attends will have a safe ride and a good time. We will be collecting for the Arkansas Bikers for Children at the Tractor Supply Store in Conway July 14th from 8am to 12pm. Please come and support this cause. Jan and I are looking for July to be slower for us so we can be with the Chapter for our dinner rides and other things that we do together. Celebrate your freedom and thank a veteran for their service on July 4th and everyday. " Happy Birthday America". Have a great July. Bud & Jan. Page 2 Chapter L s Toad Tales Conway, AR Hello Friends: Man can you believe that it s July already? This has been one crazy time for Sam & me. Back in June I fell and broke my left ankle and I have a hair line crack on the right foot so, I have been wheeling around the house. Going for surgery next week, but no problem, Sam has been out and about representing our State and Chapter with Twinkles and Telly by his side. This last month Sam made a trip to Chapter W and then back the same day to our gathering at Smitty s. You know a broken foot won t keep your Chapter/District couple down. We are looking for some cooler weather so we can do a bit more riding this month, and visiting more chapters. Just like I said before what a crazy and wild ride so far. Have fun this summer, but remember to stay cool. Sam & Belinda Lister Chapter/District Couple of the year 2012

Once again Belinda was awarded the Dumb Duck, but due to an accident she couldn t be at the gathering to receive such a high honor so, her loving husband stepped in to except the honors in her absents. The Littells, Wirges, Papa Smurf, Miss Gladys, and the Humphrey's pose for a picture session during our gathering. Members from Chapter L out of Alabama was visiting Chapter C, Sam and Belinda had to get a picture with the other chapter L members.

Page 4 Chapter L s Toad Tales Conway, AR. We had a great ride on the 23rd; for those of you who were not able to make it, we really wished you could have. The weather was not too hot, and the route was very nice and pretty. There were only 4 trikes that made the ride; Fred, Carolen, and Sam met up with Jerry at El Paso. From there we rode to Beebe then south on 31 toward Lonoke, 38 to Des Arc, 11 to Stuttgart, 165 to England, and 161 to Scott, where we had a great lunch at Cothan's. The weather has really heated; so those of you who are going to Wing Ding, please remember to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks. Carolen and I are headed to Greers Ferry Lake for a hot week of camping; spending time with family and hopefully catch some fish. Have a happy and safe 4th of July! Ride Safe Fred

Page 7 Chapter L s Toad Tales Conway, AR. Riders Education With Safety Sam!!! Highways near big cities seem to be in a perpetual state construction. You change lanes to get out from behind a truck that was blocking our view, and that also got you away from a ladder that wasn t secured very well. But the left lane is narrow, with hefty concrete divider just inches away, and very uneven paving that bounces the bike around. To make matters worse, more than a few drivers in the right lane are wandering over the white line partially into your lane, and you notice the lane gets even narrower ahead. You try to stay in the left side of the lane to avoid getting sideswiped by one of the wondering drivers, but when the concert divider closes in you ease over toward the center of the lane. Suddenly, the bike seems to have a mind of its own. The front wheel darts left and then right. You fight the wobbles, barely managing to keep the bike balanced, and finally squeeze over more toward the right. You slow down to get farther away from the other vehicles. It s a scary situation. Your were smart to get out from behind a vision-blocking truck, and to separate yourself from other vehicles and hazards but apparently you failed to noticed the rutted edge trap in the center of your lane, created when the lanes were squeezed in for construction. Two-wheeled vehicles are especially susceptible to grooves or ruts, because they can snag the front tire and make it difficult to steer. When you can t steer accurately, it s hard to keep the bike balanced. Your tactic of moving to the right of center and dropping back was a good move. In addition to watching the busy traffic, you should have maintained your awareness of surface hazards, including the uneven groove in the center of the left lane. When you must cross a pavement groove or raised edge, swerve across it aggressively, don t try to ease across. This is something that every one of us has experienced especially with all the construction on the local highways and in other construction zones around the state. We must be aware of our surroundings when traveling the interstates. Ride Safe ride often Safety Sam

Page 9 Chapter L s Toad Tales Conway, AR. By the Book By: Jack Wagner Region H Trainer Remember When You Were New? One thing we all have in common, besides our love for Gold Wings (and ice cream), is that we were all new members at one time. Remember when you first joined GWRRA? Remember your first chapter gathering? I was attending a recent chapter gathering and began talking about Wing Ding and a new member raised their hand and asked What's a Wing Ding?. I was thankful they asked the question rather than just wondering what I was talking about. Sometimes we forget what it was like to be new. So let's help out our new members and give them a proper orientation. If your chapter has several newer members, consider holding a member orientation day using the Member Orientation seminars from the Leadership Training Program. Its a great way to socialize and get to know these new folks and since HOT weather is coming, it is a great way to spend an afternoon especially if some 'cool treats' are part of the plan. At the very least, download the Member Orientation Guide from the Membership Enhancement section (http://mep.gwrra.org/mec/newmembersguide(rev2011).pdf), Consider personalizing it by adding a page listing all of your Chapter, District and even Region officers and their contact information as well as appropriate websites. Have a copy available to give to new members. Its full of all kinds of information from a bit of GWRRA history to how we're organized and some definitions and acronyms (which we tend to use too much). Oh, this isn't just for new members either. I was conducting one of the Member Orientation seminars at last year's Wing Ding, and sitting in the front row were some Life Members. I asked why they were attending this particular seminar and they said it was the only one needed to complete their Leadership Training and obtain the hanger bar. However, when the seminar was over, each of them came up and told me they learned something they weren't aware of even with over 20 years of membership! Maybe the old dogs can be taught. This is just one more of the resources available to aid officers in fulfilling the obligations set forth in the Officer Handbook and Memorandum of Understanding. Jack Wagner Region H Trainer

Page 10 Chapter L s Toad Tales Conway, AR. Johnny and Mildred Glasscock July 2012 We want to start by saying thank you. Thank you all for being so supportive of Arkansas. Thank you for attending the District Convention, for participating in your chapter gatherings, rides and social events, for visiting your neighbor chapters and the many other things you do. The district needs you, the members, to have FUN! We, your District Team are here for you. We want to hear what you want, like, or dislike. It s hard to believe that July is already here. The weather will be getting HOTTER very soon so ride safe, take plenty of breaks and get something cool to drink. Wing Ding is just around the corner; we hope Arkansas has a great showing. Oklahoma is cleaning up everywhere they go as being the largest district at events. They need some competition- come on Arkansas!! Region H is in charge of the bike show again this year and we still need volunteers. Go to http://www.region-h.org/ and sign up for something, you do not have to be a bike show judge. We need people to add the scores, someone to help set up the floor for staging and so much more. We hope that not only will everyone volunteer to help some time during the day, but also put your motorcycle in the bike show. It s a lot of fun; don t do it expecting to win, do it expecting to have fun. You can go to the following web site and see the schedule for Wing Ding and see when all the fun is happening and schedule your time around the events you want to participate in. http://www.wing-ding.org/ PARTICIPATION = FUN!!! There are several events planned for the rest of the year so be sure to check out the District Calendar for updated events and plan to attend. Roy Dellinger has started a traveling plaque with the March of Dime plaque. The way this works is a chapter goes to visit the chapter where the plaque is and the chapter that travels the furthest takes it back to their chapter. It stays at that chapter until someone comes to get it. The plaque is in Blytheville with Chapter W right now and it has been there for 3-4 months. Where will it go???? RIDE OFTEN AND RIDE SAFE!!!! Page 11 Chapter L s Toad Tales Conway AR. Well, I regret to share that Rue and I will be selling our bike due to her physical health, she has been having problems with a foot and since had 3 surgeries thus far on it, and just doesn't look like it will ever allow her to have full use of it again. This has kept her from being about to ride the bike for well over a year and therefore i have not been riding either. It only seems fitting that we sell out and move to something that we both can enjoy together again. The bike has served us well and brought us many adventures as well as so many new and special friendships thru GWRRA, we love Chapter "L" and don't plan to fall out of contact with our friends there. But I would like to post if you have room our bike for sell. Will be glad to talk or email with anyone interested. Asking $12,000 for 2002 Yellow GL1800 /with Cycle mate trailer (white) or $11,500 for bike alone. will attach photos. Contact Allen Holloway At 501-354-1122 or email at allenholloway@hotmail.com

We will have served three years as your directors. Counting the time we served as Assistant Region Directors and Region LTP we will have been on the region team approximately nine Advertisement
