Rider's Education; This month we are going to review some basic fundamentals of Team Riding or Group Riding, whichever one you are used to calling it. As we start our riding season it s always good to go over some of the basics. The GWRRA Team Riding Manual covers this topic very well. will go over some key points. 1. Show up for the ride with a FULL fuel tank. Stops will be planned along the way but don t delay the group by having to stop unnecessarily. 2. Do a TCLC inspection of your motorcycle before leaving for the ride. 3. Make sure you have rain gear, first aid kit, tool kit, water, and extra layers that can be donned or doffed depending on the weather. 4. Review hand signals. Not everyone will have a CB so some basics for single file, slow down, hazard in the road, are a few of the often used signals. 5. Know your route and maybe even look at a map prior to the ride. Pays off if someone gets separated. 6. Show up N TME. The riding manual states that group size of 5 to 7 bikes is optimal. Groups that are larger should break into 2 groups. This keeps control tighter and has less effect on traffic flow of other vehicles around you. Management of the team is based upon proper spacing. A 2 second rule for the bike directly in front of you is recommended. A bike offset to one side of you should have a 1 second spacing. This spacing helps to avoid a yo-yoing effect that stretches the group out unevenly and can allow spaces that other traffic can mix in and break the group up. Someone once asked how do know m 2 seconds behind? The easiest method is to look for a stationary object like a telephone pole and as the bike in front of you is lined up with that pole count in your head one thousand one, one thousand two, and on the second count you should be lined up with that pole. f not then adjust your speed to either catch up or fall back. Listening to the leader or drag person is critical to keeping the group intact and safe. Keeping the staggered formation gives you an escape route all around you should evasive action be required. All of these items should be discussed in a group meeting held just prior to kick stands up and embarking on the journey. f everyone pays attention and follows some basic rules the ride can be safe and enjoyable. Next month we will discuss some additional safety guidelines for group riding that deal with certain traffic situations. Remember we ride for FUN, SAFETY, and KNWLEDGE.
