By Lisa Dillman 4:00 PM PDT, April 20, 2013 CALGARY, Canada -- For the Ducks, their current offensive drought has permeated the lineup at precisely the wrong time. With four games remaining on the schedule starting Sunday night against the Oilers at Edmonton the Ducks have seven days remaining in the regular season to engineer a course correction. They've scored five goals in their last four games, and there are some other numbers to ponder, in a larger sense. For example: Bobby Ryan's offensive creativity has gone missing. The forward has one goal in the last 15 games. His linemate, Corey Perry went four games without scoring and had only one goal in the last seven games before scoring with 3:41 remaining in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Flames. Additionally, Andrew Cogliano has not scored in six games, Saku Koivu's last goal was March 16 at St. Louis, a goal-less stretch of 17 games, and Daniel Winnik, who had five goals in the first four games of the season, has scored once in the next 40 games. "There's still a lot to play for and if you think you can just turn it on we've all seen it long enough, and been around the game long enough that it doesn't just happen," defenseman Sheldon Souray said in the dressing room after Friday's game. "You just don't flick a switch and you're the team you were in February. "We have to get in the mind-set that our playoffs have started and get our game sharpened up and dialed in because the way we're playing right now, we're not going to be playing long." The sense of urgency did surface, eventually, against the Flames. "We've seen it when we're down 2-0," Souray said. "It's too late. If we play like we did in the last 10 minutes well, we'll play with a lead. That's the way we play and most nights we play with a lead and it's a completely different game. "That's what we were doing when we were having success, playing like that for 60 minutes. Everybody just continuing to go, to keep pressure on and to play hard. We've just gotten away from that. It's not just one guy, it's right down the lineup." Fowler returns Defenseman Cam Fowler, who missed two games with an upper-body injury, was back in action against the Flames and played nearly 22 minutes. It was his most ice time since he logged 22:25 at San Jose on March 27. "I felt OK," he said. Orange County Register: LOADED: 04.21.2013 By ERIC STEPHENS 2013-04-20 20:22:00 EDMONTON, Alberta The belief in his eventual development into a topline franchise defenseman is why the Ducks pushed to lock up Cam Fowler just before the NHL locked out the players in September. Fowler's puck-moving skills were worth a $20 million investment in their eyes. He'll become a $4 million player for the Ducks beginning next season and is still seen as a cornerstone for their future. But it has been a bumpy road to Year 3 after falling to the delirious Ducks in the 2010 draft. The promise remains but the progress has been incremental. And when there are no goals, eight assists and a number of missed games in an already-shortened lockout season, those signs of progress are harder to find. "I feel like I have made a lot of steps in the right direction, and I feel like I'm playing well for the team," Fowler said. "On the other hand, sometimes the results aren't there or the numbers or whatever it may be. "I know that I have the confidence of the coaching staff behind me and my teammates. And that's all that matters to me." It has been a strange season for the 21-year-old rearguard. The Ducks started their redemption season nicely with a 7-3 win at Vancouver but Fowler wasn't part of it because of flu symptoms. A hit by the Kings' Jarret Stoll on Feb. 2 knocked him out of the next eight games with what the club officially listed as an upper-body injury and has yet to confirm if it was a concussion. Fowler returned but the offense displayed over his first two seasons hasn't. Fowler again was out of the lineup for two games because of an upperbody muscle injury but returned Friday night in Calgary and got an assist on Corey Perry's goal in the Ducks' 3-1 loss to the Flames. Looking at his year, Fowler acknowledged that "it's been difficult" from Day One. "You wait so long, you're ready to play and the first game of the year, you get the flu," he said. "You come back, you're starting to feel like you got the jump and you get injured. So it's kind of an up and down, up and down. "You feel like you're almost there. Things are starting to go well and you kind of have it taken away from you again." Fowler's up-and-down characterization are the same words that Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau used in his assessment of him. "We've seen him play great games," Boudreau said. "We've seen a young guy lose his confidence a little bit and then gain it. Do some great things and make some mistakes. Overall, it's been an up-and-down year for him. Confidence is a big part of Fowler's game and it flows freely when he's skating around forechecking opponents out of his own end and knows where he wants to deliver the puck right to a teammate or an area where one can get to it. It is the mistakes made often on the defensive end that have him playing tentatively and thinking about those errors long after the game is over. Fowler is no longer a double-digit minus player but he's still a minus-7. Maintaining his young defenseman's confidence level is something Boudreau and assistant Bob Woods continually work at. "It's a really fine line," Boudreau said. "I've used the difference between a rut and a groove. It's only a foot and a half from a pat on the back to a kick in the (rear). And that's what you just got to do. "You got to define with Cam which one does he need at that time. I think Bob's done a really good job with it. We just have to make sure it's the pat on the back stuff now that's going to get him playing good."

Horton, who had grabbed Iginla s jersey with his left hand, might have suffered the injury when they fell. After the Bruins 3-2 loss, coach Claude Julien said he didn t have any information on Horton s status. The fight started at 17:56 after Horton checked Iginla in front of the Pittsburgh bench. Iginla appeared to jab Horton in the back to initiate the fight. Horton turned, shed his mitts, and removed his helmet. Iginla, who wears a visor, also took off his helmet. Horton had started the game alongside Daniel Paille and David Krejci. Horton skated eight shifts for 5:18 of ice time. After Horton s departure, Rich Peverley took some shifts on Krejci s right wing. Horton, who has 13 goals and nine assists, hasn t missed a game this season. If Horton is unavailable for Sunday s game against Florida, Milan Lucic could return to the lineup. On Saturday, Lucic was a healthy scratch for only the second time as an NHLer. Lucic s other healthy scratch took place during his rookie season in 2007-08. The move was expected. During Thursday s practice at Ristuccia Arena, Lucic skated on a spare line with Kaspars Daugavins and Jay Pandolfo. All three were among the scratches against Pittsburgh. Soderberg debuts One reason why Lucic was benched was the Bruins desire to give Carl Soderberg some action. The Swedish forward, who arrived in Boston on Tuesday, made his NHL debut against the Penguins. Soderberg, wearing No. 34, was the left wing on the third line with Chris Kelly and Jaromir Jagr. Soderberg saw 16:10 of action, including 1:59 on the power play, where he served as the right-side goal-line man. Soderberg s only appearance on the scoresheet was a first-period hooking penalty. It s high speed, of course, Soderberg said of NHL. It s better play than Sweden. It s been tough on me. I haven t played in a long time. Hopefully it will get better and better. Soderberg will have five regular-season games in which to adjust to the NHL s smaller rinks, physical play, and speed. Soderberg is eligible for the playoffs. I thought he handled himself pretty well for his first game, said Julien. The one thing is that he s a smart player. He s going to figure it out pretty quickly. McQuaid roughed up Adam McQuaid appeared to hurt his left knee during a second-period collision with Matt Cooke. On the play, Cooke threw a hip check on McQuaid, causing the defenseman s left leg to buckle. McQuaid crawled to the bench, then limped to the dressing room with help from his teammates. Zdeno Chara confronted Cooke along the boards after the play. Chara was called for roughing. It s pretty obvious that it s a cheap shot from Cooke, Julien said. Typical same guy. He s got to go low and get a guy right around the knee area, then turns his back. McQuaid returned to the bench several minutes later and completed the game. Final flurry Saturday marked the first of three rescheduled games, and started a span of six games in nine days. On Thursday, the Bruins will host Tampa Bay. The teams were originally scheduled to play on Feb. 9, but the game was postponed because of the blizzard. The Bruins will close out the regular season at the Garden next Sunday against Ottawa, which had been scheduled for Patriots Day, but postponed because of the bombings. We re going to have to maneuver through that very carefully, Julien said. It s a balance of hopefully being able to win games and, at the same time, rest some guys. The Bruins annual Shirts Off Their Backs event will take place Sunday after the Panthers game. However, according to the Bruins, at the request of season ticket-holders, the autographed jerseys will instead be given to first responders. The Bruins rescheduled their Fan Appreciation Day for next Sunday against the Senators, during which they will give away their team awards. During warm-ups, Bruins players wore baseball caps instead of helmets, with logos representing the Boston, Watertown, and Massachusetts State police departments. Dozens of signs in the stands reflected not only gratitude Thank you police placards were prominent but steely resolve as the Boston Strong motto continued to take hold. Bruins forward Brad Marchand said that although the atmosphere was similar to Wednesday s game, it was a little bit different, too. We felt the same way as last game, said Marchand, who had Boston s first goal in the Bruins 3-2 loss to the Penguins. With the ceremony and all the police and firemen in the building, it was a special time again. It was a little more of a celebration with every-one here tonight. It was more of an opportunity for us to thank them and to give our respects for the amazing job they did with taking [the suspect] into custody and cleaning up the streets. It just seems like there was a whole different aura around the building tonight. Everyone was a little more safe and excited that it s over. Marchand said the team has done a very good job harnessing its emotions during a very difficult week, trying to turn a negative into a positive as much as it was able. That s what we ve tried to do, said Marchand. We want to try to give the city something to believe in and something to look forward to with watching our games and everything. But it would ve been a little nicer if we got a couple of wins. I think for the most part, the city was able to take their minds off everything for a couple of hours and watch our games. Marchand said despite all the tension in the city and the terrible circumstances surrounding the bombings, it hasn t been hard to focus. It s something that is very easy to get up for, he said. We were all very excited for the opportunity to do that. It s definitely not something that is draining or anything like that at all. The Bruins got off to a terrific start against the Penguins, channeling the emotion into action, but they couldn t generate enough offense. We definitely built a lot of momentum off that, said Marchand. We came out very hard and had a great start. We carried that through pretty much the whole game. Again, we didn t get the result. For the Penguins, who graciously agreed to wear Boston Strong shirts and hats before the game, it was a moving day to be in the building. The pregame ceremony included photos of the marathon aftermath and the first responders stepping up to help. I think that anyone who is human finds some emotion in that, said former Boston College defenseman Brooks Orpik. I think that everyone was proud to wear them, excited to wear them. I live here in the summer, so I will probably live here when I am done playing. It was just a good atmosphere to be around. Veteran Jarome Iginla, who was met with boos by the crowd because of his decision to be traded to Pittsburgh rather than Boston, said he had a lot of sympathy for the city and what has transpired over the last week. It s been a very sad and intense week and [Friday] was hard, said Iginla, referring to the area-wide lockdown that resulted in the game being postponed from Friday night to Saturday afternoon. We knew we weren t going to play and didn t know when we were for sure going to play, but it was nice to be able to play today and have the fans here and their reactions. As players, you want to give a little bit of a timeout and come and play hard for the fans. Once you get playing, you play as hard as you can, both sides. 671272 Boston Bruins Hockey returns to Boston, Penguins top Bruins 3-2 HOWARD ULMAN BOSTON (AP) Another emotional video tribute. Another stirring performance of the national anthem by a packed arena. Another hockey game in Boston. The sport returned to the city Saturday, a day after a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was captured, and the fans welcomed their Bruins back with cheers and greeted the Pittsburgh Penguins with jeers. The Penguins clinched home-ice advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 3-2 win in the Bruins second game since the bombings. It had been postponed from Friday night because of the manhunt. The mood was more somber Wednesday night in another 3-2 loss at home in a shootout to the Buffalo Sabres. It was a little more of a celebration with everyone here, more of an opportunity for us to thank (police) and give our respects for the amazing job they did, Boston s Brad Marchand said. It just seems like there s a whole different aura around the building.... Everyone was a little more safe and excited that it s over. One suspect was shot to death early Friday and the other was captured Friday night hiding under a tarp in a boat in a backyard in nearby Watertown. A pregame slideshow on the video board above center ice showed pictures of smiling policemen after the second suspect was taken into custody. Also shown were individual photos of Lu Lingzi, Krystle Campbell and Martin Richard, who were killed in Monday s bombings, and Sean Collier, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer shot to death by the suspects. Any human being would find some type of emotion in that pregame video and the memory when they re showing the victims, Pittsburgh s Brooks Orpik said. During the game, a fan held up an MIT pennant. Before Wednesday s game, a video was shown of scenes after the bombings near the finish line. And, like Wednesday, veteran Bruins vocalist Rene Rancourt started the national anthem then gestured for the fans to join him and they did, loudly and emotionally. We felt the same way as last game with the ceremony and, again, with all the police and fireman and everything in the building, Marchand said. It was a special time again, and we definitely built a lot of momentum off of that. The postponement was the second of the week for the Bruins. Their game against the Ottawa Senators last Monday night, scheduled to start about four hours after the bombings, was rescheduled for April 28. Before the game, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma wore a black T-shirt with the words BOSTON STRONG over his shirt and tie. Penguins players also wore them before the game. Everyone was proud to wear them, Orpik said. During warmups, Bruins players wore baseball caps of the state police and Boston and Watertown police departments. The black cap for Watertown, where the suspect was taken into custody, had the Bruins Spiked B logo on the front and the word STRONG on the back. The Penguins took a nine-point lead in the Eastern Conference over Montreal, which could get only eight more points in its remaining four games. The Bruins remained in fourth place with 57 points, 11 behind the Penguins, with five games to go. These types of races usually come down to the last game, last two games, Bylsma said, and to be able to clinch the division and now clinch the conference this early says a lot for our team and how we've played through this shortened season with different types of injuries. Pittsburgh won its sixth straight game despite the continued absence of some top offensive players. NHL scoring leader Sidney Crosby missed his eighth game with a broken jaw, James Neal sat out his fifth because of a concussion and last season s NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin was sidelined for his third with a shoulder injury. With the score 1-1 on goals by Marchand in the first period and Pittsburgh s Jussi Jokinen in the second, the Penguins got two power-play goals in 4 minutes. The jeers grew louder after he scored on a 50-foot shot from the center of the blue line as Chris Kunitz screened goalie Tuukka Rask. I guess I'd be prepared for that. I can understand that the fans wouldn t be too happy that he decided to go to Pittsburgh instead of Boston, Iginla said. Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli had been upset when his deal for Iginla fell through. The player had a no-trade clause and waived it to go to Pittsburgh instead of Boston. But on Saturday afternoon, Rask accepted the blame for giving up two power-play goals in the third period of the Bruins 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh at TD Garden. The Bruins are 0-3-1 in their last four games. It s my bad, Rask said. Second one and third one. Both. No question about that. Not too often I cost the game. Today I did. It s just how it is sometimes. The Bruins were charged up to win the game for themselves, their fans, and their city. Before the game, the Bruins honored law enforcement with a simple but powerful gesture. The helmets their employer considers mandatory for warm-ups remained in the dressing room. The Bruins wore Massachusetts State Police, Boston Police, and Watertown Police hats to recognize law enforcement s work since the Boston Marathon attacks. The Bruins rode that emotion into a strong first period in which they grabbed a 1-0 lead. But the two power-play goals, which both slipped through Rask s pads, were too much for the Bruins to overcome, as the Penguins secured home ice throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs. At 3:25 of the third period, after Rask had covered the puck, Brad Marchand lost his cool. According to Marchand, Jussi Jokinen grabbed him by the helmet. Earlier in the game, Marchand believed Jokinen had been too quick to jab, poke, and slash with his stick. So this time Marchand dropped his mitts and tried to engage Jokinen in a fight. Jokinen kept his gloves on. Marchand was sent to the box for roughing. When you get caught retaliating and only one guy gets caught, it s obviously not a good penalty, said coach Claude Julien. On the power play, Jarome Iginla fired a long-distance slap shot. Chris Kunitz was parked in front of Rask, which kept the goalie from getting an optimal look on the puck. But the puck slipped through five-hole, a no-no from Julien s view. Rask and the penalty kill came up short later in the third. Matt Bartkowski was whistled for high-sticking Kunitz at 8:17. Patrice Bergeron won the following faceoff and threw the puck into the corner. But the Penguins overwhelmed the Bruins against the wall and emerged with the puck. Kris Letang walked the puck to the top of the left circle and snapped the puck past Rask at 8:29 to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead. You re not going to point the finger, but your goaltender s got to make some saves, too, at the right time, Julien said. He knows he s got to have those. I m not just pointing at him. But he s got to be better. Both Rask and the penalty kill have been areas of strength. Entering the game, the Bruins had the league s No. 1 PK (88.1 percent), but the Bruins haven t been as crisp in recent shorthanded situations. In their last three games (two regulation losses and a shootout setback), the Bruins have allowed six power-play goals on 15 opportunities. Everything has to fall into place for your penalty kill to be good, Julien said. We needed some timely saves. We also can t give them those opportunities to shoot. That other goal from Letang, he just walked from the wall and took a wrist shot from the top of the circles. The PK blemishes overshadowed stretches in which the Bruins hummed at playoff pace. In the first, during which Marchand gave his club a lead with a power-play goal, the Bruins held a 13-5 shot advantage. In the second, the Bruins had a goal waved off that would have given them a 2-1 lead. Tomas Vokoun (38 saves) made an initial stop on Marchand. But Marchand jammed the puck loose from between Vokoun s skates. Patrice Bergeron pushed the puck over the line at 12:51, but referees Tom Kowal and Brad Meier ruled that the whistle had blown after Vokoun s first stop. We built on the last game and had another very strong game, Marchand said. Lot of opportunities. But again, we need results. But when the playoffs start in less than two weeks, the end result will be the only thing that matters. Boston Herald LOADED: 04.21.2013 For over a month now, the Bruins overall product has resembled one giant game of Whack-A-Mole. As soon as one issue is taken care of, another one pops up. Last week, the B s had the uncharacteristic problem of playing too much in their own zone and giving up too many shots. But the last few games, they re back facing a more common problem an inability to cash in on scoring opportunities. Playing an injury-riddled but still talented Pittsburgh Penguins team yesterday at the Garden, the B s dominated the first two periods but had only a tie score to show for it. Then in the third period, the Penguins scored two power-play goals one by Jarome Iginla and the other from Kris Letang before clamping down defensively. Tyler Seguin scored a meaningless goal with 2.6 seconds left, but Pittsburgh skated off with a 3-2 victory and the top seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs. The B s threw 40 shots on Tomas Vokoun, but only Brad Marchand could beat the Penguins goalie, for a first period power-play goal, when it mattered. I thought we built on the last game and we had another very strong game. A lot of opportunities, Marchand said. But again, we need results and we can t continue to lose games like this. For the third straight game, the B s allowed two power-play goals, a rarity for a team that has had the best penalty kill in the NHL for most of the season. But yesterday at least, goalie Tuukka Rask took responsibility for those goals and the defeat. Though Chris Kunitz got a good screen on him on the Iginla goal, Rask said he should not be beaten through the 5- hole. Same goes for the shortside goal that Letang scored. Not too often I cost a game. Today I did. That s just how it is sometimes, Rask said. It s always tough for a goalie when you don t break a sweat and you lose, so that kind of sucks. The B s also shot themselves in the foot. Coach Claude Julien was happy to see a physical, edgy element back in their game That s what we we re asking our team to start doing, he said but Iginla s go-ahead goal was scored on the power play when Marchand picked the wrong time to avenge a chippy game from Jussi Jokinen, who had tied the game early in the second. Marchand conceded he lost his cool in that instance, but added, He d been all over guys, cross-checking and stickwork. I just kind of took exception to it. The only line that seems to have real chemistry is the Marchand-Patrice Bergeron-Seguin unit. Jaromir Jagr has yet to find a permanent home and Carl Soderberg, who made his debut on a line with Jagr and Chris Kelly, is also a new name being thrown into the mix. The Bruins may also have to deal with the loss of Nathan Horton, who left the game after a first-period fight with Iginla in which he appeared to be bothered by hand/wrist injury. Julien had no update on Horton s status after the game. The struggling Milan Lucic, a healthy scratch yesterday, could go back in today against Florida, though Julien wasn t ready to commit to the move after the loss. There are five games left in the regular season to find the right combinations, so the clock is ticking. I think I need to re-evaluate our whole team here, Julien said. Yet with time still left, the B s, who have lost four straight (0-3-1), are trying to keep their thoughts as positive as possible. I think we re back to playing with a bit of an edge, so that s a positive. If we keep building play in that way, things will start going a little bit better for us, Shawn Thornton said.
