Welcome to fall! Wait, not just yet, but the summer is flying by that quickly. This summer has been full of Yacht Club happenings and it is great to see the members getting out and enjoying the weather and each other. Commodore WIndseekers has seen very good turnout for the year. Weather has been nice, but the wind just does not want to cooperate quite often. As true sailors, we make the best of what we get. Much thanks goes out to Don Kimball and his team for doing the best with what the conditions are presenting. With that being said, I want to remind everyone that the race committee is a volunteer group. For anyone who has not gone out and assisted the RC team, it is a great look into what it takes to make this happen. We have 30 to 40 boats out there racing all because these individuals volunteer to make it possible. Next time you check in, say thanks. And if you or one of your crewmembers wants to see "behind the curtain" and participate in the Race Committee, just give Don a Jingle! Also on the racing front is the number of protests we have had this year. To date, this year has doubled the number of protests seen in the previous 4 years. There is no reason for things to ever get to this point. I will remind you that the penalty when addressed on the course is a 360 turn and when it goes to an actual protest, someone is looking at the possibility of being scored DSQ. It's an easy math problem and I will even give you the answer - do the 360 and avoid the protest. One last shameless plug for our Vashon Challenge race coming up on August 20 th ; if you like sailing by yourself, or with just one other person, is this the race for you! A wonderful jaunt around the Isle of Vashon in single or double handed classes. Let's see if we can get some interest up there and get a good sized crowd out there to enjoy the scenery. Enough about that - how about those cruises! I have been absent from the last couple, so I cannot speak first hand, but the information I am getting back is that they have been great. Zombies attacked Des Moines, 4th of July was well attended, and we are looking forward now to the upcoming cruises this month in Longbranch and the Labor Day cruise going to "TBD". I believe I will be driving down to see what the St. Johns have planned because our boat will be high and dry that week. If you are not going by boat - follow us! I'll throw in another plug for the upcoming cruise October 21 through 23. (Continued from page 2) three wine tastings up in Woodinville that weekend for our Yacht Club members. We are booking rooms at the Totem Lake Hotel for one or two nights, and using that as our "dock space". If interested, let me know so I can confirm numbers to the wineries which include Airfield, Amavi, and Fedelitas. Come on along and let s have some more fun! Now for some more happenings - The dingy dock project is ready to roll, just in time to also release lasers and optis to those interested in purchasing. I believe we have worked out access to the dock, and there will be a few tune up items completed in the next week. So, if you have a small boat you want to keep there to use, let me know. If you WANT one to keep there, let me know. This is a bit of an experiment, so let's try to see how successful we can make it. Crew Finder - CYCT is in the middle of developing a way for Skippers to contact crew, and crew to get in touch with boat owners. There will be more news on this in the upcoming two weeks, so keep your eyes out on Facebook and E-mail. Yacht Club Business - you will be seeing and hearing about a few Bylaw revisions / additions that I have been discussing with the board over the last two months. We have found that there are a few holes in the bylaws that would be nice to fill, as well as a few other suggestions that will help avoid confusion in the future. Keep an eye out on the Mainsheet in September for information, as well as an e-mail notification. On top of that, we will also be beginning searches to fill open board positions for 2017. PLEASE consider becoming more involved with the club and helping out. I can tell you from experience, it is a pleasure to work with your friends on this project we call CYCT, and everyone brings something to the table. New views are always good, fresh blood to help shape the future is a must. If you are thinking about it, contact one of the Board Members and find out what the position requires. Well, that is all of the news that is fit to print. As for Aubre and I, summer has been busy with work, racing, home, relatives visiting, and all of the other things that take up our time. We had a great Whidbey Island Race Week finishing 4th in our class - Congratulations to Grace E and the White Family for their 3rd place and to the Pinkham Brigade on Jeopardy. Also, to Christine Nelson and her crew on Slick who won their class and looked to be pretty dominate. Let's see if we cannot get more club boats up there next year to support the race. Vice Commodore Summer Seems like we spend three quarters of the year waiting for these 12 weeks. Twelve weeks to squeeze out every possible moment on our boats. That is, in between other summer activities that don t include a boat (those still exist, right?) Because of those summer demands, the board has giving me permission to kind of slack on my other CYCT job - Mainsheet editor. It might be out of sympathy or because they didn t want to have spend time inside writing articles either. Let s face it - our summer time is precious. We ve passed the 275 mark for trips on the Naughty boat, and when we re not away from the dock, you might still find us on the boat, polishing, varnishing of - perish the thought - relaxing. We ve had a number of sleep overs this summer, usually after enjoying dock neighbors like the Ballentines and the Tenneys. The log shows over 100 nights on board since buying our boat just a few years ago. Then of course there is Windseeker racing. Don and crew have done a great job this season. We missed over a month while Naughty waited for a new engine. It s hard to believe there are only three more races left. We ve enjoyed them all and have been sticking to our rule of adding crew until they start to fall off. Last race we had 11 on board. Our regular crew Michael, Kurt and Patti. Then we had one of our TWSA students and her daughter. Add a Sea Scout, his mom and a friend. Round that off with an overflow TWSA student from another boat. We are quickly approaching that magical 100th guest on Naughty by Nature. So enjoy your summer. Actually, enjoy your boat year round. Unlike my sister s sailing grounds in Michigan, we have 12 months of the year and deep water. Make the most of it. And thanks to the board for the rest. I need the rebound time now that I have a real job again. Fall will be here soon. We are already looking to next year. Elections for the club will be coming soon and there will be some key positions to fill. Until then - see you on the water or on the docks. Recent events in our family have caused sadness and grieving. Having a dear one stuck down; suddenly, goes to remind us all of the fragility of our existence. I guess where I'm going with this is; laugh, love and value each moment. Celebrate every day, Find joy in each en- counter, each meeting. Never regret not following that dream. Be your Shining Light. Racing Here we are already past the middle of our racing season. Racing is proceeding very well with 35-39 yachts turning out for Windseekers. Typical for Commencement Bay we have had challenging race conditions. We also have new comers including Stay Gold, Second Wind ( Columbia 26 ) and Shin Dig. Welcome! Unfortunately, we have also had some sportsmanship issues. It's time to review the RRS (Racing Rules of Sailing). Clean races make for much more pleasant events. I am looking forward to a rousing rest of the season. Race Committee will also be looking for a few good men and ladies to assist on some races. I will be absent. I will be gone from August 12-22 (or there about), so on a couple of Wednesday s the committee will need help and for the Vashon Challenge on August 20. Commodore Nelson came up with some Vashon Sailing Instruction changes that will help make that race successful for all entrants. Later in the year RC would like help for our last race on about Halloween. In racing elsewhere. Huge congratulations go the Skipper and crew of Slick for their 1 st place win at Whidbey Island Race week. Also to GraceE taking 3 rd in their division. A huge thanks to Gardyloo and Jeopardy for showing the colors. ALSO We are watching CYCT s Karl Haflinger and crew on Shearwater, a J-35, near the half way celebration in the Pacific Cup. It s been a great summer of cruising with more to come. Here s a rundown on the action so far. Fair Winds, Rich and Angie Morales Fleet Captains Cruising S/V ARABESQUE Cruising vodkas, gins and whiskeys. Still others visited the Brewery to have a few...too many?? And a close contact of a flag pole kind. Inside laugh here. The Grill Off had the dads in fine form. There were plenty of grilled steaks, chops and chicken to feast upon. A number of salads and sides rounded out the meal. It was decided that each dad would receive a special grill master apron from Jenn Tenney. Sunday brought glorious sun and mild temperatures. Breakfast was yogurt, muffins and good conversations. A fine way to end the cruise and celebrate all our dads. Thanks Jenn and Tom Tenney for a great Cruise! June 18-19 Father's Day Cruise The event was held at the Public Dock in Gig Harbor. There were 10 boats which showed up for the weekend. Land yachters filtered in and out throughout the weekend too. The weather cooperated for the most part which allowed for some to take in a little shopping in the quaint shops which Gig Harbor is known for. July 4 Cruise to Quartermaster Harbor Hosts were Fred and Ursula Ahrens. Saturday had 12 boats. Some left early on Monday and a few showed up on Monday making a total that day 13. Saturday wine, cheese, and olives were served aboard Wild Oats. Potluck dinner was delicious and the weather cooperated on all 3 days. Dinghy race was held on Saturday contestants had to race around a mark using one paddle. The one with the best time would be the winner. Billy Carter was the time keeper. Contestants were Tom O'Hara, Don Kimball, Ken St. John, Gary Ballentine and Bruce, a new guest. First Place went to Bruce. He won a 6 pack of Stella Artois Beer. In the Ladies race, Ursula says Joy Ballentine won a pair of mermaid socks. Unclear who the contestants were. New guests Bruce and his wife Marge attended their first CYCT cruise. Discovery won Best Decorated Boat of Independence Day. The Morales' brought Rich's mom, sister, her husband and daughter as guests on Monday. Thanks to Valerie for the flowers and 4th of July pie. 2nd Annual Zombie Cruise July 23-24 Held at Des Moines Marina Hosts: Don and Deb McAdams Friday arrivals were Red Splash, Arabesque, and Cool Kat Dinner was on your own, followed by drinks on Arabesque. The Saturday Farmers Market was up and running. Lots of veggies, flowers, baked goods, foods of many kinds, crafters, The Wooden Boat Show, and wine tastings and live music were available. The weather was absolutely gorgeous for the entire weekend. Saturday arrivals: Naughty By Nature, Wind Up, Respite, Ska' Ana (new members, Bruce and Margie Blunt. Bruce brought his father-in-law as a guest. Margie was out of town), Gallivant, and Tatoosh. Total boats eight. A few land yachters showed also. Scavenger Hunt Teams Awards. 1st Place. Galavant 2nd Place. Arabesque Zombie Trivia Award. Best Costume Award. row) Ken St. John 3rd Place. Cool Kat Don Kimball (2nd year in a Saturday Zombie Dinner was prepared by our own Zombie Killer, Don McAdams. Plentiful Zombie innards (spaghetti) with red zombie sauce or a white vomit sauce. There were also many side dishes and desserts. After dinner we held a Bon Voyage Ceremony for Chris and Janet Wenderoth. Janet could not be there because she had a "date" with Kenny Chesney. The ceremony consisted of a reading of The Symbolic Meaning of the Seahorse, by Angie Morales. This was followed by a presentation of seahorses as good luck for their voyage. A Sailors Blessing was read. A symbolic cutting of the lines was provided by Julie St. John. Chris then cut the line which bound them to the land, after which everyone toasted with Makers Mark. Thank you to Julie St. John for the ceremony cake. The party continued on the Naughty boat and Don Taco made a musical appearance. We then moved to Arabesque till 2:15 am. WWW.CYCT.COM 8 MAINSHEET

Julie St. John Yesiree, it s time for the 5 th Annual WINE, WIND and SONG cruise to beautiful Longbranch in Filuchy Bay. This is one of our favorite destinations. Come for the view and stay for your friends. August 12 th - 14 th at Longbranch Marina We ll be headed out Friday night for Longbranch Marina. You can join us Friday or come down Saturday. Go just past McNeil Island and hang a right. Oh, and stay off three hundred feet from the guard towers! And be sure to check those tides going through the narrows. Longbranch is a peaceful place with incredible views. We ll cap off Saturday evening with steak and wine. Bring a side dish or dessert to share. We ll follow that off with a good old Don Taco sing along. Sunday morning we ll provide and continental breakfast you provide the coffee. Land yachters are welcome too with Longbranch less than an hour away on the Key Peninsula Highway. Reservations aren t necessary, but RSVP so we know just how much steak to buy! The Point Du Hoc Foundation - Ranger Regatta II From the Tacoma Yacht Club: Volunteer Boats are needed for the Ranger Regatta II. The event is Thursday, August 11th from 5:30-approximately 9pm. We need volunteer boats for approximately 2 hours at 7pm. We have 80 Rangers and wives/girlfriends registered at this time but 40 more that would love to participate! There are additional 30 sponsors. We had some very generous skippers volunteer, however still in need of additional support! For the Rangers, the fight in the Global War on Terror is not over. This is a great event to support a wonderful group of soldiers and their families. The 2nd Ranger Battalion is currently deployed to Afghanistan, and will continue to have deployments there for sometime. It begins with a gathering in the Club, which includes a Dinner, a short Program and Silent Auction. It then moves to the Guest Dock at TYC for a short evening cruise (about two hours). Skippers and crew are invited to attend the dinner provided by the Foundation. The TYC Board has approved and reserved the dock for this event. Secretary CYCT General Meeting Minutes 2016 Month: July The meeting was called to order +/-7:00 pm on June 13,2016, by Our Vice Commodore, Ken St John. Guests- Bruce Blunt who joined us for 4 th of July Cruise, Shawna from TWSA. Motion was made by Jen Tenney and seconded by Greg Sandwick to approve the prior month s minutes as posted on the website. Shining Light Award: Angie Morales nominated Terry and Pierre Michel for staying with Arabesque while Angie brought her smoking boat back from the July 4 th Cruise and Rich brought Romeo Charlie back. Reports Vice Commodore: Ken St John- standing in for Eric Nelson. No report Rear Commodore: Don Kimball- No report. Past Commodore: Treasurer: Dana Bachellerie-Gage- in Alaska, Wrangle. Secretary: Debbie McAdams- no report Membership Chair: Janice and Brock Vanravenswaay: Not present, but we have new members, Jen Ihlen- Ihlen Time (not present) and Jeremy Bush of Shindig, a San Juan 24. Fleet Captain Cruising: Angie and Rich Morales- The 4 th of July Cruise was hosted by Ursula and Fred Ahrens. A great time was had by all. In the dinghy races Bruce Blunt, a guest, won first place, Joy Ballentine was second. Guests included Bruce and Margie Blunt, The Morales family- Rich s family from Puerto Rico. The Zombie Cruise is up next, July 23-24 at Des Moines Marina, hosted by the McAdams. Costume contest, scavenger hunt, and trivia contest. August 13-14 brings the 3 rd or 4 th Wine, Wind and Song Cruise to Longbranch, hosted by the St Johns. Bring a potluck item to go with wine and steak. Then August 21 is Buns and Boats at Steel Lake Park in Federal Way hosted by the Pinkhams. 8:30 am until 1:00 pm. Bring your RC boats and some will be provided if you don t have one. First race stats at 9. Labor Day Cruise is still open. Fleet Captain Racing: Don Kimball- 3 hour tour #2 was last Saturday. All boats actually finished. Remember, we all need to play fair, use good sportsmanship! We are averaging 39 boats for Windseekers. Education: Penny Shen She found a great book called Stress Free Sailing for single/double handed sailing. Great for confidence building. Available at Amazon.com. A Diesel mechanic is willing to have us come to her workshop to learn engine repair, most likely after Labor Day. 12-15 limit. Man overboard drills- maybe combine them with a cruise. Maybe Brian White can do a race rules refresh. Social: Open- Club Merchandise: Jen Tenney- Has a bunch of merch to hand out to people who have ordered stuff. The one off stuff, pay Jen for her cost plus a donation to the club and she will embroider it for you and get it to you soon. NEW ITEM- Folding backpacks that can compact down to pocket size into its own built in pocket. $7.00. The View From the Rear (Musings of a Casual Racer) I've always depended on the kindness of strangers It s been a rough year and a half for the Naughty boat. Naughty s main issue was that her engine was old. Kind of like myself, the core of the engine was strong but the peripherals were failing. Unfortunately, it s easier to replace body parts than parts on a Universal 5424. Last year it was $3000 to fix an oil leak because replacement gear covers are no longer available. The water pump had been repaired but still leaked, the starter and alternator were on their way out. Everything though came to a head on the Friday of opening day weekend when the exhaust elbow broke in two. But I didn t come to talk about the engine. I came to talk about the boating community that helped me through. For myself, like most men I suspect, needing to ask for help is not an easy thing. But I needed to. Heck, even when I didn t ask, boaters helped. The broken elbow disaster started at the Freemont bridge. It was pretty simple to diagnose - jagged, broken pipe and water everywhere. Luckily the bilge pump moved the water out and we made it to Dock Zero. Chris Wenderoth spent a good part of Saturday evening trying to help me repair the engine we called Ugly Betty. Now working on that engine is like sitting on the floor in front of a dorm fridge trying to work on something way in the back - oh - and the light s out! But help he did. We were successful in making it so Ugly Betty never ran again. This posed a problem. What to do with Naughty. Thank goodness the fine folks at the Seattle Yacht Club allowed me to keep the boat there for a week - even though it meant moving her more than 1000 feet when they broke up the dock. The next Saturday though we had to move. Ever try finding temporary moorage in Seattle in the Spring? I called half a dozen marinas. Jennifer Tenney called some for me as well. Ray, the director at Fisherman s Terminal really helped us out. At first I thought he didn t want us there - he was just concerned about the cost and worked to make moorage as cheap as possible for the month we d be there. See not only is moorage hard to find in spring, so is a new engine and haul out date. CSR gave me a date almost four weeks out. Captain Dawn and her small crew did a great job moving us. Dawn is a skipper with TowBoat USA. We made it though three bridges in the driving rain without a hitch. That was a nervous hour for the Lovely and Gracious Mrs. St. John and myself. Talk about a nervous hour, that describes moving the boat a short half mile or so from our slip at Fisherman s to the lift at CSR. Count on Don McAdams to help. Don travelled to Ballard with us where we side tied the dinghy - Naughty Too and preceded to move the big boat. Perhaps I expected too much out of 5hp I thought as we crawled down the fairway. Nope - the shear pin on the outboard was broken. We were drifting down a (thankfully wide) fairway with no power with big fishing boats headed out! I looked at Don, he looked at me, and together we said roll out the jib?) Yes, we sailed out of the marina on a nice broad reach. By time we d reached the lift, the shear pin was replaced and all was well. Just a two hour ride home in traffic remained! Naughty was on the hard for two weeks so Joy and Gary Ballentine insisted on coming up on the weekend to help polish the hull. I know that really, Gary was just tired of looking at that chalky hunk of fiberglass. But to give up an entire Saturday. Wow! Jennifer Tenney and Deb McAdams even dropped by to supervise. I m sure that there are others I am forgetting. Ron Holbrook made calls to his old brokerage soliciting engine advice. Don Kimball let me take his feathering prop up to Seattle to see if it would fit - it didn t. So many people helped. At times I was distraught. I couldn t have done this without them. That s the great thing about our boating community. Don t be afraid to depend on the kindness of strangers. In boating, people aren t strangers for long.
