In Loving Memory of Dennis Peitso Maggie s Farm Salad
Longtime PMYC member Dennis Peitso passed away Wednesday March 8, in Santa Monica, CA. Born September 22, 1947 in Sandstone MN, the third son of Emil and Ruth Peitso. raised on a dairy farm in NE Minnesota, Denny enlisted in the US Navy after graduating from high school. Serving most of his naval career in SE Asian waters during the Vietnam War, he was based in or visited most naval ports in the region; Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc... After his service, Dennis traveled extensively throughout Europe, North Africa, the Near and Middle East, Afghanistan, India, eventually landing in Australia. Returning to America with his Aussie wife Rosemary, Denny began his academic career, narrowly escaping a Ph.D. at the last moment! His studies carried him to multiple Asian Cultural Institutes worldwide, majoring in Chinese Languages and History. Returning once again to the United States, his skill as a Finnish finish carpenter emerged. Working with and for family and friends, building custom furniture, cabinetry, and homes, Dennis bought his first sailboat 1978, thereby setting the course of the remainder of his life. A gaff-rigged schooner, wife, and children soon to follow, Dennis the farmer returned and never really left again. Beginning as backyard urban gardeners, growing salad greens and herbs, Dennis and wife Andrea would pioneer and help establish slow food and sustainable organic farming in everyday California life. When not expanding business or improving product, Dennis would go sailing. Swimming and sailing, fishing and sailing, whatever and sailing, he was always on the water. He logged many thousands of miles, usually as skipper, from Washington to Central Mexico. Catalina, Channel Islands Park, Baja, coastal wooden boat races, he was seldom tied up in a marina for long. Some random memories: Hitch-hiked from Amsterdam to Afghanistan in 1973. In one ride! Learned the real reason the Mayan Calendar ended, from a Mexican Secretary of State, in a rooftop swimming pool in Palm Springs. At 3 am! For 6 months, watched the sun rise over the walls of Marrakech. From his bedroom window! Attended Universities on three continents Was married in a Society page wedding. Twice! Was kicked out of Vegas! Got me my first Schooner ride! He was a man of many hats. Seldom neutral, he could fill (or empty) an entire room. He was my Skipper, my Brother, my Mentor, my Friend. And you can't say fairer than that! He will be missed. Andy Peitso

Curt Bersche - Commodore As you know, Opening Day takes months of preparation, planning and a lot of hard work. I would like take this opportunity to thank all of the PMYC members who volunteered their valuable time to clean, polish, cook, pick up and set up chairs, serve and help out with the multitude of other tasks that it takes to put on the best of all yacht club opening days. To those of you who step up year after year to make our club stand out from all of the other yacht clubs, I thank you. A special shout-out and thank you goes to Keith Mott, Rhonda and Peter Breum, Helene Smith, Tina and Rex Michel, Deborah Pitt, Gary Panas, Carol Butte, Cynthia Anzel, Kenny Rue, Larry Laurino, Mikey Blumenthal, Pat Garrett, Bob Gonzales, Irv Osser, Yolanda Vitkoff, Susan Sahli, and the list goes on and on. Thanks to everyone. Another huge thank you goes to our founding member, Phil Murray, who hilariously took us down memory lane and had the crowd laughing hysterically. I have been to a lot opening days and I have never seen anyone get a standing ovation. Thank you, Phil. Check out PMYC s new and improved website which was launched last week. We are still in the process of tweaking it, but it really looks fantastic. One of the new features is a member login where our members will be able to get information on events and cruises, Friday Night Dinners, photos, recipes, cruiser blogs, etc. Details will be out soon. Please let me know if you have any comments and suggestions. Thank you to our new web master, Lindsay Chodsky. For those members who have not yet picked up their 2017 roster and membership cards and are current with payment of their dues, the rosters and membership cards will be mailed out to you. Please be on the look-out. Thanks and see you at the Club! Curt Bersche Commodore

Michael Murbarger - Rear Commodore Ahoy Sailors! It looks like we are off to a great sailing season. The wind gods are looking favorably on us these last few days. They ve been blowing like crazy! Lots of exciting things in the works for this year. We have parties. We have cruises. We have lots of entertainment. Some already planned and some still in the planning stages. If you have something you d like to do this year, let me know. We are always looking for fun things to bring us all together. Our Commodore and House Manager are very supportive of most all activities at the Club. Let s keep them busy filling out those reservation forms. Speaking of the House Manager, I would like to put a call out for special recognition for Barrie Harnett. Barrie has done an exceptional job since taking over the House Manager duties. His devotion to the job, our club and especially our members is outstanding. From painting the deck, to power washing the walkway along the water front, to polishing brass for opening day, he never stops. He s like the Energizer Bunny. He has given us new TV s, New Flooring, New Pots and Pans and in the process, put some money in the bank. Thank You, Barrie. Well Done! I d also like to extend a special thank you to Rex Michel and Bill Austin for the extra effort they put forth before and during our annual club clean-up. Thanks to all our members who pitched in to get the clubhouse all spick and span for Opening Day. The Signup sheets were a little light this year so let s all try a little harder next year to clear our schedules so we can all support this, once a year effort. As always, we are indebted to our ladies, Rhonda, Tina, Helene, Deborah, Roxann and one of our newest members, Cynthia, for the wonderful food and preparations. All their hard work is the reason we have the best Opening Day in the Marina! One final thank you to goes to Gary Panas who designs and prints the banners and other printed artwork, and sadly, memorial posters, that you see up at various times of the year. Gary just gets it done. No fanfare. No publicity. He just quietly does the work and it shows up. Thank you, Gary. We all do appreciate it. That about takes care of old business. On with the new. It s that time of year again. Time to pay your club dues. If you haven t already paid them, now s the time. You don t need to wait to receive a bill from the Treasurer. The bank doesn t care if it s the first, middle or the last of the month. Send you checks in now. Get it over with before That Other Check is due the middle of the month. You know, the one to our favorite Uncle.
Lastly, as is my duty this year, here it comes...friday Night Dinners! John Meyer and the Sea Scouts made a huge effort for their annual dinner. Big turn out! Thanks guys (and girls). Great Job. So, members, let s keep it going. The sign-up sheet to host a dinner is on the Galley door. Whip out those old family recipes, swing by Costco or just order in and keep all the starving natives happy. No one cares what s on the menu. It s about spending time with our friends that we all look forward too. Sign up today. Catch you all next month. Be happy, healthy, kind to everyone, and sober if you are driving. Michael (Luigi) Murbarger Rear Commodore 2017
Tony Milazzo - Fleet Captain Thanks everyone for their hard work on the clubhouse preparing for opening day. Special thanks to those who made that day happen! It takes a village at PMYC! Being a mom & pop club means we all have to do something to "make it happen". Would like to take this opportunity to ask all the newer members of the last few years to volunteer when you can and get involved. I will be needing some volunteers for Cinco de Mayo weekend. Contact me if you want to have fun & help "make it happen". Fleet Inspection was Sat., March 3rd and everyone got to know each other and their boats a little bit better. It was a learning experience for all of us. Member: Capt. Ken Price & I took it seriously. Maybe Ken more so than I. He did a full shake down of every vessel while I helped by eating, drinking & taking notes. Some were more Capt. Ken Price prepared than others. One skipper said, "I didn't know you were going to ask us questions" lol I won't mention names. Overall the fleet is in good shape! The 1st mates all deserve an award for playing a major role in their skipper s entry. The awards were given out at opening day during the ceremony. BEST OVERALL : "Buen Camino" Bill Austin & 1st Mate; Parvin BEST PRESENTATION: "Laido Peter Perros & 1st Mate; Dionne BEST SAIL: "LaMay Isola" Scott LaMay & 1st Mate; Christine BEST POWER: "Always" Henry & Lindsay Chodsky Opening Day had many surprises! I didn't know I should book our founding father: Phil Murray for this year s Comedy Night. Who knew? Then the Blues Brothers showed up! Oh yeah, and the usual chicken fell out of the sky. After attending a few opening days, I can say "There is NO club like PMYC". Proud to be your Fleet Captain and look forward to leading you into the 2017 Cruise season filled with fun, adventure & PMYC Spirit!

Wendy Steinthal - Port Captain Ahoy! Wow, we are already a quarter into 2017 and the weather is getting warmer and the sun is finally shining. Over the next few weeks I will be working to get the dock straightened up to accommodate the sabots, kayaks and SUPs. There are a few spaces that might be available, so please reach out to me with what you are looking for and we will see what we can do. Finally, I would like to offer a big thank you to everyone that made Opening Day such a big success! We really pulled together, the club looked awesome and we had a phenomenal turnout. The OD list has been updated with April s and May s winners, please take a moment to see if you are a winner. See you around the club! Wendy Steinthal Port Captain
PAT GARRETT On Saturday, March 25th, I attended a Dockwalkers Training seminar at Burton Chase Park put on by the California State Parks Division of Boating. Dockwalkers are trained to provide face-to-face boater education and distribute boater kits with educational information while visiting marinas, boat launch ramps, boat shows, and events, and of course yacht clubs. Boaters receive a kit after completing a boater survey and pledge. This questionnaire helps to identify gaps in environmental services and improve future education efforts. Over 150 volunteers participated in the 11 trainings conducted in 2016. In 2016, volunteers distributed 6,300 boater kits, and donated over 1900 volunteer hours. In an effort to keep PMYC members informed and among the most educated boaters out there, I'd appreciate the opportunity to give a brief presentation and pass out the survey. As a reward for your participation, I'll give you a boater kit! Interested? Sure you are! Watch for the chance to participate at a FND sometime soon. Or if you simply can't wait, give me a call and I'll meet with you at our convenience. Here's to happy, clean boating! Pat Garrett p.m.garrett@verizon.net
