The 51st-ranked Aztecs, who are making their 20th consecutive regional appearance and 23rd overall, will be among the field vying for a spot in the NCAA national championship series, scheduled for May 25-30 in Stillwater, Okla. SDSU received the No. 9 seed out of 14 teams in the Norman Regional, earning one of 50 at-large bids to the NCAA tournament after posting 11 top-10 team finishes in 12 events during the 2018 campaign, including four top-five placements. A total of 81 NCAA Division I schools received invitations to play in one of six regional events that will be held concurrently this week in Stockton, Calif. (Pacific), Bryan, Texas (Texas A&M), Norman, Okla. (Oklahoma), Kissimmee, Fla. (UCF), Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State) and Raleigh, N.C. (North Carolina State). Joining the Aztecs at the par-72, 7,452-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club this week will be 13 other teams, including eight foes ranked in the Golfstat top 50, along with five individual competitors (75 golfers overall). The top five squads and low individual not on an advancing team will move on to nationals from each of the six regionals. Teams will complete 18 holes (54 total) of stroke play each of the three days, following a practice round on Sunday, May 13. SDSU will be paired with Brigham Young and Virginia for Monday s first round, which is set to begin on the No. 1 tee at 8:25 a.m. CT/6:25 a.m. PT, while starting times for Tuesday and Wednesday will be determined by team finishes. Live hole-by-hole results courtesy of Golfstat will be available for all three rounds on GoAztecs.com. SDSU Lineup 2017-18 Avg. The aforementioned quintet was utilized in two prior tournaments this year at the Lamkin San Diego Classic and K-State Bighorn Invitational. Samiere has the most regional experience of the group with his fourth consecutive postseason appearance, while Abercrombie and Norby find themselves in the thick of fight for the second year in row, joining first-time participants Anupansuebsai and Sugimoto. Samiere (71.31) and Abercrombie (72.40) are the only two players to have started all 12 tournaments for the Aztecs during the 2017-18 campaign. Last season, Samiere was the Aztecs top finisher at the Washington Regional outside of Seattle, where he tied for 22nd at 5-over 218, while Abercrombie landed in the 43rd position at 12-over 225, followed by Norby, who tied for 45th at 3-over 226. Aztecs At NCAA Regionals Since the NCAA regional format was adopted in 1989, SDSU has received a bid on 23 occasions, including a current streak of 20 straight from 1999 to 2018. However, this season marks the second time in which Aztecs will participate in a regional event based in the Central time zone after a 2014 excursion to Columbia, Mo. SDSU has advanced through regional competition into the national championship series on eight occasions, highlighted by a team title at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club in 2011, where the Scarlet and Black posted the program s lowest combined score in regional play with a 19-under 833 en route to a seven-stroke victory. The following season at Stanford Golf Course in 2012, the Aztecs turned in a second-place finish, with two-time All-American J.J. Spaun setting three team regional records, including lowest score (12-under 198), lowest round (7-under 63) and best individual finish (2nd). SDSU also landed in the runner-up spot at the New Haven Regional in 2015, where four players finished among the individual top 25, Norman Regional 5/2 5/1 SDSU Record Team Rankings Golfstat Golfweek vs. in 17-18 San Diego State 51 50 (7-10) Oklahoma 3 4 0-1 Auburn 10 9 0-0 Arkansas 15 15 0-1 Florida State 22 27 0-0 North Florida 27 26 0-0 Pepperdine 33 25 2-3 Brigham Young 39 41 0-4 Virginia 46 53 0-0 Nevada 58 55 3-1 Sam Houston State 71 70 1-0 UMKC 119 122 1-0 Navy 213 214 0-0 Prairie View A&M 256 269 0-0 including former Aztec All-American and 2017 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Xander Schauffele, who tied for fifth at 3-under 207. In 2016, the Aztecs added one of the most dramatic performances to the program s postseason lore after defeating Texas A&M on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to secure the Albuquerque Regional s fifth and final spot at the NCAA Championships. On the first playoff hole, former U.S. Amateur champion Gunn Yang holed out for a double-eagle with a 7-iron from 218 yards away, while Ryann Ree made an eagle of his own as the Aztecs topped the Aggies by three strokes (-5 to -2) on the par-5, 544-yard No. 1. The Competition The Aztecs are one of 10 teams in the Norman Regional ranked among the top 60 in the latest Golfstat rankings released May 2. Of those squads, five reside in the top 30, including tournament host and No. 3 Oklahoma, followed by Auburn (10), Arkansas (15), Florida State (22) and North Florida (27). The Aztecs own a 7-10 record in head-to-head results against seven of their regional foes during the 2017-18 campaign, including 1-0 marks vs. Sam Houston State and UMKC. SDSU has also maintained the upper hand against Nevada (3-1), but finds itself on the wrong side of the ledger vs. Pepperdine (2-3) and Brigham Young (0-4). A Look At The Course Situated on land that was once home to a U.S. Navy recreational facility, Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club opened for play in January 1951, after famous golf course architect and native Oklahoman Perry Maxwell was commissioned to build the project. In 1996, thanks to the generous contributions from OU supporters, especially that of namesake Jimmie Austin, an extensive renovation of the course was completed. World-renowned course architect Robert Cupp was chosen for the redesign, which remained true to features envisioned by Maxwell some 50 years earlier. Today, the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club continues to reflect the level of excellence for which the University of Oklahoma is well known. Working with Tripp Davis, golf course architect and member of the 1989 OU men s national championship golf team, the club completed major renovations to the course, infrastructure and facilities in 2017. In recognition of this excellence, the course has played host to the 1997 Oklahoma State Amateur and NCAA Regional, the Big 12 Women s Championship in 1998 and 2010, and most notably the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in 2009. The course hosted the 2013 U.S. Women s Amateur Public Links Championship and NCAA Regional Championships in 2012 (men s) and 2013 (women s) and is already scheduled to host more NCAA Regional Championships in 2019 and 2020. Backspin: 2017 NCAA Washington Regional San Diego State saw its 2016-17 campaign come to a disappointing conclusion with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Washington Regional at Aldarra Golf Club in Sammamish, Wash. The Aztecs fired a combined 14-over-par 298 during the final round to complete the tournament with a 54-hole total of 30-over 882 on the par-71, 6,885- yard course layout. SDSU entered the day just four shots out of fifth place, the requisite standing for a berth in the NCAA championship series, set for May 26-31 in Sugar Grove, Ill. However, the Aztecs were unable to keep pace, as Penn State (+11) shot a collective 285 to claim the Washington Regional s final spot in the national meet.

In addition, Texas A&M s Chandler Phillips finished alone in seventh place at 2-under 211 to secure the regional s individual bid from a non-advancing school to the NCAA finals. PJ Samiere was San Diego State s No. 1 golfer, matching his highest career regional finish with a tie for 22nd at 5-over 218. However, the Aztec junior tumbled 15 places on the leaderboard thanks to a final-round 76. Despite closing with eight pars and a birdie, Samiere was undone on the front nine by three bogeys as well as a triple-bogey on the par-4, 438-yard 18th. In addition, Gunn Yang finished three shots behind Samiere in a tie for 29th at 8-over 221 on the heels of a 74. The SDSU senior endured a trio of bogeys of his own on the front nine before rebounding with seven pars and one birdie. Despite the hiccups, Yang still managed to climb five spots from his previous position. The final round also marked the final collegiate appearance for fellow classmate Nahum Mendoza III who shot a 75 to finish the tournament in a tie for 34th at 9-over 222. The three-time all-mountain West performer led the team with 14 pars on the day, but drained just one birdie, as a triple-bogey on the par-5, 525-yard No. 11, his second hole of round, presaged an inauspicious round. Elsewhere, Blake Abercrombie climbed nine places into a tie for 43rd at 12-over 225 after logging the Aztecs lowest score of the day with a 73. Despite carding bogeys on three of his last four holes, the SDSU junior tied for the team lead wth three birdies, including a successful conversion on the par-4, 445-yard No. 5, which ranked as the most difficult hole for the tournament. The Aztec lineup also featured Trevor Norby, who ended the week one shot in back of Abercrombie at 13-over 226 following a 78. The redshirt freshman drained three birdies of his own, including an impressive drain on the par-3, 249-yard 13th, which ranked as the toughest hole of the final round. However, six bogeys and two doubles proved too much to overcome. Penn State s Cole Miller (-7) captured medalist honors after posting a final-round 68, while three golfers tied for the runner-up spot at 4-under, including Kent State s Ian Holt and the USC duo of Sean Crocker and Justin Suh. With rain exiting the area, average scores for the final round dipped by nearly a stroke to 74.41 on Wednesday, compared to Tuesday s 75.24 clip. All-Conference Aztecs San Diego State men s golfers PJ Samiere and Blake Abercrombie were selected to the 2018 all-mountain West team in a vote of the league s 11 head coaches on April 27. With their awards, Samiere and Abercrombie each received all-conference recognition for the second year in a row, giving the Aztecs multiple all-mw honorees for the eighth consecutive season. Samiere leads the Scarlet and Black with a 71.31 scoring average, which ranks fourth in the conference, to go with a team-leading five top-10 placements. The SDSU senior also tops the squad with 20 rounds at or below par, including 13 in the 60s. Samiere was the Aztecs No. 1 finisher in seven out of 12 events during the 2017-18 campaign thus far, including a solo fourth-place performance at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate last September. The reigning California State Amateur championship followed with a fifth-place showing at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational where he shot a career-best 12-under-par 201. In addition, Samiere tied for sixth earlier this month at the Western Intercollegiate, where he tied a tournament record with a collegiate-low 7-under 63 during the second round en route to earning MW Player of the Week honors. Along with Samiere, Abercrombie is the only other golfer to compete in all 12 events for SDSU this year. The Aztec senior ranks second on the squad with a 72.40 scoring average and has compiled four top-20 placements, including a solo sixth at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational last October, logging a career-best 16-under 200, which is tied for sixth on the school s all-time list for 54 holes. Abercrombie also shared team honors at the Mountain West Championship last week, where he fired a 3-over 219 to tie for 13th on the individual leaderboard. He was also the squad s No. 2 placer in five other events. For the season, Abercrombie has completed 13 rounds at or below par, including six in the 60s. At the aforementioned tournament in Hawaii, he carded a 65 on the first day to match a personal-best for 18 holes. Rewind: Aztecs Finish Eighth at MW Championship San Diego State finished in eighth place at the Mountain West Championship on April 22, after firing a collective 9-over-par 297 during the final round at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. Despite shaving six strokes off their score from the previous day, the Aztecs slipped one notch in the standings, completing the tournament with a 54-hole total of 20-over 884 on the par-72, 7,115-yard Olympic Course. With its results, SDSU also landed out of the top five at the MW Championship for the first time since 2008 and failed to have an individual place among the top four for the first time in 13 years. Blake Abercrombie and Trevor Norby were the Aztecs top finishers as each tied for 13th at 3-over 219. Abercrombie shot a final-round 73 to climb three spots on the leaderboard, highlighted by an eagle-2 on the par-4, 324-yard No. 18. The Aztec senior also recorded birdies on the No. 4 and No. 13 greens; however, five bogeys prevented a steeper ascent. Despite posting a team-high 13 pars, Norby was saddled with his second straight 75 thanks in part to a triple bogey on the par-4, 481-yard No. 3, which ranked as the fourth-toughest hole of the weekend. The SDSU sophomore regrouped with birdies on the ninth and 11th greens, but bogeys at No. 12 and No. 14 stymied his progress. In addition, PJ Samiere jumped four places into a tie for 21st at 5-over 221 after matching Abercrombie with a 73. The Aztec senior sank three birdies over the last four holes on the front nine to get to 2-under for the day. However, a bogey on the par-5 11th followed by a double at the par-3 No. 12 short-circuited his momentum. Still, Samiere was the lone SDSU without a blemish on his scorecard over the final six holes, closing with consecutive pars during that stretch. Elsewhere, Puwit Anupansuebsai completed his first appearance at the MW Championship in a tie for 27th at 9-over 225 following a final-round 76. Despite sharing the team lead with three birdies, including back-to-back drains on the 10th and 11th greens, the Aztec freshman was plagued by inconsistency throughout the day, suffering seven bogeys, including two on his final three holes. Likewise, Pablo Matesanz wrapped up his first-ever start in the conference tournament with a 54th-place finish at 23-over 239. Despite carding his best score of the weekend, the SDSU senior was unable to gain ground on the leaderboard, as seven bogeys, including five straight on the front nine, proved too much to overcome. UNLV, which secured its third consecutive team title, was the lone school to finish in red figures for the tournament, posting an 8-under 856 to keep second-place Colorado State (+3) at bay, while Nevada (+11) took third, followed by Fresno State (+17), Wyoming (+18) and New Mexico (+18). The Rebels also boasted the individual winner, as Shintaro Ban logged a tournament record 16-under 200 to easily outdistance Nevada s Grant Booth (-7), while San José State s Sean Yu and New Mexico s Galven Green tied for third at 2-under. 2017-18 Season Capsule Forced to compensate for the loss of three-time all-mountain West selection and 2016 third-team All-American Nahum Mendoza III, San Diego State witnessed a transition year during the 2017-18 campaign, as four freshmen made at least two varsity starts. Despite the influx of youth, the Aztecs produced a moderately successful season, recording top-10 finishes in 10 of 11 tournaments, including four in the top five. San Diego State endured a busy fall schedule that featured five events, highlighted by a second-place finish last October at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Kauai, Hawaii. The Aztecs shot a 47-under 817 for the tournament, marking the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Individually, SDSU boasted three top 15 finishers during its island adventure, including Blake Abercrombie, who tied for the sixth spot with a career-low 16-under 200, highlighted by a collegiate-best 65 in the opening round. In addition, Trevor Norby posted his highest placement in a Scarlet and Black uniform, tying for eighth at 12-under 204. The San Marcos High alumnus shot a 9-under 63 in the final round, which marked the Aztecs lowest 18-hole total since Alex Kang fired a 9-under 62 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in 2010. In addition, PJ Samiere tied for 13th at 9-under 207 in the return to his home state, including a second-round 65. Earlier, Samiere finished a solo fourth at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M., before landing in the fifth spot at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif., where he propelled SDSU to a fourth-place standing. The Aztec senior shot a season-best 12-under 201 on rounds of 66-66-69. SDSU struggled with inconsistency during the spring slate, but still managed a fourth-place finish at the Southwestern Invitational

SAN DIEGO STATE MEn'S GOLF NoTES PAGE 3 in late February at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., followed by a third-place tie at the Western Intercollegiate earlier this month in Santa Cruz, Calif. For the season, Samiere leads the Scarlet and Black with a 71.31 scoring average, which ranks fourth in the Mountain West, to go with five top-10 placements. The reigning California State Amateur champion tops the the squad with 20 rounds at or below par and has completed a team-leading 13 in the 60s. At the Western Intercollegiate, Samiere tied the tournament record with a 7-under 63 during the second round en route to a sixth-place tie on the leaderboard. For his efforts, the Kailua, Hawaii, native garnered Mountain West Men s Golfer of the Week accolades on April 12. Steve Sugimoto leads all Aztec freshmen with a 73.48 stroke average in eight events, which ranks fourth on the squad. In addition, fellow classmate Puwit Anupansuebsai was SDSU s No. 1 finisher at the Arizona Intercollegiate (T-28th) and the K-State Bighorn Invitational (T-25th). A product of Anaheim Discovery Christian School, the Thai native also tied for 11th at the Western Intercollegiate, highlighted by a second-round 66.
