Mr. Hockey: My Story PDF

THE DEFINITIVE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A SPORTS LEGENDThe NHL may never see anyone like Gordie Howe again. Known as Mr. Hockey, he led the Detroit Red Wings to four Stanley Cups and is the only player to have competed in the league in five different decades.in Mr. Hockey, the man widely recognized as the greatest all-around player the sport has ever seen tells the story of his incredible life...twenty consecutive seasons among the top five scorers in the NHL. One hundred points after the age of forty. Playing for Team Canada with his two sons. Gordie Howe rewrote the record books. But despite Howeâ s unyielding ferocity on the ice, his name has long been a byword for decency, generosity, and honesty off of it.going back to Howeâ s Depression-era roots and following him through his Hall of Fame career, his enduring marriage to his wife, Colleen, and his extraordinary relationship with his children, Mr. Hockey is the definitive account of the gameâ s most celebrated legacy, as told by the man himself.â FOREWORD BY BOBBY ORRINCLUDES PHOTOGRAPHS Paperback: 256 pages Publisher: Berkley; Reprint edition (September 1, 2015) Language: English ISBN-10: 0425279642 ISBN-13: 978-0425279649 Product Dimensions: 5.9 x 0.7 x 9 inches Shipping Weight: 12.6 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Average Customer Review: 4.7 out of 5 starsâ Â See all reviewsâ (97 customer reviews) Best Sellers Rank: #234,124 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #23 inâ Books > Biographies & Memoirs > Sports & Outdoors > Hockey #77 inâ Books > Sports & Outdoors > Hockey #158 inâ Books > Sports & Outdoors > Winter Sports I am a huge hockey fan and had a chance to see Gordie Howe play at the end of his career. I wanted to read his book after reading Derek Sanderson's and Bobby Orr's books. Sanderson's book was a lot of hyperbole but fun, Orr's book was dull as watching paint dry. Mr. Hockey on the other hand was a delight. Gordie's description of his childhood during the depression brought out a sense of reality and pathos but ultimately some hope. His thoughts about the people of Saskatoon helping each other and ultimately helping him succeed rang true and lacked the disingenuous feel

of so many other biographies. Howe is real and as he gets into his hockey life and career I am reminded of a mix of two movies "Slapshot" and "Young Blood". There is just something about the inside world of hockey that enthralls hockey fans. And yet Howe's writing reaches beyond that. He is Detroit of the Golden years,40's, 50's, 60's. And so much of his hockey is from the Golden years of 6 teams and rivalries that mattered. It's not what we have now, I can't get excited about Nashville playing Tampa Bay. But the strength of the book resounds with the importance of family. Gordie Howe playing on the same line with his sons is unprecedented in any sport and it is priceless. Hockey fan or not Mr. Hockey won't disappoint. Gordie Howe, is the best hockey player ever. You may disagree with me, but I will stand by those words until I die. A humble, kind gentleman until he gets on the ice. Gordie Howe said hockey players knew 2 languages, English and profanity. A kind gentleman off the ice, never turning fans away, often posing for pictures with fans of all ages. I have been lucky enough to have watched him in the 6 decades I've around. His man is a true Jewel of Detroit, his wife was one of the most intelligent woman of her time. I applaud you Gordie & Colleen Howe. Hockey will never see the likes of you 2 again. A great book, a must read for any hockey fan. This is the first hockey book I have ever read and I struck gold. Naturally I have been familiar with Gordie Howe's accomplishments with the Detroit Red Wings and have heard of several of the players mentioned in the book but I wouldn't know a red line from a blue line. Gordie Howe had the distinction of playing professional hockey in five different decades from the 1940s and into 1980 and his reason for being able to accomplish this fete is due to his love for the game.howe mentions his feelings of family that the Red Wings' franchise promoted and he bought into but found this not to be true as far as ownership relationships with its players were concerned. Howe relates his philosophy in dealing with opposing players on the ice and dealing with retribution whenever necessary.a special thrill for Gordie Howe took place when he joined the Houston Aeros of the WHA and teamed up his two of his sons, Mark and Marty, for four seasons. He concluded his career with two seasons with the New England Whalers of the WHA and the Hartford Whalers of the NHL. The last chapter is written by his three sons and daughter in which they relate the death of their mother and the trials and tribulations that their father has now been experiencing. As I write this Gordie Howe has since suffered a stroke and remains in critical condition. I am not a hockey fan but I chose well in purchasing this book and adding it to my ever-growing library. I'm sure you will enjoy it as well.

Great. Mr. Hockey was a friend of our family from the time he hit Detroit. Some of my family stories are actually true, too. Turns out my unclewas teaching in the school he went to in Saskatoon. Ya, we're Canucksand those of us in the family born here have dual citizenship. The storyis well written and very interesting from his point of view. He really wasmr. Hockey to us all the years that he played and beyond. Gordie Howe was Gord's favourite hockey player (they even share a birthday!). Gord read this book in April and though I'm not a hockey fan, he said I'd find it interesting and I put it on my "to be read" list. Howe passed away last week (on June 10) at the age of 88 and that prompted me to read it now.howe was a professional hockey player who was born in Saskatchewan. From 1946 to 1980, he played twenty-six seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) and six seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA). He started playing professional hockey while still in his teens with the Detroit Red Wings and spent his first 25 seasons there. He retired in 1971 and returned a couple years later to play hockey with his sons, Marty and Mark, with the Houston Aeros in the WHA. He retired for good in 1980 at the age of 52.He was nicknamed "Mr. Hockey" and is considered the most complete player to ever play the game and one of the greatest hockey players of all time. A 23-time NHL All-Star, he held many of the sport's scoring records until they were broken in the 1980s by Wayne Gretzky. He continues to hold NHL records for most games and seasons played.this is Howe's story told by the man himself. He begins with his roots in rural Saskatchewan as one of nine children born during the Depression to poor parents. He tells of his passion for hockey and that's all he ever wanted to do. He meets the love of his life, Colleen, while playing for Detroit and they raise four children. We know how good hockey players (and athletes in general) have it today with their huge salaries and life styles. It was interesting to read how it was back in the 1940s and 1950s... earning $2,000 a year and feeling grateful to have a job, and then discovering that the teams' owners had been taking advantage of them for many years.though a tough guy on the ice, Howe sounds like he was a nice guy.blog review post: [...] Hockey Canada's Learn All About Hockey: Color and Activity (Rule 1, Sports Color and Activity Books) The Hockey News: Hockey's Greatest Photos: The Bruce Bennett Collection Hockey Hall of Fame Heroes: Scorers, Goalies and Defensemen (Hockey Hall of Fame Kids) Mr. Hockey: My Story The Riverton Rifle: My Story — Straight Shooting on Hockey and on Life Sidney Crosby: The Inspirational Story of Hockey Superstar Sidney Crosby Herb Brooks: The Inside Story of a Hockey Mastermind My Last Fight: The True Story of a Hockey Rock Star Little Hockey (Little Sports) The
