Asst. 1 6 HOFSTRA-JAMES MADISON SERIES: Saturday's game is the seventh meeting between Hofstra and James Madison in a series that started in 1992. The Dukes hold a 4-2 series lead and have won the last three meetings including a 31-21 victory last year in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Pride had the game s first good scoring opportunity as Clarkson moved Hofstra to the JMU 25-yard line. But Pride running back Terry Crenshaw turned the ball over on a fumble and Dukes quarterback Justin Rascati engineered a nine-play, 77-yard drive with sophomore tailback Maurice Fenner carrying the ball to pay dirt from 4 yards out with 3:07 to play in the first quarter. David Rabil s extra point gave the Dukes the 7-0 lead. Fenner had 42 yards on three carries in the drive. But Hofstra responded with its own nine-play, 52-yard drive, prolonged by a leaping, diving catch by junior receiver Devale Ellis for a gain of 23 to the JMU 15-yard line, that extended the drive into the second quarter. On
the first play of the second quarter, after a penalty, Clarkson hit Ellis with a 21-yard bullet in the front left corner of the end zone for the score. Senior Chris Onorato s extra point tied the game at 7-7. James Madison took a 14-7 lead into the locker room at halftime following a 14-play, 88-yard drive that took 6:24 off the clock. The drive was capped off by a 6-yard scoring pass from Rascati to senior Chris Iorio. Rabil s extra point gave the Dukes a 14-7 lead with 1:06 to play in the first half. Banks picked up 34 yards on four rushes in the drive and added eight more on a catch to the Hofstra 15-yard line. Hofstra tied the game on the first possession of the second half. Devale Ellis gave the Pride great field position with a 56-yard kickoff return to the Dukes 44- yard line. Seven plays later Clarkson tied the game with a 1-yard run with Onorato s extra point tying the game at 14-14 with 12:06 to play in the third. The Dukes took the lead for good with 4:10 to play in the third as Fenner s second touchdown of the contest, this one a 3-yard scoring run, capped an 11-play, 58-yard drive and gave JMU a 21-14 lead. JMU had fourth-andone and third-and-one plays in the drive and converted both. The Dukes fifth-ranked rushing defense in I-AA stymied the Pride ground game, holding Hofstra to just 38 rushing yards on 11 carries in the second half. JMU added to the lead just 3:57 into the fourth quarter as the Dukes went on a 13-play, 92-yard drive with Fenner notching his third touchdown of the game on a 2- yard run for a 28-14 advantage. On the ensuing kickoff, the Dukes pooch-kicked to keep the ball away from Ellis and caught the Pride napping. JMU cornerback Clint Kent ran the kickoff down and recovered it at the Hofstra 23-yard line. The Pride defense held and the Dukes had to settle for a 34-yard field goal by Rabil with 8:38 to play in the game. The Pride closed the gap to 31-21 with 4:25 to play in the game as Clarkson hit freshman receiver Charles Sullivan with a 3-yard scoring pass, but it was too little too late. Fenner, one of two Dukes who topped the century mark in rushing in the contest, rushed 24 times and scored on runs of 4,3, and 2 yards in the game. Sophomore tailback Alvin Banks rushed 19 times for 118 yards, while sophomore quarterback Justin Rascati completed 19-of-22 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown in the winning effort. Hofstra was led by sophomore quarterback Anton Clarkson, who finished the contest 20-of-31 for 182 yards and two touchdowns. The Pride placed behind Massachusetts and New Hampshire in the North Division, while 2004 national champion James Madison and 2003 I-AA champ Delaware are picked one-two in the South Division. In 2004 the preseason poll favorites were Villanova in the South and Maine in the North. The Wildcats placed fourth and the Black Bears finished fifth in the final standings. The Atlantic 10 sent a record four teams William & Mary, New Hampshire, Delaware and James Madison to the I-AA Championships with JMU, which was picked fourth in the A10 South in the preseason poll, winning the national title.

Towson HOFSTRA LAST WEEK Game 3 - September 24, 2005 at Furman: Ingle Martin ran in from 1-yard out in the second overtime to give #9 Furman a 44-41 win over #17 Hofstra at Paladin Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina. The win ups Furman's record to 3-1 overall, while Hofstra slips to 2-1 with its first loss of the 2005 campaign. Hofstra sophomore kicker Rob Zarrilli nailed a careerhigh 47-yard field goal to send the game into a second overtime and gave the Pride a short-lived three-point lead with a 35-yarder in the second overtime period before Martin gave Furman the narrow three-point win. Hofstra got on the board first, just 1:29 into the contest, on Furman's first possession, as Pride senior defensive end Stephen Bowen stepped back in coverage and picked off an Ingle Martin pass at the 31 yard line and returned it for a touchdown. It was Bowen's first career interception. Rob Zarrilli's extra-point gave the Pride a 7-0 lead. But Furman came right back and started a 13- play, 75-yard drive with sophomore tailback Cedrick Gipson running the ball into the end zone from 8-yards out. Scott Beckler's extra-point tied the game at 7-7 with 8:23 to play in the first quarter. The Pride came right back as quarterback Anton Clarkson directed a nine play, 80-yard drive with junior running back Terry Crenshaw scoring on an 7-yard run. Zarrilli's PAT gave Hofstra a 14-7. Clarkson was 5-for-5 in the drive for 53 yards. Furman tied the game 3:28 into the second quarter when senior tailback Brandon Mays scored on a 10-yard run to cap a six play, 68-yard drive. Hofstra responded immediately and went 80 yards on five plays capped by a 30-yard touchdown pass to the corner from Clarkson to senior Devale Ellis. Sophomore running back Kareem Huggins was big in the drive, rushing twice for 11 yards and hauling in a pass for another 30 yards. But, once again, the Paladins went on a long drive to tie the game. Ingle Martin went 6- for-6 for 55 yards in the drive and ended the drive with a 6-yard scoring pass to Justin Stepp with 2:46 to play in the half. Furman took the lead early in the third quarter after the Paladins pinned the Pride deep in their own territory. Taking over on its own 42 yard line, Martin took the Paladins to paydirt in nine plays and hit sophomore flanker Patrick Sprague with a 6-yard scoring pass with 10:28 to play in the third quarter. Once again, Martin was key in the drive going 4-for-5 for 34 yards. The Pride dodged a bullet late in the quarter as Hofstra defensive ends Dan Garay and Stephen Bowen combined to strip the ball from Brandon Mays at the Hofstra one to end an 18-play, 72-yard Paladin drive. Pride tackle Ken Sussman recovered the ball at the one with 14 seconds to play in the quarter. Clarkson then engineered a 99-yard drive in nine plays and hit Brian Wolman with a 27-yard scoring pass down the middle 2:02 into the fourth quarter. The Pride forced Furman to punt on its next possession with Hofstra taking over on its own 36 yard line. Clarkson picked the Paladin defense apart and took the Pride 64 yards on seven plays and hit senior Marques Colston for a 11- yard touchdown pass on a third-and-10 play to take the lead. Zarrilli's extra-point gave the Pride a 35-28 lead with 9:37 to play in the fourth. However, Furman tied it with 32 seconds left when John Rust caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Martin to cap off a seven play, 46- yard drive to knot the score at 35-35 and force the overtime sessions. Clarkson finished the game 27-for-40 for 314 yards and three touchdowns. Ellis had 10 catches for 132 yards and a touchdown, while Colston had seven catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. Cole Haley led the defense with 13 tackles. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS VISIT: Saturday's game against defending I-AA national champions James Madison is the first of three contests against 2004-05 NCAA champions that will be played in Shuart Stadium during the 2005-06 academic year. The Hofstra men s lacrosse team will face defending national champions Johns Hopkins University at Shuart Stadium on March 11, 2006. In addition, the Hofstra women s lacrosse team will host the 2005 NCAA champions Northwestern University on February 24, 2006. AGAINST THE TOP 25: The Pride played its 15th game against a Top 25 opponent since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2001 this past Saturday at Furman. Hofstra is 4-11 in those contests. The Pride's last win over a Top 25 opponent came on November 8, 2003 when Hofstra downed seventh-ranked Villanova, 34-32, at Shuart Stadium. It was the Pride's second Top 20 victory of that season after having defeated #19 Northeastern, 24-14, on October 11, 2003. Hofstra's highest-ranked victory came on September 2, 2000 when the Pride edged #2 Montana, 10-9, in Missoula. OVERTIME: The Pride played its seventh overtime contest last Saturday in the double-overtime loss at #9 Furman. Hofstra is now 1-6 in extra period contests. The Pride's lone overtime victory came on November 7, 1998 when Chad Johnson booted a 22-yard field goal in the second overtime to give Hofstra a 41-38 win over New Hampshire. DEFENSE WORKS OVERTIME: The Hofstra defense pulled a lot of extra work, both in regulation and in overtime, last Saturday at Furman. The Pride defense was on the field for 38:10 of the 60 regulation time minutes because of Hofstra's quick-striking offense and Furman's methodical attack. The Furman time of possession wasn't a record though. Last year, James Madison held on to the ball for 38:31 in the Dukes' 31-21 win over the Pride on October 2, 2004 in Harrisonburg. 102 PLAYS: As if being on the field for 38:10 in the near 100-degree heat index at Furman last Saturday wasn't bad enough, the Hofstra defense also faced a Hofstra game record of 102 plays. TOTAL PLAYS: Prior to last weekend only the 1991 Pride offense recorded triple-digit plays in a Hofstra game. On November 2, 1991, Hofstra ran 76 pass plays and 24 running plays in a 30-26 victory over Towson at Minnegan Stadium. The Pride posted 533 passing yards and -29 rushing yards in the win. The I-AA record for plays in a game is 115 by Buffalo against Connecticut in 1997. THIS DAY IN HOFSTRA HISTORY: October 1, 1994 - Hofstra quarterback Carlos Garay, cousin of current Pride defensive end Dan Garay, passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third to lead the Pride to a 28-6 victory over 21st-ranked New Hampshire at Hofstra Stadium. Garay was 15-for-26 for 180 yards and two scores while senior Wayne Chrebet posted six catches for 125 yards and a 24-yard touchdown catch. K ROB ZARRILLI: Was named the Atlantic 10 Special Teams Player of the Week for his play at Furman last Saturday. He kicked a field goal in each of the overtime periods and was a perfect 5-for-5 in the PAT department to win the award. Junior linebacker Gian Villante, who suffered a pre-training camp knee injury and is out for the season, was named to the TSN All-America first team, senior offensive tackle Willie Colon was named to the second team and senior receiver Devale Ellis was an honorable mention selection. Villante was a I-AA All-America first team selection by The Sports Network and The Football Gazette as a sophomore in 2004 after recording 65 solo tackles and 64 assisted stops. His 129 total tackles ranked third in the Atlantic 10. Villante tallied double-digit tackles in nine of the 11 games and ranked in the Top 20 nationally and fourth in the A-10 with 16.5 tackles for loss. He was a second team All-America selection by The Associated Press and was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as I-AA Defensive Player of the Year. The Pride was 2-4 in 2003 and 1996. Hofstra is 1-0 at home this season. TELEVISION: The Hofstra Pride will have three games televised in the metropolitan area during the 2005 season. The Madison Square Garden (MSG) Network will air this week's game against James Madison and will pick up the Atlantic 10 Game of the Week on October 8 when the Pride travels to Delaware. Carl Reuter and Hofstra s all-time career reception leader Steve Jackson will describe the action on MSG this week. Hofstra s home opener against Stony Brook was televised on the Regional News Network (RNN).
