Idaho Women s Basketball Game Notes - Jan. 9, 2010 On Tap This Week: Idaho opens Western Athletic Conference play with a home game against Fresno State. The Vandal women have been off for nearly two weeks since their 47-40 home win over UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 28. Saturday s game is the first of a Vandal basketball doubleheader. The women still tip off at 3 p.m., while the men will follow against Louisiana Tech at 5:05 p.m. A Look at Fresno State The defending WAC champions are 10-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play following their 83-42 win over Hawai`i on Wednesday. Head coach Adrian Wiggins is 105-50 in his fifth full season at the school. The Bulldogs have won three of their last four games, with the only loss coming against No. 2 Stanford. Fresno State scores 70.3 per game and gives up 61.6. The Bulldogs shoot a lower percentage (.407) from the field than their opponents (.411), but they hold a very strong advantage on the perimeter. Fresno State shoots.348 from 3- point range and holds its opponents to just.288. The Bulldogs also make 9.3 long-range shots per game to lead the WAC and rank fifth in the NCAA. Rebounding is nearly even, as opponents get 37.7 and FS gets 37.2 per game. The Bulldogs also average 9.7 steals per game and have the WAC s best turnover margin. Junior guard Jaleesa Ross leads the team with 17.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. She ranks ninth in the NCAA in 3-pointers made (3.3/g) and hits 44.8 percent from the field. Junior guard Hayley Munro ranks second on the team in scoring at 10.0 per game, while five more players average between 6.1 and 8.4 points per game. Eight of the team s 12 active players have dished out at least 10 assists this year. Fresno State leads the all-time series by a 6-3 margin, but Idaho swept the Bulldogs last season and held them to their two lowest point outputs. Idaho s two wins over Fresno State last year were its first since the opening round of the 1986 Women s NIT. Idaho won the last game at Cowan Spectrum by a 59-47 margin. In that game, Yinka Olorunnife broke the Cowan Spectrum arena record with 20 rebounds. Last Time on the Court: It wasn t pretty, and at times it was downright ugly, but the Idaho women s basketball team used scrappy defense and a big-time scoring run to take down UC Santa Barbara by a 47-40 margin at Memorial Gym. Idaho (2-11) missed its first 20 attempts from the field and fell behind 16-1 before junior Rachele Kloke finally broke the curse with a 3-pointer at the 7:43 mark. UC Santa Barbara (3-8) couldn t take advantage of Idaho s poor shooting, because the Gauchos couldn t hang on to the ball. Vandal defenders stepped into passing lanes, pressured the ball and closed down shooters all night long, and the result was 19 first-half turnovers by UCSB and 29 total for the game. Mekia Valentine, the team s second-leading scorer on the season at 13.9 points per game, hit just two of her eight attempts and turned the ball over 10 times. Idaho shut down the inside game, but UCSB couldn t make the Vandals pay from the outside, as it hit just three of its 15 attempts from 3-point range. Despite their early offensive woes, the Vandals closed out the half on an 11-4 run to go into the break trailing by a 20-12 margin and gained some momentum in the process. After UCSB stretched its lead to 12 points at 29-17 with 14:35 left in the game, Idaho finally found its rhythm and rattled off 19 unanswered points to go up 36-29 at the 7:22 mark. The key during the run was balance, as five different Idaho players scored during the run, and they hit from all areas of the floor. Team Notes Junior Rachele Kloke, Idaho s leading scorer this year at 12.2 points per game, had a solid weekend at the World Vision Classic Nov. 27-29, as she averaged 10.7 points and 4.7 rebounds while hitting 46.4 percent from the field. She was rewarded with a spot on the World Vision Classic All-Star Team at the conclusion of the tournament. Sophomore guard Shaena Kuehu has only played in 41 games in her Idaho career, but she s already poised to crack the top-10 list for career 3-point field goals made. Kuehu has nailed 59 long-range shots during her career, 18 so far this season, and needs just five more to overtake Meg LeBlanc (1998-02) for 10th all-time. Idaho s 47 points on Dec. 28 against UC Santa Barbara are the fewest for Idaho in a win since the Vandals held Colorado State to a WAC-record-low eight made field goals in a 42-31 win on Dec. 18, 2007. Junior guard Rachele Kloke needs just 15 points to hit 500 for her career. The third-year player leads the team with 12.2 points per game. Senior Charlotte Otero s consecutive minutes played streak ended on Nov. 22 against Montana State at 825:34. She hadn t sat on the bench since the 3:00 mark in the second half at Portland on Dec. 28, 2008. Her minutes played streak crossed two seasons and 21 games. Junior guard Bianca Cheever scored 15 points in her Idaho debut against Gonzaga. Her 13 3-point field goal attempts in that game are the second-most in Memorial Gym history, while her five made 3-pointers are tied as the seventh-most. Last year, Yinka Olorunnife set a school record with 310 rebounds and an 11.1 average, but only three players on the team averaged at least 5.0 rebounds. This season, four Vandals, Olorunnife, Rachele Kloke, Shaena Kuehu and Jessica Graham, are averaging at least 5.0, while one more, Bianca Cheever, averages 4.8 per game for the year. At the 12:39 mark of the first half against Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 29, senior point guard Charlotte Otero dished her 300th career assist. With 90 points and 55 second-half points against Louisiana- Lafayette on Nov. 29, Idaho had its highest single-game points total and highest single-half points total since a 99-70 win at Utah Valley on Dec. 8, 2005. With 317 career assists, Otero is the WAC s career leader in that category. She currently ranks eighth in Idaho history in career assists, and needs 14 more to overtake Robin Behrens (1982-86) for seventh. With 59 rebounds so far this year, junior Yinka Olorunnife has pushed her career rebounding total to 588 and moved into eighth all-time in Idaho history. She needs 41 more to overtake Darci Pemberton (1998-02) for seventh all-time. Yinka Olorunnife saw three career streaks snap on Nov. 22 against Montana State. First, she failed to score a point for the first time in her career - a span of 56 games. She also came up short of five rebounds, which broke a streak of 31 consecutive games with at least five boards. Her streak of 55 consecutive starts also ended. Idaho was picked to finish fourth in both the preseason media and coaches WAC polls, which equals Idaho s previous best preseason ranking. The Vandals were picked to finish fourth in 2005-06, the team s first year in the conference. With an average height of 5 feet, 9.6 inches, Idaho boasts its tallest lineup since 2002-03, when the team averaged 5 feet, 11.1 inches. Idaho took a hit before the season even got started, as 2008-09 leading scorer and WAC Newcomer of the Year Derisa Taleni sustained a knee injury during preseason practices. She will redshirt the 2009-10 season and return for the Vandals in 2010-11. Idaho s 54-51 overtime loss at Eastern Washington was the team s fourth consecutive loss in extra time. The last time the Vandals won an overtime game was Jan. 19, 2008, when they beat Utah State 70-64 at the Cowan Spectrum. Head Coach Jon Newlee Jon Newlee San Diego State, 82 Second Season Career Record: 143-139 (11th Year) Record at Idaho: 15-26 (2nd Year) During his 25-year college coaching career, Newlee has led or helped lead his teams to 15 postseason tournaments, including six NCAA Tournament appearances. He led the Idaho women to the NCAA s seventh-best single-season turnaround last year and earned WAC Coach of the Year honors.
