Entrance at OS (map 117) ref 415661, post code CH4 7BB Overleigh Roundabout DIRECTIONS The route to the venue will be signposted from Handbridge, immediately south of the City Centre and the river Dee. From the M6 north or south exit at junction 20 and join the M56 signed to Chester and North Wales. Leave the M56 at junction 15 and join the M53 signed to Chester. Follow the M53 south which becomes the A55. Leave the A55 at junction 36 turning right towards Chester on the A483. Follow the A483 for 1½ miles to the Overleigh roundabout. At the Overleigh roundabout keep in the right hand lane and turn right to Handbridge. In half a mile turn right by a filling station signed to Queen s Park High School. Take the second left (South Crescent Road) and turn right at the end. Keep left along Lower Park Road and the entrance to the Meadows is reached at the corner. FEES: 8.00 per seat for seniors 6.00 per seat for juniors(u18) A late entry fee of 50% will be charged where appropriate (up to 1 hour before race)

Full payment must be received by the closing date to avoid late entry fees. CLOSING DATE: Friday July 23 rd 2010 complete with payment All paddlers should hold current comprehensive BCU membership. Those paddlers who cannot provide evidence of their membership will have to buy a BCU event ticket ( 3.00). The exceptions are juniors ranked in Divisions 7, 8 and 9 who are members of clubs with a registered junior section. Entries must be made using the official form or via the HRM entry system, full payment and a copy of all relevant BCU cards should be posted either with the official form or separately if entering via the HRM system. In this case please clearly state the club and / or first name on the HRM entry. All entrants MUST SHOW their individual ranking irrespective of the race entered. Only paddlers competing in National Championship events and wearing their club colours will score points towards the team trophy. Entries are welcome from overseas paddlers who are members of their own national federation affiliated to the ICF. BOOKING IN Team Leaders only may book in from 18.00 21.00 hrs on Friday 30 th July and from 08.00 hrs Saturday 31 st July and Sunday 1 st August. This will take place in the Queen s Park Rowing Club building situated at the entrance to the Meadows. Please note that for health and safety reasons there is no access from the water at the landing stage for this building. No late entries can be accepted later than 1 hour before the start of the relevant batch of races. NON-QUORATE EVENTS Should an event be non-quorate (less than three starters), paddlers will be transferred to the next most appropriate race. Paddlers, especially those in less popular races, are advised to check that their event is quorate in case it has been transferred to another time or day. BOAT NUMBERS Team leaders will be given a pack of prenumbered vertical number plates for all boats. Paddlers must use these number plates.

PROMOTIONS The BCU Marathon Committee reserve the right under rules 26/27 to promote or demote on the basis of the results at this event though there are no automatic promotions. PRIZES National Championship Medals will be awarded to 1 st 2 nd and 3 rd places in all quorate National Championship races (3 or more boats starting). Divisional medals will be awarded to 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd places in all quorate Divisional races. Winners of perpetual trophies will be presented with their trophy, but as the trophies are kept centrally by the Marathon Committee, a commemorative photograph will also be taken. Team trophies donated by the Marathon Committee will be presented to 1 st 2 nd and 3 rd place teams in the team competition. In addition prizes (not National Championship medals) will be awarded to 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd placed juniors in the Hody mini K2 race. RACING RULES This event will be run under the Marathon Racing Rules as per the Racing Handbook, specifically Part B - rules for competition 1 18 and 43 59. Particular attention should be paid to: Buoyancy Aids (Rule 5) These are compulsory for all paddlers ranked in Division 7, 8 and 9. This applies across age categories and in singles and doubles. Team leaders should decide if other paddlers should wear them according to prevailing conditions. All competitors in under 10 and under 12 races must wear buoyancy aids. Boat Bouyancy (Rule 5) Competitors must render their boats sufficiently buoyant to remain afloat and support the crew in rough water in the event of capsize. All boats will be inspected by marshals prior to the start of each set of races. Any boat that is clearly not compliant will be refused permission to race. In all other cases it will be the competitors responsibility to confirm compliance with Rule 5. Doubles Crews (Rules 45 and 47) Paddlers in K2/C2 crews in the National Championship races (age categories) who are in different age categories must race in a category that applies to both of them. For example an U18 may race as an U23 or senior but not as U16 or O35. Paddlers of K2/C2 in divisional races who are ranked in different divisions must race in a division as per Hasler rules (rule 26). Senior and Veteran Women may race in a double crew in Senior and veteran Men Kayak races of the same or higher division. Ages (Rules 43 and 44) Juniors must be under 10/12/14/16/18 as at 1 st January 2010 and veterans must be aged 34/39/44/49/54/59/64 or over on 1 st January 2010. Juniors & Divisional Races (Rule 47f) Divisional races are not available to juniors who should race in their appropriate National Championship category.

RIVER SAFETY Chester weir is approximately ½ mile downstream of the Meadows and the river Dee is tidal below Chester weir. This poses hazards including high sheer banks, slippery deep mud/silt and fast currents including a tidal bore. The weir itself is a hazardous place for paddlers in all states of water. For the safety of competitors all paddling on the river should be above Chester weir. High tides below the weir are expected at 4.00pm Saturday and 4.30pm Sunday. SPECTATORS The races take place over a number of laps of the course. Spectators may view the start, finish and portages from the Meadows and all of the rest of the course can be followed on a footpath running alongside the river (this may be muddy in places in wet weather). See the course diagram at the end of this document. REFRESHMENTS Paddler refreshments will be issued free to all competitors. Hot food (bacon butties etc.) and drinks plus cold snacks will be available to purchase throughout the weekend. MERCHANDISE A range of quality merchandise can be pre-ordered for collection at the event see the form attached or on the Website. T shirts in white only will be available for sale at the event. CAMPING Camping is available on a designated area of the Meadows from 18.00 on Friday 30 th July to 17.30 on Sunday 1 st August. The cost is 10 per unit for the weekend or part thereof. All campers should book in as they enter the parking/camping area and display the ticket issued in their vehicle. The area for camping will be clearly marked and marshalled in line with Council requirements. Caravans and large motorhomes must remain on a specially designated part of the car park and not moved to the camping area. Toilets and water will be available on the camping area. Refuse bags and bins will be provided. Chester Sailing and Canoeing Club cannot be liable for any incidents of theft etc. Campers should take sensible precautions to avoid attracting thieves. Valuables should be locked away. OTHER ACCOMODATION Chester offers a large number and wide variety of accommodation options to suit all pockets. Try the Chester Tourist Information website www.chestertourist.com SHOWERS AND TOILET FACILITIES Toilets will be situated in the camping area near the start, in the car park and at the booking-in building. Shower facilities for men and women will be available during the hours of racing at the booking-in building and in the changing rooms in the Dinghy Park on the opposite side of the river. A public ferry runs across the river from the start area for a small fee. Showers will also be available in the changing rooms at the CSCC clubhouse prior to the BCU Marathon section meeting on Saturday evening see below. CAR PARKING The main car park will be on the flat grassed area immediately inside the entrance gate to the Meadows and a short distance from the start/finish area. There will be a charge of 3 per day for parking. Please park as instructed by the marshals. Only

vehicles displaying camping tickets will be allowed to progress beyond the car park and park in the camping area. Boat trailers must be left in a specially designated part of the car park. All paddlers should note that pre-race boat checking and launching will take place between the car park and the camping area immediately downstream of Turn B. DISABLED FACILITIES Disabled badge holders may park at the end of the camping area where there will also be a disabled toilet. BCU MARATHON MEETING The half yearly meeting of the Marathon section is taking place at 18.30 on Saturday 31 st July in the CSCC clubhouse at the top of Sandy Lane. The bar will be open from 18.00 until 22.30 and a motor boat ferry will operate between the campsite and the clubhouse. All are welcome. Showers will be available prior to the meeting.
