COWBOYS & GIANTS Season Series: The Cowboys and Giants have squared off 92 times with Dallas holding a 54-36-2 advantage. Series Notables: * The Cowboys have only faced two teams - Philadelphia (98) and Washington (97) - more than they have faced the Giants (92). * Of the last 20 games, 12 have been decided by a touchdownor-less, with nine of those by four points-or-less and three in overtime. * The Cowboys longest win streak in the series is 12 games, from 1974-80 - the second-longest win streak over a single opponent in Dallas history. * These teams tied their first ever meeting 31-31 in 1960, marking Dallas s only non-loss of its inaugural season. * The teams have met just once in the playoffs - the 2007 Divisional Playoff Game. A Cowboys Win Would: * Give Dallas its fourth straight regular season win over the Giants. * Improve the Cowboys record to 17-3 going into a bye and the club s sixth straight win in the week prior to the bye. * Allow Dallas to improve its 2008 record against NFC East foes to 2-1. * Mark the 18th time the Cowboys have a 6-3 record through the first nine games of a 16-game season. WADE PHILLIPS (66-49, 7TH YEAR, 18-7 - DAL.) Wade Phillips was named the seventh head coach in Dallas Cowboys history on Feb. 8, 2007. Phillips, now in his 32nd year as an NFL coach, has guided his teams to four playoff appearances with only one non-winning season. His first season in Dallas was no exception as the Cowboys tied the franchise record with 13 wins. En route to a 13-3 record, Dallas captured the 20th division title in franchise history. Under Phillips' guidance, the Cowboys sent a league record 13 players to the Pro Bowl. Phillips had head coaching stops with the Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills. He also served as an interim head coach in New Orleans in 1985 (1-3 record) and Atlanta in 2003 (2-1). The last seven times Phillips has taken over as a head coach or defensive coordinator, his new team has reached the playoffs in his first season. Over the last 19 years as a head coach or coordinator, he has been a part of only four teams with nonwinning records. During that span, his defenses have ranked in the NFL's top-10 nine times. He served as the defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers for three seasons before landing in Dallas. He spent two years (2002-03) as the defensive coordinator in Atlanta. From 1998-2000 he was Buffalo's head coach and was its defensive coordinator (1995-97) after a two-year stint as Denver's head coach (1993-94). He served as the Broncos defensive coordinator for four seasons (1989-92). He was the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator and linebackers coach (1986-88) after serving as the Saints defensive coordinator (1981-85). He made his coaching debut in 1976 under his father, Bum, with the Houston Oilers (linebackers) then coached the defensive line from 1977-1980. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Coming into this week s game, below are some attainable milestones: Brad Johnson - 35 attempts shy of Jake Plummer for 29th on the league s all-time attempts list. - Five completions to pass Steve Young for 21st all-time. Terrell Owens - One touchdown will give Owens sole possession of fourth on the league s all-time touchdown list (137). - Four catches to become the 19th player in club history with 200 receptions. - 34 yards will make him the 15th player in club history to reach 3,000 receiving yards. - 47 yards will allow him to pass Emmitt Smith (3,012) for 14th in club record books. Jason Witten - three catches to move to 20th all-time among tight ends and six to become the 20th tight end in league history to have 400 career catches. ALL IN THE FAMILY This week s game at New York is Dallas third of six divisional games for the Cowboys this season. The Cowboys finished the 2007 season 4-2 in division play after finishing 2-4 in 2006. They opened the 2007 home season hosting the Philadelphia Eagles for their first divisional game and won 41-37. The club then fell to Washington 26-24 in the second. Overall, the Cowboys hold a 165-118-4 record against current NFC East foes. Tom Coughlin was named the 16th head coach in Giants history on Jan. 6, 2004. He led the Giants to an 11-5 record, an NFC East title and the playoffs in 2005 then guided the club to the playoffs once again in 2006. He then guided the Giants to a Super Bowl XLII championship in 2007. Before landing in New York, Coughlin spent eight seasons at the reigns of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Under Coughlin, Jacksonville had the most victories of any NFL expansion team in its first seven seasons. They were also the only expansion team in NFL history to advance to the playoffs four times in their first five seasons. Coughlin s team went 9-7 in 1996 on the way to the AFC Championship Game, and earned playoff berths in both 1997 and 1998. In 1999, Coughlin posted an NFL-best 14-2 record in the regular season and a second AFC Championship Game appearance. He became the first coach in Jaguars history on Feb. 21, 1994. Before that, Coughlin coached the wide receivers for the Philadelphia Eagles (1984-85), Green Bay Packers (1986-87) and New York Giants (1988-1990). He was a member the Giants coaching staff that took home a Super Bowl XXV championship. Before heading to the NFL, Coughlin was Boston College s head coach (1991-93), posting a 21-13-1 record. He coached at Syracuse (1969, 1974-80), and was the head coach at Rochester Institute of Technology (1970-73). He played wingback at Syracuse (1965-67), with teammates Larry Csonka and Floyd Little. He graduated with both a bachelor s and a master s from Syracuse. STATISTICAL COMPARISON (league ranking) Cowboys Giants Record...5-3 6-1 Scoring Avg. DALLAS LAST WEEK The Dallas Cowboys rebounded from a two-game losing skid with a 13-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the Cowboys offense struggled early, Dallas defense was able to hold Tampa Bay s offense to two field goals (38,45) by Matt Bryant in the first quarter. The Cowboys got on board in the second quarter when Nick Folk drilled a 38-yard field goal to bring the score to 6-3. In the closing minutes of the second quarter, Dallas was able to drive 59 yards in 10 plays and take up 2:23 on the clock before Brad Johnson found Roy Williams in the corner of the endzone for a two-yard touchdown grab - his first as a Cowboy - to take a 10-6 lead with one second left before the end of the half. The defensive struggle continued into the second half as the most each team could muster was a field goal each in the third quarter - a 45-yarder by Folk, followed by a 41-yarder by Bryant - to bring the score to 13-9 heading into the fourth quarter. After both teams punted three times through the fourth quarter, the Buccaneers managed to drive to the Dallas 18-yard line on what would be their final drive, but on a fourth-and-5, Jeff Garcia s pass to Jerramy Stevens fell incomplete, allowing the Cowboys to capture the 13-9 win.
