In seven seasons, SSU s men s basketball team has showed tremendous improvement during the Broadnax era. As the Institution s 11 th head coach, he inherited a team that had a 0-28 record prior to his arrival in 2005. By 2008-09, Broadnax guided the Tigers to its first winning season in over 20 years with a 15-14 record. In 2011-12, the Tigers reached another milestone, winning the first ever Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Regular Season Championship with a 14-2 conference record. The team also earned the University its first ever automatic bid to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). For the team s accomplishments, Broadnax was the named the 2011-12 ME- AC Coach of the Year. SSU finished the 2007 season with a 12-18 record earning the distinction of the most wins in Division I school history at that time. In 2008, the team set another Division I record for most wins finishing the season 13-18. The 13-win season was the most wins for any SSU team in 12 years. During the 2007 and 2008 seasons the Tigers have enjoyed back-to -back home wins over Conference USA member Southern Mississippi. Broadnax has not only helped to change the attitude of the team, but is also changing opposing team s perceptions as well. Broadnax made a name for himself during his college career by helping lead Georgetown University to the 1984 NCAA Men s National Championship Title and as National Championship runner-ups in 1985. Horace s Georgetown team was an incredible 115-25 over his four-year career, including 30 plus wins seasons in 1984 and 1985. After receiving his Finance degree from Georgetown in 1986, Horace continued on in his studies, obtaining his Juris Doctorate from Florida State University in 1991. Broadnax came to SSU after practicing law for three years. Prior, he was the head men s basketball coach at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Fla., from 1997 until 2002. The Plant City, Fla., native is credited with reviving the men s basketball program at Bethune-Cookman College. During his second year as head coach at Bethune- Cookman, Broadnax was voted the men s Coach of the Year in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) after turning around a team that finished 1-26 in his first year as coach to a fifth-place finish with a 10-9 conference record. Broadnax earned the title again after the men s team earned its first number one ranking in the MEAC during the 1999-2000 regular season. Broadnax stepped down in 2002 for family reasons. Prior to joining Bethune-Cookman College, Broadnax was the head men s basketball coach at Valencia Community College in Orlando, Fla., for two years, where he recorded the school s first 20-win season in 1996-97. He also worked as the video coordinator for the men s basketball team at the University of Florida and held assistant basketball coaching positions at Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fla. Broadnax received his bachelor s degree in finance at Georgetown University in 1986. At Georgetown, he was a point guard for the legendary coach John Thompson and helped the Hoyas win the 1984 NCAA title. Broadnax received his law degree from Florida State College of Law in Tallahassee, Fla., in 1991, and became a member of the Florida Bar in 1993.He has been a law partner at the Orlando, Fla., firm of Morgan, Colling & Gilbert since 1998, and has worked as an attorney-at -law in the Law Office of Joseph Williams in Plant City, Fla. He is married to Tammy Broadnax and the couple has two sons, Horace Kaleb (12) and Randall Trent (10).

The Tigers posted a 21-12 overall record, won the Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference regular season title and advanced to the first round of the National Invitational Tournament. Not bad for a program that went 0-28 during the 2005-06 campaign. SSU s storied history of winning goes back to the 1940s under the legendary Ted Wright and continued under other coaches such as Leo Richardson, Russell Ellington and Jimmy Westley. The Tigers downward slide started in the late 1980 s and continued for over 20 years. However the hiring of Horace Broadnax has brought a renewed spirit back to the program. The 2012-13 SSU team is set to return all five starters in guards Deric Rudolph (5-11, 175), Preston Blackman (6-0, 170) and Cedric Smith (6-3, 190). Post players Rashad Hassan (6-7, 215) and Jyles Smith (6-8, 200) are back as is sixth man Arnold Louis (6-7, 205). Jyles Smith is the only junior among the top six players while the rest are seniors. In fact, the squad has seven seniors and nine juniors. No freshmen or sophomores can be found on the roster. Hassan led the team in scoring with 13 points a game while Rudolph was second with 10.7 points a game. Arnold contributed 9.5 points a game while Blackman scored 9 points a game. When it came to outside shooting, Rudolph made 98 of his 3-point attempts while Blackman made 44. Louis led the team in rebounding with 7.8 per game while Hassan grabbed 5.3 per game. Cedric Smith averaged 4.8 points and 4.6 rebounds while Jyles Smith averaged 4.4 rebounds and 4.1 points. When Blackman was not scoring he was dishing the ball to his teammates, averaging five assists per game. Arnold led the team in steals with 40 while Jyles Smith had 62 blocks. Senior forward Josh Montgomery will be a key contributor off the bench as will be guards Stephen Wilson and Keierre Richards. Montgomery (6-4, 195) averaged five points a game while Wilson (6-1, 160) and Richards (6-1, 180) averaged 2.2 and 1.8 points respectively. Other returnees include juniors Marcus Hutchins (6-4, 180), Chris Spears (6-7, 220), Patrick Hendley (6-4, 190), Angelo Davis (6-1, 165) and senior Richard Conner (6-4, 205). Broadnax added two junior college transfer guards during the off-season in Khiry White and Deven Williams. White (6-3, 180) attended South Georgia Technical College while Williams (6-1, 180) attended Olive Harvey College. White was named to the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association s (GCAA) All -Conference 2nd team and averaged 14.5 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Williams scored 25.9 points a game and averaged 2.95 rebounds, 2.35 assists and 1.4 steals He also shot 50 percent from the field and made 46 percent of his 3-point attempts. SSU will begin the season with a pair of exhibition games against former rivals. The Tigers will host cross-town foe Armstrong Atlantic State on November 1 and Fort Valley State on Nov. 5. The regular season starts on Nov. 9 with Trinity Baptist coming to Savannah followed by home dates with Middle Tennessee (Nov. 13) and North Florida (Nov. 14). After road games with Alabama State (Nov 16), Central Florida (Nov 18) and Florida (Nov 20), SSU returns home to host Robert Morris on November 26 and begins MEAC play on December 1 when they welcome Norfolk State to Tiger Arena. Other non-conference road games include Ohio State, Marquette, Marshall and St. Louis. Individual MEAC Rankings Scoring 1. Adrien Coleman BCU...18.8 2. Jamie Adams-FAMU...17.0 3.
