The Lady Flames will be in search of their sixth consecutive victory over the Lady Eagles. In their most recent trip to the Winthrop Coliseum (Feb. 15, 2010), Liberty set a program record for fewest points allowed in a 52-18 win over Winthrop. Last Time Out Liberty closed its three-game homestand with a 58-54 triumph over Coastal Carolina, Monday at the Vines Center. The Chanticleers cut a 12-point second-half defi cit to two, before Avery Warley stepped up for the Lady Flames. Warley had a blocked shot, two rebounds and shot four-for-four from the foul line during the game s fi nal 85 seconds. She fi nished the contest with 14 points and 13 rebounds. A Look Ahead The Lady Flames will head to Gardner-Webb, Monday at 7 p.m. The contest will be the fi rst matchup between the two teams since the title game of the 2010 Big South Women s Basketball Championship. Liberty won that meeting, 68-66, after Devon Brown hit the game-winning shot with 4.2 seconds remaining. Liberty and Gardner-Webb have faced off in each of the last two Big South Women s Basketball Championship title tilts. His teams have averaged 24 victories per year, while becoming a regular fi xture in the NCAA Tournament. Green has accumulated a 275-91 record on the Liberty bench, good for a winning percentage of.751. He ranked 10th all-time among NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches in winning percentage to begin the year, ahead of renowned coaching names like Rutgers Vivian Stringer, LSU s Van Chancellor and North Carolina s Sylvia Hatchell. More importantly, Liberty has won the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament 10 times with Green as head coach. Liberty has totaled 23 or more victories during nine of those years, including the 2004-05 season, which saw the Lady Flames reach the Sweet 16 for the fi rst time in program history. Green has actually been to the postseason on 22 occasions as a women s basketball coach, a span which includes a dozen years as an assistant coach at Clemson. In all but one of the 22 appearances, he has experienced the NCAA Tournament. In 2009-10, Liberty made another trip to the Big Dance, despite fi elding a young team which featured only one senior. The Lady Flames fi nished the year with a 27-6 record and hoisted the Big South Tournament championship trophy for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons. Rebounding and defense have always been staples of Green-coached teams, and the 2009-10 Lady Flames were certainly no exception. Liberty outrebounded opponents by an average of 13.9 caroms per game, leading the nation in the category. The Lady Flames have now been listed among the nation s top fi ve teams in rebounding margin for seven straight years. Liberty previously led the nation in the category in 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames also ended the season ranked in the top 10 nationally for scoring defense (second, school-record 50.0 ppg), fi eld goal percentage (second,.482) and scoring margin (seventh, +17.2). A key late-season conference victory over High Point in 2006 made Green the winningest coach in Big South Conference history. He is also Liberty s career wins leader. The 2004-05 year was a special one on Liberty Mountain, for many reasons. A seniorladen Lady Flames team recorded upset wins over No. 4 seed Penn State (78-70) and No. 5 seed DePaul (88-79) in the fi rst two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second team ever to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed. The Lady Flames ended the season with their highest national ranking to date, 21st (USA Today/ESPN). Green s track record shows he has the ability to meet those challenges. The Lady Flames have recorded two wins over UNLV, Virginia and West Virginia and solo victories over No. 19 DePaul, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 25 Penn State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest during Green s tenure. The upset victory over No. 23 Virginia in 2003 marked Liberty s fi rst win over a Top 25 team. His record against conference foes is equally impressive. He led the Lady Flames on a Big South record 47-game winning streak and currently owns a.912 (176-17) winning percentage against conference teams. The recent string of success includes a 65-55 home win over Radford on Jan. 15, which is the conference-leading Highlanders lone Big South setback. Winthrop s greatest strength is its defense. The Lady Eagles pace the Big South and rank No. 16 nationally in fi eld goal percentage defense (.345), while yielding only 56.2 ppg. Winthrop has held 13 straight opponents under the 70-point mark. Dequesha McClanahan, a 5-8 freshman guard, has established herself as a favorite for the Big South Freshman of the Year award. A fi ve-time Big South Freshman of the Week, McClanahan leads the Lady Eagles in points (13.7 ppg), assists (3.7 apg) and steals (2.5 spg). She has boosted her scoring to 16.5 ppg in conference contests. The team s leading rebounder is 6-3 junior center TaQuoia Hammick. She pulls down 6.1 rpg, including 7.4 rpg in conference games. The Coaching Matchup Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his 12th season with the Lady Flames, and has led his team to 10 Big South titles. A fi ve-time Big South Coach of the Year, Green owns a 275-91 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.751) ranked 10th all-time among NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches at the season s outset. Green is 25-1 all-time against Winthrop. Bud Childers is 80-126 in his seventh season as Winthrop s head coach and is 455-361 in 29 total seasons as a collegiate head coach. Childers has also coached at Cumberland College, Montevallo, Murray State, Louisville and James Madison. He was named 1997 Conference USA Coach of the Year and 2000 CAA Coach of the Year. Childers is 2-14 all-time versus Liberty. Liberty-Winthrop Series Notes Liberty is 39-7 all-time versus Winthrop, including fi ve straight victories by the Lady Flames. The last time the Eagles scored 60 points against Liberty was Jan. 19, 2002, when the Lady Flames posted a 74-64 victory at the Winthrop Coliseum. Last year, Liberty set a program record for fewest points allowed in a 52-18 victory at Winthrop. The Feb. 15, 2010 contest saw the Lady Flames limit the Eagles to 11.9 percent fi eld goal shooting. Devon Brown scored 15 points and Danika Dale added 11 to pace Liberty s attack. Avery Warley played a key role in Liberty s come-from-behind win at the Winthrop Coliseum on Jan. 10, 2009. Her putback with 30.0 seconds remaining gave the Lady Flames the lead for good during a 55-51 win. Thirteen of their 19 contests have been played away from the Vines Center. Liberty has played well on the road lately and enters Saturday s game on a fi ve-game road winning streak. The streak includes a trio of Big South Conference wins over High Point, Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville. Preparing for the Palmetto State Saturday s game will mark Liberty s second visit to South Carolina this season, after a Jan. 8 contest at Presbyterian College. The Lady Flames will later head to Coastal Carolina (Feb. 26) and Charleston Southern (Feb. 28). Since the start of the 1997-98 season, Liberty is 40-2 in Big South Conference games played in South Carolina, including a 51-40 win over Presbyterian College on Jan. 8. Start Me Up The quintet of Emily Frazier, Devon Brown, Jelena Antic, Tolu Omotola and Avery Warley has started each of the last nine games for the Lady Flames, leading Liberty to a 7-2 record during the stretch. The fi ve players are averaging 49.7 ppg and 30.8 ppg, while shooting 45.7 percent from the fi eld and 72.8 percent from the foul line in the last nine games. Head Coach Carey Green had used three different starting lineups before settling on his current grouping. One of Two Through games played on Jan. 25, Liberty is one of only two NCAA Division I schools to have both a women s basketball player and men s basketball player who has recorded 10 or more double-doubles this season. Avery Warley has posted 10 double-doubles for the Lady Flames, while John Brown has notched 10 double-doubles for the Liberty men s squad. Morehead State is the other school which can make this distinction, thanks to Kenneth Faried and Ashar Harris. First Since Feenstra Avery Warley led all players in both points (14) and rebounds (13) Monday against Coastal Carolina, accounting for her fi fth straight double-double. She is the fi rst Lady Flame to record fi ve consecutive double-doubles since Katie Feenstra, who had fi ve double-doubles in succession between Feb. 19 and March 5, 2005. In Good Company With 23 career double-doubles, Avery Warley is tied with Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Theresa Bream for fourth place in program history. She trails only a pair of WNBA players (Megan Frazee and Katie Feenstra) and another Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer (Elena Kisseleva). Frazee owns the school record with 50 double-doubles, followed by Feenstra with 49. Kisseleva fi nished with 25 double-doubles. New Year s Resolution Liberty owns a 169-107 all-time record in January contests, including an 85-10 mark under head coach Carey Green. Last season, the Lady Flames went 8-1 during the calendar year s fi rst month. This year, Liberty is 6-1 in January, with four of the victories coming on the road. The Lady Flames, who have nine January games on the schedule this year, had won 42 straight January home games, before their 62-53 loss to Radford on Jan. 17. See You Soon! Omotola is averaging a team-high 6.7 ppg and 4.0 rpg during the fi rst half of Liberty s conference contests. Meanwhile, Warley has stepped up her play after halftime. She is averaging 7.3 ppg and 6.7 rpg during the fi nal 20 minutes of conference games, while shooting 65.4 percent from the fi eld. However, the Lady Flames have fared well in the last fi ve games, shooting 73.8 percent from the charity stripe, including a season-best 88.2 percent versus Charleston Southern on Jan. 22. Avery Warley has keyed Liberty s resurgence at the line, making 11 of her last 12 attempts. She drained all four of her foul shots during the fi nal minute of Monday s contest versus Coastal Carolina. Brown s Roller Coaster Ride Devon Brown s scoring output has fl uctuated considerably in recent weeks. She tallied a then career-low eight points at UNC Asheville on Jan. 9, scored a season-best 27 points at Longwood on Jan. 14 and fi nished with a new career-low six points versus Radford on Jan. 17. For her career, however, Brown has been a consistent scorer for the Lady Flames. She has scored in double fi gures 39 times in 45 games, including 23 in a row at one point. Liberty Versus the Big South Conference Liberty has enjoyed a considerable amount of success versus Big South Conference opposition, since joining the league for the 1991-92 season. The Lady Flames have won the conference tournament 13 times and captured 11 regular-season championships. Liberty is 249-70 (.781) all-time against Big South opponents, including 209-64 in regular-season matchups and 39-6 in Big South Championship tilts. During Carey Green s tenure as head coach, the Lady Flames are 176-17 (.912) when facing Big South foes. Lady Flames Have Faced Wide Variety of Non-Conference Foes Liberty has matched up with opponents from 10 different conferences this season, including Atlantic-10 (La Salle), Big 12 (Baylor & Texas A&M), BIG EAST (St. John s), CAA (James Madison & VCU), CIAA (Virginia Union), MEAC (North Carolina Central), MVC (Creighton), Patriot (Lafayette), Southern (College of Charleston) and WVIAC (Glenville State) foes. Piling Up the Postseason Qualifiers Liberty is playing 11 games against teams which qualifi ed for postseason tournaments in 2009-10. The Lady Flames opponents this year include four NCAA Tournament qualifi ers (Baylor, James Madison, St. John s and Texas A&M), three WNIT qualifi ers (Creighton, Gardner-Webb and VCU) and two WBI qualifi ers (Charleston Southern and College of Charleston). The Lady Flames will host Charleston Southern on Jan. 24 and Gardner-Webb on Feb. 12. She is the longest-tenured assistant coach in program history, and has helped Liberty achieve considerable success. The Lady Flames have gone 185-59 during Stephens tenure, winning six Big South titles and making the Sweet 16 of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. However, Stephens has not been on the sideline since Liberty s 59-57 win at VCU on Dec. 21. She and husband Jesse had their fi rst child on Jan. 4. Matthew David Stephens was born at nine pounds, six ounces. Director of Operations Adam Deyo has temporarily stepped into Stephens coaching role, during her maternity leave. Deyo is also in his eighth season on Liberty s staff. International Flavor Sophomore Jelena Antic hails from Skopje, Macedonia and redshirt sophomore Tolu Omotola was born in London, England, giving Liberty international players on its roster for the 17th consecutive season. The last time the Lady Flames roster consisted solely of American-born players was the 1993-94 campaign. Every Carey Green-coached team at Liberty has featured at least one international player. Local Flavor Even though Jelena Antic was born in Macedonia, she played high school basketball at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Va. She is one of four current Lady Flames who attended high school within 70 miles of the Liberty campus, joining Kylee Beecher (Hidden Valley), Devon Brown (Waynesboro) and Brittany Campbell (Brookville). Lack of Overtime Since a 64-62 overtime setback at High Point on Jan. 20, 2007, the Lady Flames have played 130 consecutive games without needing extra time. No current Lady Flame has played an overtime contest in college. By way of comparison, the Liberty men s basketball team has played eight overtime games since the Lady Flames last overtime action. The Lady Flames most recent overtime victory came on Jan. 6, 2004, when Liberty defeated American, 76-72, on the road in double overtime. Liberty s most recent overtime contest at the Vines Center was a memorable one. The Lady Flames defeated Virginia, 77-69, in overtime on Nov. 26, 2002, to claim their fi rstever win over the Cavaliers. Breaking Down Brown Devon Brown enjoyed a remarkable second half Jan. 14 at Longwood, scoring 21 of her season-high 27 points during the fi nal 20 minutes of Liberty s 75-71 win. She scored 14 straight Liberty points over a span of 4:16 and notched the game s fi nal fi ve tallies, including a three-pointer with just 11.3 seconds left. The following are a few facts about her performance. -- No Lady Flame had scored 20 points in a game all season, before Brown scored 21 in the second half alone at Longwood. -- It was the most points in a half by a Liberty player since Nov. 25, 2007, when Megan Frazee tossed in 21 second-half points during a win at Xavier. -- Brown also fi nished the game with six rebounds and a career-high fi ve assists. She became Liberty s fi rst player with at least 25 points, fi ve rebounds and fi ve assists in the same game since Feb. 20, 1997. That day, Elena Kisseleva totaled 27 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists against UNC Greensboro. Painting a Masterpiece Liberty has outscored its opponent in the points in the paint category in eight straight games, by an average of 19.4 ppg. The Lady Flames are 7-1 during the span. Halfway There? Seven times during this season s fi rst 19 games, the team that was leading at halftime of the Lady Flames contest failed to win. Liberty is 9-5 when leading at the half and 2-3 when trailing after 20 minutes. Automatic From the Line Devon Brown has been Liberty s best free throw shooter this season. Despite missing the fi rst seven games of the season due to injury, the redshirt sophomore paces the team in free throw percentage (.784) and is second in free throws made (40). She had made 13 consecutive free throws, before a misfi re during the first half of the Radford game on Jan. 17. Dynamic Duo Since the ball dropped in Times Square and the calendar turned to 2011, Liberty s starting post duo of Tolu Omotola and Avery Warley have stepped up their play. They are combining for 22.6 ppg and 18.7 rpg during the Lady Flames last seven contests. Big on the Boards After a slow start to the season, Liberty has now outrebounded 13 consecutive opponents, by an average of 11.5 rebounds per contest. For the year, the Lady Flames own a Big South-best +9.8 rebound margin. Last season, Liberty fi nished the year with a +13.9 rebound margin, leading the nation for the third time in program history. This year, the Lady Flames currently sit No. 10 nationally. Spreading the Wealth Bench players Danika Dale and LaKendra Washington shared the team scoring lead for Liberty against No. 17/17 St. John s on Dec. 28, scoring 13 points apiece. Eight different Lady Flames have now led the team in scoring at least once this season. The Lady Flames were joined in the preseason Top 25 by fellow Big South Conference squad Gardner-Webb, which opened the year at No. 23. Two of Liberty s 2010-11 non-conference foes also appeared in the poll, with Creighton listed No. 20 and James Madison checking in at No. 3. Gonzaga, which advanced to the Sweet 16 of last year s NCAA Tournament, was ranked No. 1 to open the year, with Green Bay a close second. I Know What You Did Last Summer The Lady Flames had an eventful and enjoyable summer, highlighted by a trip to Israel spanning late May and early June. During the trip, Liberty competed in the international Friendship Games tournament and won the championship in dominating fashion. The Lady Flames went 5-0, winning their games by an average of 40.2 points per contest. Liberty defeated the Israel Under-20 National Team by an 82-58 count in the title game. Sophomore guard/forward Jelena Antic remained overseas while her teammates returned to the United States, and gained some additional international playing experience. Playing for Macedonia, Antic earned MVP honors in the U20 European Championship for Women Division B. For the tournament, Antic led all players in scoring (25.0 ppg) and rebounding (12.3 rpg), while ranking No. 2 in free throw percentage (.860), No. 3 in steals (3.2 spg), No. 5 in assists (3.3 apg) and No. 6 in blocked shots (1.2 bpg). Her top individual performance was a 25-point, 11-rebound, 7-assist outing versus tournament champion Great Britain on July 18.
