Fast Break Facts UMKC Mississippi State Series History Roos Shooting Well From Beyond the Arc UMKC and Mississippi State are tied 2-2 in the series history. Both teams are 2-0 on their respective home courts. Last season, the Roos earned a 72-67 victory over the Bulldogs on Dec. 12, 2015 at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. Shayok Shayok had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Roos. LaVell Boyd added nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. He finished 4-for-9 from the field and 1-for-4 from beyond the arc. Kyle Steward contributed nine points, three rebounds and two steals in last year's matchup. Roos Got Off to Best Start in 15 Years By starting 6-2, UMKC equaled its best start since the 2001-02 season. Those Roos began the year 5-0. That team finished 18-11 overall and 7-7 to finish fifth in the Mid-Continent Conference. UMKC started 7-4 for the second consecutive season, which mark the best starts for the program since the 2001-02 squad began 8-3. Richardson Ties Sundvold in Career Victories The Dec. 10 victory over William Jewell was the 43 rd for head coach Kareem Richardson, who is in his fourth season leading the Roos. He tied Bob Sundvold (1996-2000) for seventh-most coaching victories in program history, including the previous eras before moving to Division I in 1987-88. Richardson is 43-63 (.406) in 106 career games as the UMKC head coach. Darrell Corwin is UMKC's all-time victories leader with 118 from 1973-80 while competing as part of the NAIA. Richardson has the fourth-highest winning percentage (.406) among Roos head coaches during UMKC's Division I era. Among his most notable victories, Richardson has won at Missouri (69-61, 11/14/14) and vs. Mississippi State (72-67, 12/12/15). UMKC ranks 11 th nationally in 3-pointers (137) and 24 th in the country in 3-pointers per game (9.8). The Roos have attempted the 17 th -most triples (356) in the country. UMKC has drained at least 10 triples in seven contests, including six of the last 10 games. At South Dakota State on Dec. 3, UMKC drained a season-high 13 treys, including five each from LaVell Boyd and Isaiah Ross. Roos Post Best 3-Point Shooting Performance Since 2012 Against SEMO In the Nov. 28 victory over SEMO, UMKC shot 63.2 percent (12-for-19) from 3-point range for the game. The percentage marked the first time UMKC has shot over 60 percent from distance since shooting 62 percent (8-for-15) at New Mexico State on Jan. 14, 2016. It was the highest single-game 3-point shooting percentage for UMKC since posting the exact same 12-for-19 total vs. North Dakota State on Feb. 9, 2012. In that contest against the Bison, Reggie Chamberlain drained four triples while Kirk Korver knocked down three treys. Chamberlain finished with 27 points. UMKC Establishes Season-High Assist Total vs. SEMO In the Nov. 28 win against Southeast Missouri, the Roos dished out a seasonhigh 18 assists, led by seven dimes by LaVell Boyd. Boyd set a new career-high with eight assists the following game two days later vs. South Dakota. Boyd had four assists in the first half and three in the final 20 minutes in addition to scoring a game-high 24 points. He also set a career-high with 12 made free throws, completing a perfect night at the foul line. Freshman Xavier Bishop added a career-high four assists while senior Dashawn King finished with two, marking a new season-high. Balanced Attack Defeats Mid-Major Power Murray State In UMKC's 85-74 victory over Murray State on Nov. 20 in the Bill Frack Tournament hosted by Bowling Green, all 12 Roos that saw game action entered the scoring column. UMKC outscored the Racers 40-20 in bench points, led by seven points from Aleer Leek and Broderick Robinson. UMKC Signs Three High School Standouts UMKC recently announced the signings of three high school players - Brandon McKissic (St. Louis, Mo.), Marvin Nesbitt, Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) and DeMarco Smith (Kansas City, Kan.) - to National Letters of Intent. McKissic is a 6-2 guard from St. Louis University High School, where he is a two-time all-state performer. Nesbitt is a 6-4 guard/forward from Butler College Prep in Chicago. He was an honorable mention all-state selection in Illinois. Smith is a 6-1 guard and a local product from Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas. ALMA MATER: EVANSVILLE, 1997 UMKC RECORD: 43-65 (.398) CAREER RECORD: 43-65 (.398) Kareem Richardson was named the head coach at UMKC on March 19, 2013, becoming the sixth in the Division I era at UMKC. He enters his fourth season at the helm in 2016-17. The 2015-16 team started the season with their best nonconference performances since 2010-11, winning seven games, including a home victory over Mississippi State and against NCAA Tournament participant South Dakota State. Junior Martez Harrison was named second-team All-WAC, and continued to climb the charts, finishing the season ranked fourth all-time in scoring, second in assists and third in steals. Junior LaVell Boyd added a scoring punch to the lineup, being named to the WAC All-Newcomer Team, hitting 81 shots from beyond the arc. The Roos won a quarterfinal game for the second year in a row in the WAC Tournament, the first time since 2003 and 2004 that UMKC has done it in back to back seasons. His second season in Kansas City as the head man was another step in the right direction in 2014-15, and generated several program firsts. The 8-6 WAC record was the first above.500 at UMKC since 2005-06, and its second place finish matched the highest ever in league play. UMKC finished with a 6-1 WAC home record, the best in school history in conference play. The Roos picked up a win in the WAC Tournament, the first victory for UMKC in the postseason since 2007. The Roos also played 33 games, the most in school history. Martez Harrison was named an Associated Press honorable mention All-American. Harrison was also named the WAC Player of the Year, becoming the second UMKC player ever to win a conference player of the year award. In his first year with the Roos in 2013-14, Richardson led UMKC to a fifth place finish in the WAC, and the fourth seed in the conference tournament, both of which were the highest since 2006 at UMKC. Attendance increased 36 percent from the previous year, while overall winning percentage was an improvement from the last two years. Harrison, his first recruit at UMKC, was named WAC Freshman of the Year. The Kansas City product averaged 17.2 points per game and set numerous freshman records at UMKC. Prior to taking over in Kansas City, Richardson served as an assistant coach at Louisville in 2012-13 under legendary coach Rick Pitino. He played an integral role the Cardinals staff during their run to the National Championship, the NCAA Tournament No. 1 overall seed and BIG EAST tournament crown. Richardson also spent a season at UMKC in 2007-08 as an assistant. He has played and coached in the region, and has helped bring in highly-ranked recruiting classes at every school during his coaching career. Prior to his year at Louisville, Richardson made the most of one season at Xavier, helping the Musketeers reach the NCAA Sweet 16 and the finals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament while posting a 23-12 record. He was instrumental in the Musketeers 8 Game 15: Mississippi State

landing a Top 20 recruiting class in 2011. Richardson had joined Xavier after serving the head assistant coach at Drake for three seasons. He has also been a member of the coaching staffs at Evansville, Indiana State, Wright State and Indianapolis. Richardson has been ranked one of the top assistants in college basketball according to CollegeInsider.com. He earned a reputation as a top-level recruiter during his time at Drake, serving as recruiting coordinator and helping head coach Mark Phelps secure the top-rated recruited class in the Missouri Valley Conference in two of his three years in Des Moines. In his first year as assistant coach at Drake, Richardson helped lead the Bulldogs to postseason play in the inaugural CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2009. Prior to Drake, Richardson was the top assistant with UMKC during the 2007-08 campaign. Richardson served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Evansville, from 2003-07, at Wright State (2002-03), as well as a stint at Indiana State (1999-2002). His coaching career began as a graduate assistant at the University of Indianapolis from 1997-99. Richardson helped lead Indiana State to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the Larry Bird era in the late 1970s. A year later, Indiana State topped No. 4 seed Oklahoma to advance to the second round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. As a collegiate player, Richardson played in an NCAA Tournament as a freshman at East Carolina. He then transferred to Evansville in 1995 and quickly established himself as the starting point guard for the Purple Aces. He was voted a team captain for two years and was selected to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Academic Team in 1996 and 1997. In 1996, he received notoriety on the MVC All-Underrated Team. He was a first-team all-state selection at Rantoul (Ill.) Township High School in 1992 and was twice named conference player of the year. Richardson, who was born in Tacoma, Washington, graduated from Evansville with a bachelor s degree in Telecommunication and Interpersonal Communication in 1997 and received his MBA from the University of Indianapolis in 1999.
