Bonner eclipsed the 600 rebound mark in her junior campaign... After taking over eighth place, Bonner is now chasing the seventh spot needing 17 rebounds to take over the spot held by Catamount Hall of Fame member Laura Echols who ended her career with 790 (1998-02). The top spot will be a feat for Bonner as former Catamount great Brenda Johnson ended her career with 1,018 from 1974-77... GAME NOTES A SPANISH FLAIR: Junior transfer Judith Martin Ruiz is adding a little Spanish flavor to Western Carolina as she has really hit her stride in the last two games... She has scored a career-high 10 points in back-to-back games shooting 33.3 percent from the field and has connected on four three-pointers. Senior Julia Brown had a career night against Gardner-Webb pouring in a careerbest 17 points and also connecting on a career-high seven field goals... She has scored in double figures in back-to-back games for the first time this season after scoring 11 points against High Point. Sophomore Nikki Johnson followed teammate Julia Brown with a career night of her own against Gardner-Webb scoring 11 points... She scored nine of her 11 points in the second period of the game... Johnson also tied her career-high with two three-pointers and three made field goals. Sherae Bonner currently has 122 career blocks. She needs six blocks to move into third place. Western Carolina has led at the half in six of the first 13 games of the season... WCU went on to lose to Davidson, EKU, UT Martin, Campell. and Gardner-Webb The team held the lead against UNCA and Radford for the win. Western Carolina is currently on a fourgame losing streak and is still searching for a road win as the team is 0-8 on the road... Western Carolina s two wins this season have come at home. Western Carolina and Brevard meet for the 12th time in the two school s history and it is just the second meeting in the modern era... WCU is 11-0 against Brevard... The Catamounts met Brevard for the first time since 1974 when the two teams met in Cullowhee in 2015 with WCU winning 68-60... The game against Brevard is the first of two non- NCAA Division I teams the Catamounts face this season... WCU will also host Warren Wilson later in the season. Western Carolina plays its first New Years Eve game since 2014 when the Catamounts travel to Wake Forest falling 77-59... This is just the fifth time in school history Western Carolina is playing a New Years Eve game... WCU is currently 1-4 in New Years Eve games. Sherae Bonner has some work to do to reach 1,000 points before her career comes to an end. She has 786 career points and needs 214 to reach that plateau... Her 780 points rank 26th in the WCU career record books and she needs 26 points to move into 25th. She became the 11th Head Coach for Western Carolina women s basketball April 17, 2015. As a second-year head coach, McCormick helped guide Sherae Bonner to her best season as a Catamount in her junior campaign. For Bonner s efforts, she was named to the SoCon All-Conference third team. In her first season, McCormick helped produce a Southern Conference All-Freshman selection in Raziyah Farrington who ranked second on the team averaging 8.7 points per game. McCormick has served at five different institutions during her career including two stints as an assistant at Western Carolina. Her teams made nine postseason appearances with four apiece in both the NCAA Tournament and WNIT. She returns to Cullowhee after spending two years as an assistant coach at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. In her second year as an assistant at Siena, Mc- Cormick helped guide the Saints to a 22-13 overall record, advancing to the Women s Basketball Invitational (WBI) championship game. Siena s 22 wins this season were a 13-win improvement from the previous year, which was tied for the second-best turnaround in all of Division I women s basketball. Siena made its first national postseason tournament appearance in 12 years, and became the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school to win three games in a single postseason and advance to the championship game of a tournament. Prior to taking the position at Siena, McCormick spent nine years serving under Kellie Harper at both Western Carolina (2004-09) and North Carolina State (2009-13). During that time, she helped guide those schools to three NCAA Tournament and four WNIT berths. The Wolfpack made three postseason appearances during McCormick s four seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010. That season her recruiting efforts help land the 19th best recruiting class in the nation according to Blue Star Basketball, 28th by ESPN Hoop- Gurlz and 29th by Premier Scouting Service. McCormick, who began her coaching career at Western Carolina from 1994-97 as an assistant to head coach Gary Peters, helped guide the Catamounts to four postseason berths in her five seasons working on Harper s staff, including a pair of Southern Conference titles. She also oversaw the program s academic success which captured three WBCA Academic Top-25 awards in five seasons including the 2007-08 squad which ranked fifth nationally. Prior to her second stint at Western Carolina, McCormick made coaching stops at Georgia Tech (2003-04), Charlotte (2001-03) and UNC Wilmington (1997-01), serving as the associate head coach during her final three seasons with the Seahawks at the latter. She was the recruiting coordinator at both Georgia Tech and Charlotte, which boasted the No. 5 and No. 24 ranked recruiting classes in the country in 2004 and 2002 respectively according to the All Star Girls Report. A native of High Point, N.C., McCormick is a 1994 graduate of Catawba College. She holds her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and is a member of both the Women s Basketball Coaches Association and Black Coaches Association. The first player in school history to amass both 1,000 career points and rebounds, she holds Catawba s school record for both career (1,244) and single season rebounds (374).
