GOAL The intercollegiate athletics Cheerleading Team supports the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' primary mission of education, research and public service. UNLV's department of Intercollegiate Athletics measures success by how the program contributes to the overall development of the athlete as a student and as a good citizen. OBJECTIVES Facilitate academic success through scholarship opportunities Engage in various public service projects Provide leadership opportunities to diverse audiences Maintain a unified and respected cheer and dance program, which is recognized locally and nationally by offering an effective scholarship fund, implementing a physical fitness program, competing on a national level, and providing a qualified and committed staff. UNLV Cheer Program - Overview CHEER To lead the cheers; to raise the level of fan support for intercollegiate athletics; to lead in positive vocal support for the team; to solicit that support from UNLV fans and to project that support to the University and its teams. To participate in the athletic activity known as Cheerleading by performing gymnastic, partner stunts, motions, pyramids, dance movements; to perfect this athletic activity for keeping the crowd attention/direction focused on the field/floor where the intercollegiate activity is taking place, and for entertainment and competitive purposes. To serve as public relations ambassadors of intercollegiate athletics and the University; to uphold, reflect and project the goals and ideals of the University; to appear at University activities, functions and programs, at charitable and public causes to promote intercollegiate athletics and the University. In all matters and policies concerning cheer at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, it is required for each squad member to execute good citizenship and sportsmanship while representing UNLV. UNLV representatives and team members will conduct themselves in a proper manner (no violence, alcohol, drugs, narcotics, etc), and in accordance with all NCAA, Mountain West Conference and University rules and regulations. PURPOSE To lead the cheers; to raise the level of fan support for intercollegiate athletics To perform gymnastics, partner stunts, motions, pyramids, dance movements To serve as public relations ambassadors at university activities, functions, programs, charitable and public events The primary purpose of a cheerleader is to be a member of the team that supports the intercollegiate athletics and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

What to bring: 2 typed letters of recommendation from previous coaches, teachers, etc. Must include contact information. Admittance letter to UNLV or proof that you have applied to UNLV. Tryout Registration Form $40 tryout fee in money order or cashiers check made out to UNLV Board of Regents if sent in advance with application to: Nakia Jackson 4505 S Maryland Pkwy. Box 450001 Las Vegas, NV 89154-0001 $45 tryout fee in money order made out to UNLV Board of Regents or cash if paid the day of tryouts. REBELS Cheer Requirements: If an applicant is selected for the team, squad placement will be made initially. However, this placement is not permanent. Team members must keep up with the required skills throughout the summer. Standing Back Handspring Working on a Standing Back Tuck Jumps to Back Handspring Round Off Back handspring Working on a Round Off Back Handspring Tuck Tumbling has become a standard in the cheerleading community and UNLV is no exception. It is suggested that applicants trying out for cheer find a local gymnastics club to practice and learn the essentials. Assistant Coach Alex White 702-408-2747 Dancing and Motions To help you prepare for tryouts, private lessons are available by contacting: General Tryout Information: Tryouts are closed to the general public until 12:45pm on April 26th. The level of competition at tryouts is high. It is very important that you work out on a regular basis and are physically fit. What to wear: Half top/sports Bra Shorts Please wear red, black, white or gray. Cheer Shoes Hair-All Up with a bow Make Up with Lashes Academic Requirements: Maintain a 2.0 GPA Must be enrolled full time at UNLV (12 credits/semester) Eligibility is limited to 4 years All incoming freshman must attend 8 hours of study hall per week and the UNLV Champs program. Must be able to Stunt as a back spot, main base, secondary or flyer.

General information for participants that make the team: The report date will be August 4, 2014. Once you report back your only days off will be on Sundays. 2013-2014 FEES RETURNERS: $700.00 Members will be given approximately 14 days off over winter break due to the fact that 1/3 of the basketball games take place during this time and we start to prepare for Nationals. In addition, we may ask (depending on scheduling) for the team to not leave for the Thanksgiving break. Out of town team members - it is a great time for your family to come and visit Las Vegas Summer events will be required for all in town team members. New and returning members will be expected to pay a fee for uniforms, camp fees, and travel. NEW MEMBERS: $900.00 DVD Tryout Information For out of state participants or participants with special circumstances **All applicants are encouraged to tryout in person** DVD must be submitted to Nakia Jackson-Hale no later than May 1, 2014. Frequently Asked Questions Do you offer scholarships? Scholarships are available to members that have been on the team for one full year and are based on availability. How much time do we get off for Thanksgiving and Christmas? You will only be given approximately 14 days off during the winter break. This is due to the fact that 1/3 of the basketball games take place during this time and we start to prepare for Nationals. In addition, we may ask (depending on scheduling) for the team to not leave for the Thanksgiving break. What is required over the summer? We require that you continue to workout over the summer and maintain your skills. Skills checks will be assigned throughout the summer. What if I don t have all of the requirements? You are still encouraged to tryout. It is always a great experience and you will know what to expect the following year. Are we allowed to work? Yes as long as it does not conflict with our cheer schedule. What are the fees involved? Returning members have to pay $700.00 and new members have to pay $900.00. One third of this payment is due two weeks after tryouts. What sports do we cheer for? Football, Women s Basketball and Volleyball Do you travel? Yes, we do travel on occasion. 2014-2015 PRACTICE SCHEDULE Strength Training/ Conditioning Wednesday 6:30AM (Practices may be added from 6:00am-8:00am.
