PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (0-0) vs. CINCINNATI REDS (0-0) Monday, April 3, 2017 Great American Ball Park 4:10 p.m. EDT Game 1; Road 1 RHP Jeremy Hellickson (NR) vs. RHP Scott Feldman (NR) SEASON PREMIERE: The Phillies will embark on their 135th season (since 1883) this afternoon in Cincinnati, enduring as the oldest, continuous, one-nickname, one-city franchise in all of professional sports They are facing the Cincinnati Reds on Opening Day for the second consecutive season This marks the just the fourth time in Phillies history that they have faced the same opponent in the same ballpark on consecutive Opening Days, and only the second time it has happened on the road They opened in Chicago against the Cubs in 1989-90, and at home against the Boston Braves in both 1903-04 and 1941-42 From 1958 to 1963, the Phillies played the Reds in their season opener five out of six times The final two of those five meetings both came on April 9, and featured the exact same pitchers of record Art Mahaffey earned the win for the Phillies and Joey Jay took the loss for Cincinnati Today also marks the fifth time in the last six years that the Phillies will open the season on the road (L 6-2 at CIN in 2016; W 14-10 at TEX in 2014; L 7-5 at ATL in 2013; W 1-0 at PIT in 2012) From 2005-09, the Phillies hosted five straight season openers All-time, the Phillies are 60-72-2 on Opening Day. QUEEN FOR A DAY: For the ninth time in their storied franchise histories, the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds will do battle on Opening Day (the clubs are split 4-4 in their previous 8 meetings) When the Phillies take the field at Great American Ball Park today, it will mark the seventh time they have opened the season in Cincinnati The Reds hold a 4-2 lead in the previous six openers in the Queen City, having won each of the last three here (1981, 1986, 2016) The Phillies have not defeated the Reds on Opening Day since April 9, 1963 at Connie Mack Stadium (2-1), while their last Opening Day road victory in Cincinnati came on April 9, 1962 at Crosley Field (12-4).
