COLUM S COLUMN Upcoming Events from Vice Commodore Bob Colum Well, happy May! The Club opening events have started and it s obvious that members are excited! My column this month is dedicated to our new, younger members. I must comment that it warms my heart to see several new, younger members who have sailed or swam at our Club and have now returned to join as full members. I see that as a testament to how successful our Club heritage and junior programs at MYC have been in the past. Some of these new members have actually sailed or swam with and mentored our own children. I want to relate an experience that occurred last Saturday night. Trish and I decided to attend Saturday happy hour (for member research purposes, of course). While there, we saw a large table of young members and their guests. They were all having a great time together and the group included four, really, really young members. It was amazing to see these one and two-year olds with their families, and quite frankly, the flashbacks began. I said to Doug Jones, PC (who was also doing member research) that is a future class of Optimist sailors. In retrospect, that group of four could soon fill the pool lanes at a swim meet. If I may speak for the Officers, we believe that the future of MYC is the successful interaction of our senior members with the new members. There is so much knowledge and history that we need to transition (or download), to the youngins. We all relive our past family memories and hopefully much of it can be about sailing, boating, swimming and fishing. Most importantly, it is all about the fun that a family paints their memories, in our case, using water as the canvas. I am confident that MYC can provide another rewarding experience and your Officers and Board are dedicated to making sure that happens. But I must say to the youngins, it is worth the wait, you will see. Bob Colum Vice Commodore From The Editor Welcome to a special expanded edition of The Rudder! The Club has so much to offer this season, I ve had to double the size of this issue, to 16 pages from its usual 8 pages! I hope you enjoy this edition as much as I have putting it together. Remember, your comments and suggestions are always welcome at rudder@milfordyachtclub.com. Your Humble Rudder Editor, Mrs. Silence Dogood 3 3

SAVE THE DATE Upcoming MYC Events South Seas Luau Party! All Member Event Brewer Pilot s Point Marina, Westbrook, Conn. Save the Date Saturday, August 18th Held in conjunction with the 2018 MYC Club Cruise & Rendezvous August 17th through 19th Milford Yacht Club s 10th Annual Blessing of the Fleet Sunday, June 17 th, 2018 It s that time of the year again Summer is in the air, boats are in the water. Tradition says that participation in the Blessing of the Fleet ritual will assure cruisers of fair weather and safe passage, and racers of success on the race course. Others say this is mere superstition, but why take chances? Come join us on Sunday, June 17th at 1500 hours. Our Blessing of the Fleet ritual is intended to safeguard our boaters, crew, guests, and vessels from the danger of the seas through a blessing given by our local clergymen, and subsequent officiating at the water s edge as the boats parade by. Special note, based on feedback from the event in 2017, the hose will be returning! This event is opened to the entire community. This time-honored tradition begins at 3:00pm with opening remarks. The procession of boats begins at 4:00pm. The celebration continues until 8:00pm. The Milford Concert Band will provide musical entertainment. If you are interested in joining the team that organizes this special event, contact Doug Jones, PC (douglasjones49@gmail.com) 10

FUN AND GAMES It s All Fun and Games Until Someone Loses an Aye Milford Yacht Club House Rules House rules exist for the safety and enjoyment of all of our members and it s vitally important that all members be aware of them and abide by them. Some of the biggies, of course, include making sure you sign in all guests at the clubhouse and the pool (per the Connecticut Liquor Commission), the use of ditto marks in the guest book is not allowed (unless, of course, your guest is named Mark Ditto, and it s last name first), and children are not allowed into the Commodore s Lounge unless accompanied by and supervised by a parent or guardian. We thought we d have a little fun to help you familiarize yourself with our house rules in a crossword puzzle. For those cheaters out there, the House Rules start on page 60 of the 2017 MYC Yearbook. Have fun! For an answer key, email rudder@milfordyachtclub.com 11

OFF THE DOCKS AND ON THE GROUNDS Junior Sailing News JUNIOR SAILING REGATTAS THIS SUMMER! Milford Yacht Club is hosting two regattas for the Junior Sailing Association this summer. Our annual Green Fleet Optimist Regatta has taken place at MYC for years. The term Green Fleet refers to beginner sailors, usually between the ages of 7 and 9. Different from any other fleet, Green Fleet sailors have the privilege of having coaches provide them with instruction during the race. Although we call it the Green Fleet Regatta, we host White Fleet, Blue Fleet and Red Fleet for older, more experienced sailors as well. Last year, we used inflatable animal floats as marks rather than the usual big orange marks, to keep our younger sailors smiling out on the water. This summer, look for our Optimist Regatta on July 25th! In addition to our Green Fleet Optimist Regatta, we are hosting a new Laser Radial, Feva and Pixel Regatta on July 2nd. We hope this will become a new annual tradition to attract sailors and their families from around Long Island Sound to our yacht club. Unlike the annual Larchmont Race Week, the new MYC regatta will be a one-day event. More information to follow! ~ Nico Clayton MYC Council of Junior Sailors The Milford Yacht Club Junior Sailing program has recently formed a council of junior sailors and instructors to help better the MYC Junior Sailing program. There are five Laser sailors and two Opti sailors on the Council. All the members of the Council are also JIs, or junior instructors. This means that they are afternoon sailors who help out with the morning program. Walter Erenhouse was recently named Head JI. This Council exists to help better the Milford Yacht Club Junior Sailing program. The body meets monthly to plan and develop different ideas and activities for the program. Some of the planned activities this summer are a field trip to Brownstone, an outdoor water park in Connecticut, a day trip to Port Jefferson, New York, and a Laser/Pixel/Feva regatta at MYC. We also are going to be starting Ideal 18/J-22 racing with Black Rock Yacht Club. We want to make the program the most enjoyable it can be for the young sailors. To encourage interaction and friendship between the senior and junior members of the program, we are developing a buddy system to pair up older and younger sailors. Our goal is to cultivate a love of sailing in the youngest sailors in the program. We want to the junior sailing program to continue and to be strengthened. We want people to enjoy sailing and have fun. The Junior Sailing program is one of MYC s most important legacies, and we want to make sure that it continues to instill of love of sailing in our young sailors. ~ Caroline Begg 13

Contact Audrey Baston (203) 874-1719 for more information SOS! (Summer of Sailing) This is the Milford Yacht Club program of adult sailing instruction geared to those who would like to try sailing but that have little or no experience. Some students become avid sailors. Others just want to try going out on a sailboat without feeling like they are the only beginner aboard. The goal is to have fun on the water while learning some of the basic skills. The students sail with an experienced sailor on the Milford Sailing Foundation J-22s. Students should know how to swim and need only have a PFD (life jacket) and appropriate clothing. We meet Wednesday evenings at 6:00 for six sessions starting June 20th. We will skip the week of July 4 th and the day of the Opti Regatta (July 25th) and finish August 8th. In case of adverse weather conditions, we may offer land-based instruction. There is no requirement to be present for every session. The fee for the instruction and use of the boats is $150 for the six lessons course. Students who demonstrate proficiency may charter the J-22 s in the future. The rate is $30 per day if you launch and retrieve the boat. For an additional $50, the dock staff will launch and retrieve the boat, schedule permitting. For more information about this exciting program, contact Fleet Captain Bob Farnum at fleetcaptain@milfordyachtclub.com 6 14
