LOS ANGELES DODGERS (16-24) at Miami Marlins (14-26) LHP Alex Wood (0-3, 3.60) vs. LHP Wei-Yin Chen (1-2, 10.22) Tuesday, May 15, 2018 4:10 p.m PST Marlins Park Miami, FL Game 41 Road Game 20 (8-11) Night Game 30 (12-17) TV: SNLA/SNLA Spanish Radio: AM 570 (English); KTNQ 1020 AM (Spanish) TURN THE PAGE: After going 1-5 in their six-game homestand against the Diamondbacks (1-1) and the Reds (0-4) last week, the Dodgers look to get back on track as they begin their six-game road trip with the first of the a three-game matchup against the Marlins tonight. Los Angeles, which was swept for the second time this season in their last series against Cincinnati, has lost seven of its last eight games since May 5. Following their three-game set in Miami, the Boys in Blue will travel to the nation s capital to take on the Nationals for a three-game weekend series. The Dodgers dropped the series against the Marlins in Los Angeles, 1-2, from April 24-26, including losing the last two games. Despite the skid, Los Angeles has come up victorious in five of its last seven games against the Fish since May 18, 2017 and are 12-7 since Marlins Park opened in 2012. The last time the Dodgers started the season going 16-24 or worse in their first 40 games of the year was the club s inaugural season in Los Angeles in 1958, going 15-25. According to Stats LLC., there have been two teams in Major League history to have started a season 16-24 or worse through 40 games and still advanced to the World Series; the 1914 Boston Braves (12-28, defeated Philadelphia A s in World Series) and the 2005 Houston Astros (15-25, lost to White Sox in WS). THE RETURN: Prior to tonight s contest, the Dodgers reinstated All-Star third baseman Justin Turner and infielder Logan Forsythe from the disabled list. Turner, who will make his season debut tonight, appeared in two rehab games with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga going 0-for-6 with a walk, while Forsythe went 1-for-10 with a double in three games with the Quakes. Forsythe was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation on April 15, while Turner was placed on the disabled list on March 26 with a left wrist fracture after being hit by a pitch during a Spring Training game on March 19. Prior to being placed on the disabled list, Forsythe went 8- for-46 (.174) with two runs, two doubles, one home run and four RBI in 12 games with Los Angeles. Turner, who earned his first All-Star selection last season via the MLB s Final Vote, posted a.322/.415/.530 slashline with 72 runs, 32 doubles, 21 home runs and 71 RBI in 130 games in 2017. He finished third in the NL in batting average (5th, ML), while also ranking second in on-base percentage (4th, ML) and eighth in OPS (.945). Prior to the return of Turner at the hot corner, Dodger third basemen, who tried to replace the All-Star, have not produced much offensively, according to Stats LLC.: Dodgers, Combined Stats by 3rd Basemen - 2018 MLB Rk NL Rk AVG.209 28th 13th OBP.291 27th 13th SLG.374 29th 14th OPS.665 29th 14th Runs 10 Last Last To create room on the active roster, the Dodgers optioned INF/C Kyle Farmer and INF/OF Tim Locastro to Triple- A Oklahoma City. FINDING THE STRIKE ZONE: The Dodgers 396 strikeouts, 9.70 strikeouts per nine innings and 3.02 strikeout-to-walk ratio as a pitching staff rank second in the National League, trailing only the Nationals 422 punchouts, 10.02 strikeouts per nine and 3.52 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Dodger starters also rank among the best in the Senior Circuit in strikeouts (236, 3rd), strikeouts per nine innings (9.94, 2nd) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.69, 2nd). They also are tied with Phillies starters for the fewest walks allowed with just 64 free passes. Wood last pitched on May 9 against the Diamondbacks, allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts over 5.0 innings as he did not factor in the decision. Despite the 0-3 record, Wood has been solid this season posting a 3.60 ERA (18 ER/45.0 IP) and striking out 42 batters against just eight walks, while also holding hitters to a.219 average. The southpaw also holds a 1.00 WHIP, which currently ranks fifth best in the National League trailing just Max Scherzer (0.82), Patrick Corbin (0.86), Miles Mikolas (0.96) and Aaron Nola (0.99). Wood has pitched well against the Marlins throughout his career, going 6-3 with a 2.73 ERA (20 ER/66.0 IP) in 13 games (10 starts). He has held Miami hitters to a.236 average, while striking out 56 batters against 14 walks and posting a 1.09 WHIP. In his last seven games (six starts) against the Fish, Wood has gone 6-0 with a 1.08 ERA (5 ER/41.2 IP) and has limited the opposition to a.211 average. In 17 career starts in May, Wood sports a 2.42 earned run average, the lowest ERA in May by any active starting pitcher (minimum 15 starts). Chase Utley has been very reliable when being called upon off the bench, as he has recorded seven hits as pinch-hitter this season, which is tied for the second most in the big leagues with the Phillies Nick Williams and trailing just the Cubs Tommy La Stella for the lead (8). His.583 batting average (7-for-12) as a pinch-hitter ranks second in the Majors, while his five RBI is the fourth most in the bigs. Among active players, Utley has played the most games, has driven in the most runs and has drew the most walks (80, 1st) against the Marlins, while ranking second in home runs and third in hits (188) and runs (114). Not to go unnoticed, but Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp has also seen success against the Marlins throughout his career, posting a.295/.360/.455 slashline with 42 runs, 12 doubles, 10 home runs, 31 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 71 games.
