Issue 1, May 2012 2012 saw Seane Stone pass the Presidency of SWTCC over to Mark Huitenga. The club would like to thank Seane for all the hard work he put in while President (and his silent partner Deb) and look forward to his continued involvement on the Committee and displays on the track. Mark Huitenga, for those who haven't met him, is the man behind the green mini at Motorkhana and the grey RX7 at Autocross. He has been a member of SWTCC for 3 years but has been involved in rallying since back in the days when the Blue and White Car Club (that s now us, the SWTCC) was formed (waaayyyy back in the 70 s!!). The track prep for 2012 has involved the annual replacing of tyres and fence and grading of the track (another awesome job by Garry Butler and Brett Andrijasevich), and a few other projects the Committee has had in the pipeline. We are lucky to continue having the pleasure of Lennie commentating for us again this year and we thought it was time we gave Lennie somewhere at the track to call home, so a building crew including Mal Thompson, Ron Ferguson, Bec Lathwell and Lennie built a commentators hut to be envied especially by those who stand out in the rain! Another project we have tackled is the new flaggies hut (another building crew this time, Rod Barrett, Ron Ferguson and Brendan Quartermaine). This is the hut on the hill, and it not only shelters the lucky flaggies but is connected to a red light warning system that can be triggered when the run needs to be stopped. We don t expect too much trouble getting flaggies for this new hut as they will have the best view of the track AND be out of the weather. Another change you will have noticed is the new spectator area, on the bank in front of the pits. Hopefully you will enjoy being close to the action and still be able to be near the pits. This change has been possible by us moving the track exit to be near to the track entrance (it also gives those drivers not happy with their run more time to cool off before entering the pits!). It hasn t been all work, we have also managed to have a Khanacross and a Motorkhana. There wasn t much notice for the Khanacross but we still had 18 drivers, 4 of which were juniors. Many of our club members are relatively new to motorsport and this was their first Khanacross and they all had a ball (especially Team Carnage, who produced some great footage which they put up on YouTube and you ll find the link to on Page 8). We look forward to another great year and hope you enjoy the season. Yes, to those of you used to coming down the hill near the timing hut the car on the right IS going up the hill. There were 4 different courses and the track certainly drives differently when that happens! Newsletter of the South West Touring Car Club Khanacross 13th May 2012 Volunteers Award $25 Fuel Voucher Our events couldn t happen without volunteers and SWTCC would like to recognise event volunteers by providing two $25 fuel vouchers. All volunteers need to sign on at the registration desk this gets them entered in the draw for the fuel voucher and also gives them insurance cover in the event of an accident. How good is that, you get to contribute to your sport, have heaps of fun and maybe even win something! on and we KNOW you ll have fun! These businesses support the SWTCC.. Please support them! www.swtcc.com.au

Quit Forest Rally an eventful day but Carl s face tells it all they had a ball! Well, we finally got there! On the 31 st of March Carl and I competed in our first ever rally. My main concern about being in the navigator seat was being car sick; as I have heard many people (even drivers) have been, but fortunately that was not a problem. My other concern was getting scared sitting in the passenger seat without any control, but as usual when sitting next to Carl, that also was not a concern. I wasn t the least bit frightened, thank goodness. We had not had much time in the car together, so it was a huge learning experience to begin with, the car was all new and we were new at it. We had been to the navigator course, and got a lot from that but until you actually do it it s all a bit confusing especially the time card. We did book in late on one stage and I got us a 5 second penalty. And on another stage I sent us out on the wrong highway, in the wrong direction, so it was a mad rush to get to the stage on time (without speeding of course) and we just made it. We both got a little flustered I think, and tensions were high as we got back to the service park. Unfortunately, we did not manage to finish our first rally and had to be spectators for a short time. But, we had an absolutely awesome time, we learnt so much and best of all we were competitive, so with that in mind we can t wait for the next event. Which by the way is on the 19 th of May, in Donnelly River and as always they are looking for road closure officials. We think that is the best way to spend quality family time together and see some of the best action at the same time. So for anyone wanting to step up to the rally scene, or just see what goes on that s a great place to start. Oh, and it was such a buzz seeing ourselves on you tube, Photos courtesy of Pat Rattenbury Regards Tracey Rattenbury

Motorkhana, April 15th, 2012 Our first motorkhana of the year went well. We re ready, who s eating? First of all I would like to give a big thank you to members old and new for their help in running the event, you guys are the foundation of club events, nothing can take place without all the tasks that have to be carried out prior to a wheel being turned, being undertaken by someone. Yours truly got to the gate at 7.45 to be greeted with a line of competitors all ready for the day. Busy with Admin... Question 1 on the day who s got the key to the gate. Collective answer not me Just them Graeme arrive got the key was the collective cry no came the answer, I lent mine to??????, then came hurried phone calls, to which there was no reply ( at this point, I m hoping that no reply meant that someone with the key was on their way). Enter Ron with a key, must be said at this point that a hacksaw had been found as last resort. We all filed through the gate and the well oiled machine of SWTCC motorkhana set up sprang into action, the water cart arrived, the shade put up, the food van put into place, I know I went wrong somewhere but where?? Rocky arrived with the timing gear, question 2 for the day, where s the marker trailer? Now I remember what it was I couldn t think of yesterday said I a bit sheepishly, as I got into my trusty ute, and shot off like a flash down to the Miles place to retrieve the trailer and its load of equipment. Nothin like an ol V8 playin in the dirt... By 10 the track was marked out, and the drivers brief over and we were ready for some fun on the gravel. To those of you who have not experienced a Motorkana you don t know what you are missing, make a date for the next one and have a go! We had 6 tests, some old favourites, and some that don t get to see the light of day often. Everyone had a good time, a few navigators will have to brush up on their skills for the next event, but generally everyone found their way around the track, with some excellent driving skills on display. After the event, that well oiled SWTCC machine sprung back to life, and all the equipment was returned to storage, the car park was levelled and the day was all too quickly over. We can all look forward to the glorious 27 th May and our first Autocross of the year. 2012 Busy Bee and Track Preparation 24th March Fences and tyres were soon put in place with the help of the green monster and a band of very willing helpers. Ahh, now that s better... Lennie s wonderful new home away from home was put in place, ready for the next stage (it looks a bit too draughty as it is!). April Once the fence and tyres were in place Garry and Brett were able to come down and start the prep work on the actual track. May Final track preparations including putting up the fence fore the new spectator area, setting up the lights and the new flaggies hut on the hill put in place Three very wise monkeys sorting out the wiring after a little hiccup with the power supply!

MY YEAR IN MOTORSPORT 2011 BETHWYN HASTIE CAMS Training Have you ever thought about becoming a CAMS official? It s easier than you think. Many of you will have volunteered at events in the past as a flaggie or starter. If you have, then you are on the road to becoming an official. Why would you want to - because it s fun! It s a great way to get more involved in motorsport and not only is all the training free but you get the opportunity to officiate at CAMS events around Australia and even overseas if you are interested. It s easy to start on the road to being a CAMS official, speak to Brian Jarvis (Event Secretary) or any of the committee members and they will help you. Once you have been signed off for your first event you are ready for the online module (open book and only thirteen questions to answer) theory assessment. You get three attempts, and there is no time limit - it s as easy as that. Rosco one of our band of trusty volunteers who helps make the events happen.
