CLAY COUNTY, SD 4-H GUIDELINES February 2019 A NOTE FROM LAUREN Head, Heart, Hands, Health February is the month of Valen ne s Day and is also American Heart Month. We can use our Heart in 4 H by caring about others 4 H is about belonging and being part of a group. Youth need to know they are cared about by others and feel a part of the group. Your club can help by making members feel they are a part of the group by having ac vi es and ice breaker ac vi es, crea ng a welcoming environment for families, and providing opportuni es for youth to interact with each other through 4 H projects and ac vi es. If you have new 4 H families, know of families or friends who might be interested in 4 H, or just want more informa on about what Clay County 4 H is about, make sure to check out our Welcome to 4 H Event. NATIONAL 4 H CONFERENCE Congratula ons to Nicole Hauck for being one of the four 4 H members chosen from South Dakota to a end the 2019 Na onal 4 H Conference April 6 11 in Chevy Chase, MD. Na onal 4 H Conference is the pinnacle experience in 4 H Civic Engagement, providing the opportunity for young people to connect, learn, engage, lead and impact their communi es, their na on and their world. We look forward to hearing from Nicole a er her trip. 4 H FRUIT SALE FUNDRAISER All members should have received their fruit informa on by now. If you haven t, it s probably because you weren t enrolled or re enrolled at the me the informa on was sent out. Call or email the office if you would like the informa on sent to you. Members need to have their orders called in to their club leaders by February 20. Leaders please have your club totals to Colleen by 5 pm on Friday, February 22. COUNTY 4 H T SHIRT CONTEST It s me to start thinking about the crea ve and original design you want to enter in the county 4 H t shirt contest for 2019. Entries are due in the office by 5 pm on Wednesday, March 13. See flyer with this newsle er. JUNIOR AMBASSADORS The Ambassador s will meet on Sunday, February 3 at 3:00 pm for a quick catch up mee ng and planning for the Welcome to 4 H Event later in the month. We also need to decide a couple things for the fair schedule so that the fair board can start to finalize the schedule.

STATE FAIR HORTICULTURE SKILLATON CONTEST We wanted to let you know what areas will be focused on at the State Fair this year. Juniors will be tested on Greenhouse Structures and Turf. Seniors will be tested on Landscaping and Environment & Hor culture Plants. Here is a brief breakdown of the contest. This will be in the State Fair Handbook as well. Beginners: One class vegetable judging, one class fruit judging, one class vegetable ID (edible parts only) and one class (wri en test) from the Beginner Plant Parts Study Guide and Your Vegetable Garden Study Guide. Juniors: One class vegetable judging, one class fruit judging, one class flowers/indoor plants judging, one class (wri en test) from the Junior/Senior Plants Parts Study Guide, one class from NJHA study guides (wri en test) for 2019 Greenhouse Structures and Turf, one class vegetable ID (edible and/or seed por ons), one class fruit, nuts and berries ID (edible and/or seed por ons and one class landscape ornamentals ID (foliage only).
