They practice a max of 20 hours per week, receive gear and uniforms., and get all-expenses-paid travel opportunities with teams. Seasons go from February to April and have 6-10 meets. If you ask any parent about what they think are essential qualities that kids growing up should be taught, probably the majority will say that near the top of the list is building excellent character. At Excite!, we understand this and try our best everyday to implement good-character building techniques into our programs across the board. Our preschool gymnastics program is no exception. We put a lot of care and effort into making sure young, impressionable minds are taught the best practices while growing as individuals. We also understand that we can also have some serious fun in the process! Here are 7 areas that we highlight in our preschool gymnastics program that make them worth considering: Gymnastics is all about using the body. From picking up small objects on the floor (fine motor-skills), to rolling and tumbling around on the floor (gross motor-skills), our preschool warm-ups and games are designed to teach and develop these skills. Recent studies have shown that kids who learn and refine their motor skills early in childhood also show an increase in the rate of their cognitive development including language learning! Following instructions is important for functioning effectively across many different environments; like home, kindergarten, or going over to a friend s house. We use gymnastics to teach kids how to follow multi-step directions as they go around obstacle courses. Additionally, having to remember what to do at each station is all about information processing and recall all of which helps further cognitive development. Listening and understanding rules and boundaries doesn t only help kids stay safe in the gym, but also teaches them how to prepare for the real world. Providing a framework with understood consequences for going against rules helps kids know what is expected of them and the potential dangers of breaking rules. This also helps reassure kids in their own behavior, and provides a sense of order and belonging. It s a virtue that s difficult for even adults to master, but a skill necessary to be mature. Having kids practice standing in line or containing their excitement helps them learn the value of delaying gratification - and in a world of smartphones and streaming services, that s something increasingly invaluable! Having kids put away their stars or game equipment after themselves is our way of instilling a sense of responsibility in our students. With clear and positive instructions, we try to teach children about decision making and cooperation in an environment outside the home. Learning how to cope with separation from a caregiver helps kids develop independence and foster a sense of self. Just by even leaving their caregiver in the lobby and going to class solo is the beginning of how they can learn to separate. This can ease something more monumental, like going to school for the first time. Gymnastics is a sport that pushes us out of our comfort zone. By allowing kids to conquer difficult, new experiences, our gymnastics program lets kids recognize and cope with feeling of fear, apprehension, or anxiety in a positive way. Developing courage when faced with new obstacles also helps kids in all other aspects of their childhood, like attending a new school or making friends!
