Pioneer Gymnastics Season Preview 2014 Year in and year out, the Pioneer women's gymnastics team has several goals inside the gym - but the qualities of character, excellence and teamwork are always part of the Pioneer tradition. With the addition of the three freshmen, Leah Lomonte (NIT champion in 2012 and 11th in the JO National Championships), Rachel Fielitz (former JO vault champion) and Julia Ross (3rd place in the nation on the beam), the Pioneers are looking forward to another recordbreaking season. With only four home meets, there aren't many chances to show Denver the skills that the Pioneers have. Last season, the team had two sell-outs with one other meet just 71 seats short. "I m really looking forward to this season," said Head Coach Melissa Kutcher- Rinehart. "Their energy and enthusiasm are contagious. They have a high skill CALLING ALL ALUMNI: level and have a great chemistry, character and work ethic." Some of the teams that the Pioneers will face are Georgia, a perennial powerhouse, Boise State, a western rival, and California. "We don't focus on one particular team - because it is not about wins and losses, it's about team scores," Kutcher- Rinehart explained. "We can't control how the other teams perform, but we can control how we perform and how we stay within ourselves. We need to improve every meet and be ready for postseason as well as the new league championship." Recently, the University of Denver gymnastics team announced the joining of a new gymnastics affiliation with Utah State, Southern Utah University, Boise State and Brigham Young in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Championship. They hope to become the Mountains Rim Gymnastics Conference next year, as long as the league is recognized by the NCAA. The first Alumni competition will be on Friday from 6-7 at the Gates Fieldhouse. Come and show off your slightly rusty skills or enjoy the faces from the past showing off their skills. The gym will be open after the competition for fun. See attached flyer. The annual alumni meet is this Saturday. Please come and support the 2014 team and be feted by the current Pioneers. For more information, please contact Carl Leland. Notes from the floor Follow the Pioneers on Facebook www.facebook. com/denvergym nastics Twitter @DU_Gymnastics Instagram DU_Gymnastics There are only FOUR home meets this season. Last season there were two sell-outs (71 tickets short of the third shutout). Let s sell all four out this year! Join the kids Club or 10.0 club.

One of the best indicators of the success of any collegiate sports program is the graduation rate and the post-collegiate success of its student-athletes. In that respect, the University of Denver and its gymnastics program specifically rank very highly. Half the 2013 squad were Scholastic All- Americans, which is about the average for the past 15 years. Head Coach Melissa Kutcher- Rinehart has had 107 NACWC/W Scholastic All- Americans. In the most recent data available for graduation rates (freshman class of 2006), the gymnastics team has graduated 100% of its athletes. The rest of the University has graduated 91% of athletes. The gymnastics team ranks number one with its graduation rate along with several other teams. Sasha Sullivan is one of those athletes. She was a Scholastic All- American in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Upon graduating with a degree in Marketing, she was hired by Accenture as a Management Consultant. As a consultant, she works with client companies to identify business process issues, works on change to improve their operations and more. "Dedication, perseverance, teamwork and attention to detail were key skills I developed while competing in gymnastics, which translated into invaluable qualities that I now use on a daily basis in the 'real world', explained Sullivan. "Perseverance is the key to accomplishing your goals," she continued. "Despite a bad day at practice or a bad meet, you should always come back into the gym the next day with a positive attitude and determined to improve; with the right attitude you will get stronger, better and eventually achieve success." Alumnae Profile Sasha Sullivan Sullivan proved that this mentality does achieve success. In her freshman season, she led the team in average on both uneven bars (9.702) and floor exercise (9.877) on her way to 12 event titles, seven on floor exercise and five on balance beam. She set season-highs on bars and balance beam in the same meet, a 9.775 on bars and a 9.875 on balance beam and had a career-high floor routine at 9.95. Her second season, she led the team on floor seven times and finished with a perfect 100 percent count rate. Sullivan had just one floor score under a 9.825 all season and recorded three scores of 9.9. Sullivan continued her consistency as the only DU gymnast to post 100 percent count rate on floor in the 2007 season. She won seven floor titles on the season, including six in a row as well as two all-around titles. In the 2007 Nationals, Sullivan posted a 9.725 on the vault and a 9.825 on the floor exercise. In her final campaign, she completed her gymnastics career with career highs of 39.325 in the allaround, 9.875 on beam and 9.95 on the floor, including a second trip to Nationals, where she scored a 38.9 in the All-Around. Sullivan's advice to the 2014 team is "enjoy your college years as much as possible and live in the moment." She also has three pieces of advice for the team. 1. Network: It is important to network as you begin your career. Introduce yourself to people who work in an industry that you like. Talk to people who have jobs that you re interested in learning more about do coffee with them, have your questions ready, learn what a day in the life looks like. 2. Be an Intern: Get an internship before you graduate college. Obtaining professional experience will be invaluable and look great on your resume. 3. Be passionate: Choose a job or career that you truly enjoy and are passionate about. Kutcher- Rinehart cannot say enough about Sullivan and her success as a Pioneer and as a businesswoman. "Sasha is an amazing role model for our student-athletes. Her success in and out of the gym is what we as coaches want to see from out former athletes. She has a great career and I am proud to have coached her and to have watched her grow into the wonderful woman that she is." Sullivan is unable to make this year s Alumni Meet, but hopes to come to future meets. Page 2 Pioneer Gymnastics

Judging Questions Answered and Score Updates To most gymnastics fans, judging is completely subjective and mysterious. What are the judges really looking for? What are the rule changes for the upcoming season? How do judges score and how can they keep track of all the skills? Priscilla K. Hickey, one of the foremost gymnastics judges and educators, was kind enough to answer a few questions about this area. Hickey explained that judges use shorthand for each element, for example "X" means a cartwheel, as well as the value of the element - from A to E. Deductions are grouped from small (0.05) to a fall (0.5), which is a large deduction. There is also a schedule of "Connection of Elements", which is calculated according to the event's formulas - for example a D (back giant full turn) plus D (major release) = +0.2 connection value bonus. At the end of the routine the judge will: Calculate the Start Value (9.50 for Requirements+ 0.5 maximum for BONUS). Deduct missing Value Part Elements (3-A s, 3-B s, 2-C s) Deduct missing Special Requirements (each worth 0.20) Deduct insufficient Compositional Requirements (choice of elements, etc.) Deduct for Execution and Amplitude errors (falls, steps, bent legs, etc.). Deduct for Lack of Artistry (Beam & Floor). The changes for the 2014 season can be summarized as follows: Beam: Acrobatic Series Requirement (two flight elements minimum one C element) must END on the Beam and may not be used in the dismount series for the choice of elements compositional requirements. Previously, this requirement could lead into the dismount. (Compositional Deduction 0.1). In addition an "E" dance element may be used for the compositional requirement for Choice of Elements. There is now a bonus for Connection Value (CV) which includes an Additional +0.1 for a connection of at least 3 Acrobatic Flight elements with a minimum of one C element (excluding the dismount). For example: back handspring (B), back handspring (B), back layout salto (D) will receive an Additional +0.1 Bonus CV. Floor: if a routine only has two tumbling passes, the compositional requirement for Choice of Elements is now a minimum of a D element in one pass, and a minimum of a D element OR +0.2 Connection Value (CV) in the 2 nd pass. For example; Pass 1: Roundoff, Back Handspring Double Back Salto (D) and Pass 2: front handspring, Front Layout (B), Front Layout 1-1/2 Twist (D) would fulfill the requirement. Judges are only allowed to judge two home and two away meets for a team, so most judges travel a lot to judge collegiate meets. Hickey also explained that judges have to recertify every four years. Most judges have between 10-40 years of experience and have spent countless hours studying to judge this high level of competition. A sample score sheet is attached. Way of the Peaceful Warrior has so many deep messages and metaphors about life. The novel is told from the perspective of Dan Millman, who retells his experiences in college. Dan is an Olympic hopeful training in California. He seems to have a great life he is an amazing athlete and has a promising future, but there seems to be a void in his soul. Dan is just going through the motions of his daily routine and struggles to find long-lasting happiness. In the beginning of the novel, Dan Millman comes across a peculiar man at a gas station. Dan nicknames him Socrates and the name sticks. Socrates starts training Dan to become a warrior. I interpreted a warrior as someone who does not let successes or failures define them; rather they learn to be content at the center of their being no matter what happens. A warrior also strives to appreciate the simple joys in life. Dan undergoes rigorous training under Socrates. Most of his training is mental. Dan learns how to meditate and to see life from a new perspective. Dan starts out as a self-centered, easily agitated young man. At first, Dan lets Socrates s harmless quips get the best of him and he loses his temper multiple times. Over time, however, Dan learns to control his emotions and to take life less seriously. Dan also learns perspective. Before he met Socrates he thought achievement was the key to happiness. But, he moved from achievement to achievement and forgot about the journey it took to get there. Eventually, Dan comes to a critical moment in which Socrates puts him under a type of spell. Dan s life seems to flash before his eyes, and he realizes there is no time left to waste because happiness is in the here and now. In this moment, Dan s perspective finally changes and he becomes a true warrior. One of the most profound messages I learned is: There are no ordinary moments. Life is full of mini-miracles. Sometimes we get caught up in our own little worlds and we forget to appreciate the everyday miracles of life. Every breath we take, every sight we see, every bird we hear chirping is something precious and should not be taken for granted. Way of a Peaceful Warrior reminded me that life is peculiar and every moment in itself is amazing. Rachel Feeken Part of Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart s gymnastics program is also educational. She believes that it is important for the student -athletes to also share in their education. This is just one of the book reports that the gymnasts have written. Page 3 Pioneer Gymnastics
