THE GREEN SHEET Full-Card Analysis and Selections John M. Gaver III www.johngaver.com Churchill Downs: Spring Meet 2017 Twenty-Fifth Day: Friday, June 9, 2017 Post Time: 12:45 P.M. Eastern Churchill Meet Stats To Date: 238-68-44-38 29%W, 63%ITM Note: Selections are made in order, first through fourth RACE ONE The dark bay filly SECRET TRICK has never put forth a poor effort off the claim for trainer Mike Lauer, and the daughter of Hat Trick (Jpn) beat fellow entrants PINKING OF YOU, I AM MISS BROWN and CHEYENNE BLUES in her last start in Louisville on May 19 in game fashion, splitting horses and just getting up in the shadow of the wire. There isn t much early pace signed on in this heat which works against her typical closing style, but she doesn t have to come from out of the clouds to be a factor and will be tighter in her second start off a layoff; choice. I AM MISS BROWN finished well behind the top choice as the favorite in her last start, however the daughter of Big Brown will appreciate turning back in distance to this one-turn, eight-furlong trip and has enjoyed a solid 2017 to date, having finished in the money in four-of-five outings. She pressed an honest pace and gamely prevailed by a hard-fought three-parts of a length the last time she tried eight-furlongs in Louisville; contender. CHEYENNE BLUES stalked a moderate pace, made the lead and faltered in the stretch drive in her last start, where she was beaten on the square by the top choice by two lengths and change. Oklahoma-bred is better when allowed to settle and make one run, and she got wheeled back off a short eight days rest in her last start, her first off the claim for the high-percentage Karl Broberg outfit. She s another that likes this one-turn mile set-up, she turns back off her last start, and she attracts the services of Brian Hernandez, Jr. She s two-for-three lifetime under the Twin Spires; threat. PRINCESS DINAH returns to the races off a brief freshening and went to the sidelines off a pair of sharp efforts at Keeneland versus open $10,000 claiming rivals. She exits some slow heats, but she s a less than a length shy of 1

winning her past four dirt starts for the Stinson barn, an outfit that has made the most with limited opportunities so far in 2017; can t toss her and feel good about it. SELECTIONS: 3-2-4-5 RACE TWO ROYAL BLESSING was all dressed up and had nowhere to go in his last start hooking open $50,000 claiming rivals on the Matt Winn Turf Course, but the veteran campaigner finished with zeal when he altered course and was produced late to be beaten a short neck by the hard-knocking stakes winner Galton on the wire. Versatile eight-year-old son of Kitten s Joy made short work of $16K starter allowance company two starts back in Lexington on the dirt and it s difficult to ignore anything that trainer Brendan Walsh leads over, as his outfit is winning at a gaudy 39 percent clip at the tilt. The chestnut has a reliable closing kick; rates top billing. PLUG CATCHER is a pretty honest $5,000 starter horse on the grass, and I like how he improved on the rise in his last start for trainer Donnie Habeeb when he returned to the turf off a lackluster effort on the main track two starts back facing dime starter adversaries. His zero-for-four lifetime record on the weeds in Louisville is reason for concern, but his current turf form is sharp, as he s about a length off of winning his past three grass starts; contender. MAN OF STATURE was a bit rank in his last start, his second off a long layoff and his first for Hall of Famer Jack Van Berg, but he controlled a slow pace on a good turf course and stayed on resolutely in the lane to be beaten less than two lengths for all the money. He has a license to improve on that effort making his third start off an extended layoff and is 10-1 on the morning line; threat, at a price. The veteran campaigner MR. CHOW is a little cheap for this field, but he has a pair of wins over the Matt Winn Turf Course to his credit and will tighter this time around making his second start off a short layoff. Consistent bay gelding was a good second behind the useful Belvin facing open $15K stock at Belterra Park in his last start and his overall turf form is useful. He ll get a ground-saving trip on the hedge from his inside post draw; using in the exotics. SELECTIONS: 6-4-3-1 RACE THREE IN THE MOOD is a two-year-old first time starter that hails from the barn of Wesley Ward, an outfit that wins at a high-percentage with horses making the career debuts, especially with juvenile stock. Homebred chestnut daughter of Eskendereya is out of a stakes-winning Kitten s Joy mare that earned $198,013 and was also trained by Ward. Chestnut miss has been training forwardly of late and has a nice gate breeze at Keeneland 2

on May 20 in :48 2/5. She ll break running; pops at first asking. LAUDATION is a $110,000 daughter of Congrats that will make her career debut for trainer Steve Asmussen, whose barn sent out the impressive twoyear-old first-timer Reride ($4.20) to win yesterday s opener. Chestnut filly is out of Rite Moment, a multiple graded stakes winning daughter of Vicar, and her limited public work tab is sharp, including a :36 flat blowout move in Louisville on June 4 which should have her on her toes; major player. The Texas-bred miss PATRONA MARGARITA is a homebred Special Rate (by Pulpit) filly that sports a gap-free public work tab for trainer Brett Calhoun, whose outfit is more than capable of getting one ready to fire right out of the box. Dark bay filly has a sharp :47 4/5 half-mile move at Churchill on May 20, and she followed that work with a 1:01 4/5 fivepanel breeze from the gate on June 3; demands your attention in the paddock and post parade. It seems that NO PARTNERS outworked her stablemate and fellow entrant SHINE TIME in her last breeze at Ellis Park a bullet five-panel move in 1:02 flat by three-fifths of a second (about three lengths), and trainer John Hancock had a big spring at Keeneland, winning a handful of juvenile races. There s a big gap between her first quarter-mile breeze on January 15 and the subsequent threepanel move on April 24, but her current A.M. activity is consistent; more interested as the price increases. SELECTIONS: 7-2-6-8 RACE FOUR The dark bay colt IMPROVISER looks like he has the field in today s fourth over the proverbial barrel, as the son of Nobiz Like Shobiz takes a massive class drop from $100,000 optional claiming/ non-winners of three lifetime allowance company into this conditioned $8K claiming event for trainer Jack Frost. Three-year-old returns to the races off a brief freshening, won his last start off a layoff by open lengths and is a perfect two-for-two sprinting at a six-furlong trip on dirt. He beat a pair of next-out winners in his first two starts facing tougher company, and he pressed a quick pace while in deep waters facing the likes Chief Know It All, Hunka Burning Love and Bitumen at a seven-furlong, 184-foot trip at Keeneland back in early April; holds all the aces. LOYALIST has been a hot commodity at the claim box this year and was reclaimed by trainer J.R. Caldwell two starts back for $7,500. California-bred gelding made a solid move at the quarter-pole while six-wide but flattened out in the drive facing similar stock in his last start, where he broke from the eight-hole in a 10-horse field, and I like that he turns back slightly in distance this afternoon. He has finished in the money in nine of his past 13 starts for an outfit that is winning at a 43 percent clip at the meet; contender. UTMOST INTENSITY is a mere two-for-45 lifetime, but he s at his best on a fast main track and woke up on the drop in his last start at nearly 61-1, where he got shuffled back and ran twice to be second, beaten four lengths for all the money, and 3

finished in front of three rivals OUT OF THE TRAPPE, LOYALIST and HENDERSON COUNTY that he meets again in this heat. He ll get a groundsaving trip on the fence, the rail has been good all meet, and he s 8-1 on the morning line; likely overlay. HENDERSON COUNTY was the tepid beaten favorite at 3-1 on the drop in his last start facing similar rivals, but he failed to seriously menace and was beaten four lengths by UTMOST INTENSITY. He hasn t visited the winner s circle since last September and his form has been suspect off the claim for the Asmussen barn; seems destined for a minor award. SELECTIONS: 6-4-1-7 RACE FIVE I ll take a shot with the price play (6-1 morning line) KNIGHT OF DREAMS in today s fifth, a non-descript open $10,000 claiming event going a mile and sixteenth on the main track. Bay gelding was a good second on the rise facing $15K non-classified allowance company in his last start at Indiana Grand, where he pressed a sensible pace and dug in gamely in the stretch to be beaten a mere half-length on the wire at nearly 21-1. He s a tick cheap for this crew, but he has tactical speed, his form has improved for trainer Paul Holthus, and he s sitting on a sharp :47 1/5 half-mile move at Indiana Grand; choice, at a square price. MINEYEROWNMALONE ran like he needed his last start off a near two-month layoff, and he takes a marked class drop from $25,000 open claiming company into this open $10K affair. His best past form has been at second-tier tracks such as Delta Downs and Indiana Grand, but he ll likely improve in his second start off the shelf for the high-percentage Tom Amoss barn; contender. CROOKED AS CAN BE s form has been spotty since he returned from a near 17-month hiatus at Oaklawn Park back in February, and he has been the beaten chalk in two of his past three starts for trainer Brad Cox. He beat one horse trying $10K starter allowance company in his last start but made short work of open dime rivals at Keeneland two starts back, where he stalked a moderate pace and drew off in the lane. He s eligible for improvement making the third start of his current form cycle; contends on the drop. GOLD HAWK benefitted from a class drop and responded when the blinkers came off in his last start at Churchill back in early May, and the bay son of Empire Maker has hit the board in four-of-seven outings in 2017. He creeps up in class in this heat, however, and his last two wins have been at Sam Houston and Remington Park, respectively. I like the rider switch to Corey Lanerie, but this fellow seems destined for a minor award. SELECTIONS: 5-3-4-1 4

RACE SIX NORTH PRINCESS takes a stout class drop from maiden allowance company into this $10,000 maiden claiming affair and has all kinds of upside making just her second career start. Daughter of Northern Afleet caught a sloppy, sealed racetrack on debut, broke inward and slow and didn t pick her feet up, but that heat went in a snappy 1:10 1/5. She came out of that race and posted a useful half-mile breeze at Ellis Park in :48 4/5, and she will certainly be tighter this time around. She s a juicy 10-1 on the morning line and gets the services of veteran reinsman Jon Court; lots to like. R LADY HANSEN, like the top choice, takes a steep class drop from maiden allowance company into this dime maiden claiming heat for trainer Mike Maker, and while her form on the turf and Polytrack is awful, she did hit the board in her only prior effort on dirt, overcoming an awkward start in the process. She s eligible for improvement making just her third career start and gets a positive rider change to Corey Lanerie; contender. VERY ELEGANT is another that will appreciate turning back from a route race to a sprint, and the chestnut daughter of Notional creeps down in class for trainer Bernie Flint this afternoon. She has burned money at the windows in her past four races as the beaten favorite and has a penchant for minor awards having finished third in fifty percent of her lifetime starts. A repeat of her effort three starts back at Fair Grounds would make her competitive in this spot, however; figures for part, taking a stand against for top honors. TWINKLES made a solid inside move in the stretch in her last start but had little left to offer in the final eighth of a mile under the Twin Spires back on May 12, but that was at a mile and a sixteenth trip and she will appreciate turning back to this six and a half-furlong sprint in this spot. I like how she got shuffled back and ran on again to be a good third of ten facing similar rivals two starts back at a seven-eighths trip under jockey Miguel Mena; threat. SELECTIONS: 5-7-10-8 RACE SEVEN LEAVE IT TO MARIE drops in class, stretches out in distance and gets firsttime Lasix for trainer Paul McGee looking for form reversal, and her chances were compromised in the debut effort, when she broke slow and lost interest. She figures to be prominent early under Miguel Mena on the stretch out, and there is not a lot of early speed types signed on in this affair. She s a healthy 8-1 on the morning line; improvement expected. REWARD S GIRL will make her first start off the claim for trainer Chris Hartman, whose outfit wins at a high-percentage in this type of situation. Bay filly was a respectable third versus $10,000 maiden claiming rivals in her last outing, but she was competitive against maiden $30K company on the Polytrack at Turfway four starts back, and she has finished in the money in two-of-three lifetime starts in Louisville; contender. SMOKIN ASH is an improving gray daughter of Smoke Glacken, and she takes an 5

eye-catching class drop from maiden allowance company into this $20K maiden claiming affair in this spot for trainer Stephen Lyster, who has made the most with limited starters at the tilt. Her form in her last start may have been enhanced by the sloppy, sealed strip at Indiana Grand, but she split the field and hooked a next-out winner in that heat and has a license to improve making the third start of her current form cycle; threat. JEMROSE rallied when produced on the slight class drop in her last start, but she bumped a rival in the process and was disqualified from her winning effort. She comes right back off three weeks rest to face a similar bunch, and her form has improved with blinkers; cannot eliminate with confidence. SELECTIONS: 3-1-5-8 RACE EIGHT CLAIRENATION loves a flat five-furlong trip on the grass, possesses lethal tactical speed and is undefeated on the Matt Winn Turf Course for trainer Greg Foley, whose barn is enjoying a good meet winning at a 26 percent strike rate. Dark bay daughter of Bernstein returns to the races off a near four-month layoff but has won two her past three starts off the shelf, and she s sitting on a :48 4/5 half-mile breeze on the turf at Churchill around the dogs on May 30. She drops out of stakes company; major player. RUBY NOTION is a lightly-raced four-year-old with frequent layoff lines not a positive sign but she was only two lengths and change off her stablemate and European champion Lady Aurelia in the $100,000 Giant s Causeway Stakes at Keeneland in her last start. She was a neck behind the 8-5 morning line favorite in this heat NOBODY S FAULT in that affair while four-wide at the quarter-pole, and she s a stakes winner at this five-panel distance on the weeds. The bay filly is handy and can be placed anywhere jockey Julio Garcia desires; contender. NOBODY s FAULT is a deserved morning line favorite in this affair off her convincing win in the $64K Unbridled Sidney Stakes at Churchill 27 days ago, and she has never missed the exacta at this five-furlong trip on grass. She ll get plenty of pace in front of her to set up her late kick; threat returning to allowance company. BOOM BAM BING split the field in the aforementioned Unbridled Sidney Stakes in her last start, and the daughter of Exchange Rate is at her best on turf at this five-furlong trip. She will likely move forward in her third start off the shelf, gets a positive rider change to Brian Hernandez, Jr. and is a tantalizing 10-1 on the morning line; overlay material. SELECTIONS: 4-1-2-3 RACE NINE PATH LESS TRAVELLED turns back in distance and drops in class for the high-percentage Mike Maker outfit, and this dark bay son of Bellamy Road 6

demonstrated minor improvement on the drop and with blinkers in his last start and continues his class decent in this affair. He attracts the services of Corey Lanerie; choice. RED AGAIN s form has gone south of late and his best prior effort was around two-turns, but he s another entrant that takes a significant class drop from $30K maiden claiming company into this dime event for Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott; improvement expected. ARMY GREY broke slow and hit his best stride too late on debut at Indiana Grand for a nickel, but he has plenty of upside making just his second career start in this spot for trainer Mary Lightner, who has already sent out a longshot winner at the current meet. He steps up in class but acts as if he will relish the extra-furlong. He s 20-1 on the morning line; don t ignore. ALTITO gets wheeled back off 19 days rest and drops in class, though he probably wants more ground, and his current for has gone south. He didn t care for the slop in his last start or for the grass in the penultimate effort but has never been in this cheap; the class drop is the biggest attraction. SELECTIONS: 2-7-10-11 7
