Central Division champions, today play the third of four games against the Milwaukee Brewers after Miguel Montero yesterday hit a walk-off solo homer in the 10th inning to give Chicago a 5-4 victory to even this series it marked Montero s second extra-inning walk-off hit of the season as he delivered a walk-off single, August 29 Pittsburgh, to give the Cubs an 8-7, 13-inning win. Montero is the lone Cub this season with multiple walk-off hits in extra innings in 2015, Starlin Castro and Chris Denorfia had multiple walk-off game winners in extras for Chicago. Today, Jake looks to become the N.L. s first 18-game winner this season he has a 1.97 ERA (32 ER/146.0 IP) in his 22 home starts since July 7 of season. N.L. CENTRAL CHAMPIONS: Chicago, which appeared in the 2015 postseason as the N.L. Wild Card, will advance to consecutive postseasons for just the fourth time in franchise history the club first turned the trick way back in 1885 and 1886, and did so again from both 1906-08 and 2007-08. The Cubs clinched the division in 146 games, the fewest number of games Chicago has clinched its division in the divisional era (since 1969), as well as the earliest the Cubs have clinched a playoff spot all-time (thanks STATS, Inc.). The previous team to clinch a division with 16 or more games remaining in a season was the 2008 Angels they clinched the A.L. West with 17 games remaining. This marked the earliest clinch by a club in the N.L. Central Division since it was created in 1994 it surpasses the 2004 Cardinals, who clinched with 13 games left on their schedule. COMFORTS OF HOME: This marks just the seventh season since moving to Wrigley Field in 1916 that Chicago has won at least 52 games at home the Cubs won 56 games at Wrigley Field in both 1933 and 1935, 55 home games in 2008, 53 home games in 1932 and 52 home games in 1928, 1929 and this season. At 52-21 (.712), the Cubs have the best home record in the majors (Texas is second,.686) Chicago is 26-7 in its 33 home games, 19-4 in its 23 and is 11-2 in its 13. Today is the third of a 10-game homestand the Brewers (1-1), the Reds (3 games beginning Monday) and the Cardinals (3 games starting Sept. 23). ONE-TWO PUNCH: Kyle Hendricks leads the majors with a 2.03 ERA while Jon Lester is second with a 2.40 ERA the Mets Noah Syndergaard is third with a 2.43 ERA the time pitchers from the same team finished with the top two ERAs in the majors was in 2005, when the Astros Roger Clemens (1.87) and Andy Pettitte (2.39) turned the trick thanks to STATS, Inc. Hendricks has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his 20 starts dating to May 22 (1.59 ERA), the longest streak by any big league pitcher this season he is the fourth Cubs starting pitcher in the 30 years to allow three earned runs or fewer in 20-straight starts, joining Jake (29, 2015-16), Mike Morgan (27, 1992) and Frank Castillo (23, 1994-95). Central during this time from 6.5 games to 18.0 games. The Cubs have 15 games remaining and are on pace for 104 wins. HITTING THE MARK: Thanks in part to two homers and three RBI Wednesday in St. Louis, Anthony Rizzo has become just the second left-handed hitter to record multiple 30-homer, 100-RBI seasons in franchise history Rizzo, who season had 31 homers and 101 RBI, joins Billy Williams, who turned the trick three times (34 HR, 108 RBI in 1965; 42 HR, 129 RBI in 1970; 37 HR, 122 RBI in 1972). Rizzo is just the fifth player in Cubs franchise history to record consecutive 30-homer, 100-RBI campaigns the others: Sammy Sosa (nine times), Ernie Banks (four times), Hack Wilson (four times) and Ron Santo (twice). Rizzo enters today s contest tied for fourth in the N.L. with 31 home runs while his 101 RBI are third in the Senior Circuit. Bryant leads the N.L. and is second in the majors with a 7.6 WAR (Mike Trout leads with an 8.2 mark) Bryant is on pace for 41 homers, 105 RBI and 126 runs scored. Bryant s 37 homers this season are tied for the most in the N.L. and are the most by a Cub since Aramis Ramirez hit 38 in 2006. LEADING THINGS OFF: Dexter Fowler on Tuesday night hit his seventh lead-off homer of the season, the most by a Cub in a single campaign since Alfonso Soriano hit a franchise record 12 lead-off bs in 2007. Fowler is hitting.396 (36-for-91) with 13 walks and two HBP in 106 plate appearances (.481 OBP) leading off a game this season. Fowler is 9-for-25 (.360) with seven walks, a double, a triple and two homers in his seven games following a 0-for-19 skid. ADDISON MUSCLE: With 20 homers and 92 RBI on the season, Addison Russell is just the second Cub to reach the 20-homer mark in his age 22 season or younger joining Ron Santo (23 homers in age 21 campaign in 1961) his 92 RBI are the most by a Cubs player in their age 22-or-younger season since Vic Saier drove in 92 runs in 1913 at age 22.
