June 2018 newsletter General Notices 62 nd Classic Bath to Bradford race on Saturday 30 th June and the Hassler Circuit Race on Sunday 1 st July A very big thank you to all those members that helped to organise the weekend of racing, a fantastic club effort, made the weekend a huge success both on and off the water. With such glorious weather, which helped to attract by far the largest turnout of paddlers we have seen for many years. Just over 220 across the two days. In the Bath to Bradford 12 mile upstream race, with its five demanding portages, there was an exciting finish between two Bradford senior K2 crews, with James Escott and Connor Peters pipping Stan Missen and Tom Simmons to the finish, in a time of 1hr 36min. In the Hasler Circuit Race on Sunday. The 4, 8 and 12 mile races had a total of 34 club paddlers taking part, gaining 7-1st, 4-2 nd and 4 3 rd places a fantastic effort by all. For race results please see above attachment. For the South west region we earned the maximum club points, all helping us to get to the Hasler Finals in September. On Saturday and Sunday the newly acquired club barbecue which was donated by Apetito Trowbridge, was a sizzling success serving up hot dogs and burgers. When all the deductions for prizes and race levies have been paid there should be a nice profit for our club funds. We will let members know the final amount latter. Again many thanks to all the club volunteers and paddlers that took part.
Many thanks to John Escott for running the capsize and rescue session on Saturday 23 rd. disappointingly only our four young ladies took part and they all enjoyed the session. Race/Event Reports Reading K4 The club sent 20 paddlers in five K4s to the Reading CC K4 event on 10th June. The Senior Men's K4 of James, Steve, Tom and Rob started the racing off, managed to claim a second place whilst the Senior Women's boat of Hannah, Vicky B, Alana and Sarah, paddling together for the first time, finished an
impressive third. It was a good showing from Junior Women's boat of Georgia, Abbey, Ceinwen and Cloe, who sat in a K4 for the first time moments before their race, and finished 7th. The Junior Men's boat of Connor, Jo, Matt and Joe started strongly and managed to finish a creditable fifth in a fast race. The highlight of the day came in the Mixed Men's and Women's Senior K4 where Vicky K, George, Joe S and Bo led from the outset and dominated the field finishing in first place. Well done to all competitors and a special mention to all of the supporters who turned up to cheer the club on. It was a great club day out! Icon Classic Surf Ski Race 2018-23rd June The 17km Icon Classic race, starting from Woolacombe Bay and finishing at Combe Martin, takes in some of the most beautiful scenery you will witness in a kayak race. This year it was designated as the Single ski National Championship race, and was hotly contested with international superstars from over the world coming to compete. This years weather made for a very hot but unfortunately very flat race which turned the race into a very hard slog. We had 6 Paddlers taking part from Bradford with some very good results: Tom Simmons 1st Double Ski (paddling with Dean Terry from Royal CC) Rob Beer 7th Double Ski James Escott 9th Open Men Ski (7th Brit) Mark Escott 3rd Masters Men Ski Stan Missen 8th Veteran Mens (7th Brit) Andrew Phillips 14th Masters Men Ski Kevin Littlehales 12th Veteran Mens Ski (11th Brit) Congratulations to all those who raced. Congratulations to Bo winning the Lake Windermere surf ski race. Report by George Stevens. The Windermere Summer Solstice Lake Race is an exciting 2 day event held on England s longest lake, at the heart of the beautiful Lake District National Park. The race involves paddlers of all abilities completing either the half or full
length of Windermere and open to an array of boats from surf skis to canoes to stand-up paddleboards. Some are there just for the challenge of the journey and others to take the race record! The aim of the game is to get all paddlers involved, enjoying England s longest lake on the longest day of the year. Day 1 10.5 miles Route: Ambleside to Fell Foot On arrival at Ambleside car park straight away you start checking out the competition, how many surf skis, how many K1s, how stable, how fast, which boat, which paddler! Then to the lake...what are the conditions like, how breezy, how busy and most importantly - where the sun is! Well, this is what I was thinking anyway, I can't speak for Bo who was organising himself for a race ahead. 1100 on the dot, with the conditions good, the racers are under starters orders. Then, in a medley of splash, the dots in the distance were off! With a quick scramble the super slick support crew (Me, my mum and Edie (our dog)) were on the road, destination Fell Foot and the finish line. 30 minutes later we arrived confident we'd got there before Bo, phew, support crew credentials still intact. Time to secure our finish line view position and meet up with the rest of the family (sisters, nephews and nieces) to get the picnic set up! 1220 ish the first boats started coming in, 4 K1s and then finally the 1st Surf ski in sight...but was it Bo? Yes! In a very respectable 1hr 30, my hero crosses line and I'm inspired to race tomorrow. Day 2 5.5 miles Fell Foot to Fell Foot. Sun, sun, sun! Happy days... what could be better than the glorious backdrop of the Lakes for my favourite pastime? Everyone's chatting about yesterday's event and the race ahead, some competing in both, some competing for the first time in a race on Windermere (me)! There are people from all over the country and different clubs, sharing experiences and enjoyment for the sport. It was a fab race, the surf ski looked after me well, swell and wake handled easily. I was hoping for a finish time of under 1hr 15 but at the half way point, realising I was 30 mins in, I went for it. 28 minutes later I took 3rd overall, first female - looking forward to next year already!
