Welcome to Divisional Racing In an exciting transformation, the Northern Marathon Series will move to a divisional format with a number of marathon races hosted by both QLD & NSW Clubs in the newly named 2018 Pacific Coast Paddle Series. The series will be open to all craft: TK1, TK2, K1, K2, all Skis, Stand-up Paddleboards, Outriggers, Sea Kayaks and Canoes. The idea of Divisional racing is to race against paddlers of the same speed, regardless of craft, age or gender. Each Club involved will offer a Long Distance (15km & above), Middle Distance (10km & above) and a Short distance (5km & above). - Long Distance will have 8 Divisions (L). - Middle Distance will have 9 Divisions (M). - Short Distance will have 4 Categories (S). Competitors will earn Series points which will include Race place points and Volunteer points (if applicable). Clubs will earn points which will include Participation points, Travel points and Volunteer points (if applicable). 4 2018 Pacific Coast Paddle Series Information Booklet
Race divisions Each paddler will be placed in a division based on the average speed. All Long Distance races will have 8 Divisions. Long Division Division L1 Division L2 Division L3 Division L4 Division L5 Division L6 Division L7 Division L8 Average Speed 12.5 Km/Hr and above Between 12.0 and 12.4 Km/Hr Between 11.5 and 11.9 Km/Hr Between 11.0 and 11.4 Km/Hr Between 10.5 and 10.9 Km/Hr Between 10.0 and 10.4 Km/Hr Between 9.5 and 9.9 Km/Hr 9.4 Km/Hr and below All Middle Distance races will have 9 Divisions. Middle Division Division M1 Division M2 Division M3 Division M4 Division M5 Division M6 Division M7 Division M8 Division M9 Average Speed 12.5 Km/Hr and above Between 12.0 and 12.4 Km/Hr Between 11.5 and 11.9 Km/Hr Between 11.0 and 11.4 Km/Hr Between 10.5 and 10.9 Km/Hr Between 10.0 and 10.4 Km/Hr Between 9.5 and 9.9 Km/Hr Between 9.0 and 9.4 Km/Hr 8.9 Km/Hr and below 2018 Pacific Coast Paddle Series Information Booklet 5
All Short Distances races will have 4 Categories. Category Category S1 Category S2 Category S3 Category S4 U13 Girls U13 Boys Beginners* 75+ paddlers who wish to do a short distance. *All new participants are allowed to do 4 short distance races before they will be asked to move up to the middle distance (this category will be reviewed as the series progresses). Notes: If a long distance paddler wishes to race in the middle distance they will have to race in a speed division above the one they compete in, for long distance races. For example, if they race L3 (11.5 to 11.9 Km) in long distance races they will be asked to compete in the M2 (12 to 12.4km) division for the middle distance race. This rule should make it fairer for those who normally race the middle distance. If a middle distance paddler wishes to race a long distance race they will have to race the same speed in the long distance as they are racing in middle distance. If you have nominated to race in the long distance and cannot finish, you cannot change to middle distance mid-race, your race will be deemed DNF (did not finish). Please choose the right distance for yourself! 6 2018 Pacific Coast Paddle Series Information Booklet
Ranking & Changing Divisions Rankings The Series Committee has verified all paddler s time from the 2017 Season and has completed most of the rankings for the 2018 season. Any paddlers that the committee is unfamiliar with, or unsure of, will use their 1 st race as a ranking race. The paddlers will be given a provisional division to race in and be given points if they place. If their speed is greater/slower than the provisional division they will be moved into the appropriate division after the race. This will not change the results in the ranking race. Changing Divisions To be moved up a division a paddler must have completed 3 races at the speeds of the division above. The decision to move a paddler up a division will be made only by the Racing Committee. To be relegated back a division; the paddler will have paddled 3 races at the average speed of the division below. The decision to move a paddler down a division will be made only by the Racing Committee. The paddler s accumulated points will be carried over to the paddler s new division. The division a paddler finishes in, at the end of the year, will be the division that the paddler will be eligible for any placings. If a paddler chooses to race a new doubles combination, they will have to race in the division of the fastest paddler in the boat. Eg: Paddler 1 is in Div 3, but paddler 2 is in Div 2, then that boat will race in Division 2. 2018 Pacific Coast Paddle Series Information Booklet 7

Boat and Race Safety Preparing for the race Check the integrity of your paddle craft before each race. Ensure it has sufficient fixed buoyancy to float level when full of water. Paddle craft will be checked for buoyancy before each race. Race Safety Briefing It is the responsibility of all paddlers to attend the safety briefing and listen to all course instructions preceding each race. Lifejackets Wearing of lifejackets is compulsory for all paddlers in NSW. However host clubs are encouraged to apply for exemptions from this requirement. All paddlers will be notified in advance if lifejacket wearing is required. Any paddler under 14 years, and any paddler who cannot swim or any other paddler so directed by the Competition Committee must wear a life jacket to the approved standard (minimum Level 50 special purpose OR Level 50S). During the race Paddlers should observe and proceed with caution, when proceeding past approaching craft. Take particular care when cutting a corner, keeping a close watch for on-coming craft. Assistance must be given to any paddler in distress. The safety of human life far outweighs the importance of winning. Your race time will be adjusted if you lose time assisting another paddler. Paddlers are encouraged to be Sun Safe and carry and consume sufficient water to prevent dehydration. 2018 Pacific Coast Paddle Series Information Booklet 11
