YEAR 7 GIRLS HOCKEY Y7 Hockey V Howells 11/11/15 Year 7 had their first hockey game on the 11 th November against Howells. Both 7a and 7b played. Cowbridge B team had first push back and began the game strong. Aimee and Ellie got us started with brilliant dribbling and passing into pace. Lily and Sophie were in good attacking position and helped get the ball into the shooting circle. A crowded shooting area made it difficult to get the ball in the goal but with persistence and patience an early goal came. Cowbridge were in the Howells half for the majority of the half but we struggled to score as both teams scrapped for the loose balls in the circle. Howells were fast on the counter attack and looked dangerous as the dribbled towards our goal. Good composure from Bethan Light and Alice Philips slowed them down but they took their chance and evened the game. Ellie Thomas had a free hit at the top of the de and with no hesitation she quickly drove forward and hit the ball in the back of the goal. Ending the first half 2-1. The second half began and Cowbridge started well. As in the first half the girls were continuously putting pressure on the Howells defence. The girls started to pass out wide and create space in the shooting circle. Good support work by Anya Davies outside the circle gave the girl s time to move into good spaces. This improved our game and we finished the game off with another 3 goals. Final score 5-2!!! Cowbridge A team also played Howells in a very close and thrilling game. Howells had first push back and applied the pressure from the start, quick passing and good skills by their midfielder made it difficult to stop them attacking. Excellent defence and hard work by Seren Burgum stopped them in their tracks Alys and Lily had very good positioning out wide opened up the game and gave us some lovely play. Lily made many runs down the right hand side and passes the ball to Alex and Hannah up front. Strike after strike; it seemed almost impossible to get past their strong defence. Howells cleared the ball out of the shooting circle every time which meant were then on the back foot. Alys, Lily and Seren worked endlessly to get back and defend but a quick midfielder for Howells slipped passed our defence and scored. Half time score 1-0. Second half was a similar story with Cowbridge in the Howells half of the pitch for most of the half. Seren applied excellent pressure in both defence and attack and provided our attackers with plenty of opportunities to score. Howells had excellent defender and getting pass them seemed almost impossible but Alex and Hannah worked very hard to create space. The girls tried relentlessly to get the ball past them, around then and over them but nothing seem to be working. Howells good clearing always seemed to put us on the back foot as they quickly forced a counter attack. Natasha and Amber tackled well and cleared the ball out wide to our wings. Everybody gave 100% but unfortunately we were unable to get past Howells strong defence finishing the game with a 2-0 loss.
Year 7 Girls Hockey v Bro Morgannwg Year 7 girls played Bro Morgannwg away on Monday 16th November. We played 7-a-side and each team played three matches. The B team captained by Aimee Eason won two matches (2-0 and 1-0) and lost one match (2-0). The A team captained by Seren Burgum won all three of their matches (2-0, 2-0 and 2-0). Excellent play from the girls their stick skills have really improved with the training since September. Well done girls! Year 7 Netball The Year 7 netball teams played Stanwell at home on Tuesday November 17th. After an amazing victory over Bro Morgannwg the previous week the girls were excited to take the court. In the A team match, Stanwell started strongly and despite some excellent interceptions from Georgina Cole and Mia Davies in the circle, they quickly got the score board under way. Laura Hawkins at C, and Kate Parry at WA worked tirelessly to bring the ball in to the attacking end for Alys Hale and Aimee Eason to capitalise but the Stanwell defence were solid and they led the way 5-2 at half time. In the second half, Aimee Eason moved out to GA and controlled the attacking circle perfectly to unnerve Stanwell. Vivian Yip came on to WD and provided some much need support down the court. It was a solid yet controlled second half for Cowbridge who were determined to pull back the goal margin, and they did. The score in the second half finished 5-5 showing great resilience! However due the strong first half from Stanwell they took the overall win with a final score of 10-7. Well done to all the girls who played. In the B team, due to the amazingly encouraging numbers in training each week we fielded a B1 team in the first half and a B2 team in the second half to give as many girls as possible a chance to play for the school. Cowbridge had a great first half and went in at half time 1-0 up thanks to a superb goal from Megan Rees and some excellent defending from Bethan Light and Hannah Robins. In the second half, Cowbridge started well with an early goal to take the score to 2-0. This however gave Stanwell the drive they needed to forge ahead with greater conviction and quickly scored three successive goals. The final score finished 3-2 to Stanwell. Well done to all the girls. It was lovely to see so many pupils out representing the school!
YEAR 7 RUGBY Member of Staff: Mr S. Davies. Sport: Rugby. Date: 18 th November 2015 Year Group: Year 7. Tougher Mudder Rugger. The Year 7 rugby team produced an impressive win against Barry Boys yesterday, in their third Gold league fixture of the season. The final score was 12 5, with all players continuing to play well, and following on from a great training session and turn out last week. The conditions the game were played in were challenging to say the least, with the boys coming off the field after the game covered from head to toe in mud! Having to pick a man of the match was an impossible task, with so many boys playing well. Cully Field, Finn Ball and Cai Hopkins all scrimmaged extremely well to produce a brilliant platform to work off. Josh Hamner ran hard, breaking through a number of tackles and gaining a lot of yards. Cai Wardhaugh, Dan Heselton, Thomas Lyndon-Evans and David Heard worked tirelessly in defence, stealing the ball and creating countless turn-overs throughout the game. Archie Lloyd provided lovely service to his fellow backs, with Morgan James and Matthew Cooper bursting through the middle. James Murray and Kyle Smith also worked well in attack, cutting the angles, and getting plenty of space on the wings. Will Harris also put in a strong performance, kicking one conversation and making a number of weaving runs through the defence. The tries were scored by Cai Wardhaugh and Josh Hamner, but the Man of the Match went to Cai Wardhaugh for his outstanding tackling, turnovers and organisation of our defensive line. Well done again Year 7, you are all developing as individuals, but more importantly as a team. Keep up the hard work, as there are more games to come!
