SETTING THE STAGE After sweeping a four-game homestand to vault up to third place in the Horizon League standings, Green Bay heads to the road for four-straight games. The road trip begins at Valparaiso, the defending Horizon League champion who is sitting one game ahead of the Phoenix in a tie for first place. Freshman Jordan Fouse led the Phoenix in last week s victories over Youngstown State and Cleveland State, highlighted by a 17-point, 10-rebound effort against the Vikings on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix won 77-50, the largest margin of victory by the Phoenix in a league game since a 78-49 win over Youngstown State on Feb. 5, 2005. Fouse was not alone as four Phoenix teammates reached double figures in the win (Sultan Muhammad-15, Alec Brown-14, Keifer Sykes-14, Brennan Cougill-11). THREE-POINT PLAY 1. INSIDE THE SERIES: With wins in three of four games the past two seasons, Green Bay leads the all-time series with Valpo 26-16. The Crusaders hold an 11-9 edge in the ARC, but the Phoenix won 63-61 in Valpo exactly two years to the day of Wednesday night s game. Then a freshman, Alec Brown had 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks in that victory. 2. IMPACT FRESHMAN: Fouse s impressive performances last week earned him his first honor from the Horizon League. The 6-foot-7 Fouse was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Week on Monday after averaging 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. One of only three Green Bay players to start each game (Brown, Sykes), Fouse leads all Horizon League newcomers in rebounds (2nd), steals (3rd) and blocks (4th). 3. DEFENDING THE HOME COURT: Green Bay s 4-0 homestand was built on the strength of impressive defense. Mixing up man-to-man and zone defense, the Phoenix allowed just 50 points per game and 32.6 percent shooting in the four games and added 26 blocks and 29 steals. Getting a season-high six blocks from junior Alec Brown, Green Bay had 10 blocks in the win against Cleveland State, tying for the second-most in program history. Fouse tied a school record with seven steals against Loyola. GREEN BAY PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. In that win, Kam Cerroni made five three-pointers and scored a career-high 23 points. In the two meetings, Cerroni went 8-of-13 from long range and averaged 17 points. BROWN VS. THE CRUSADERS: In four career games against Valparaiso, Brown has been consistently tremendous. The 7-foot-1 Brown has scored at least 15 points in each game and is averaging 18.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest. He is 26-of-51 (51 percent) from the field and 22-of-23 from the foul line in the games. Last year at the ARC, Brown went 8-of-15 from the field and totaled 21 points and 11 rebounds. LOOKING TO JOIN THE CLUB: On the strength of his 74 points against Valpo, Brown has 963 career points and is closing in on becoming the program s 25th member of the 1,000-point club. The last Phoenix player to join the 1,000-point club was Rahmon Fletcher, who also did so as a junior in 2009-10. RESERVE ROLES: Despite playing just three players off the bench, Green Bay got 31 points from its bench against Youngstown State. Freshman Carrington Love made all three of his shots and 5-of-7 free throws en route to 11 points. Also off the pine, senior Brennan Cougill and Cerroni added 11 and nine points, respectively. The 31 points scored off the bench was the second most by the Phoenix this season and most in a Horizon League game. FREE AND EASY: Green Bay is second in the Horizon League, and its 75.2 percent from the line ranks 20th nationally. The Phoenix is 321-427 on the season and, among teams ranked in the top-25 nationally in free-throw percentage, Green Bay has made the third-most free throws. Green Bay has made more free throws than any other Horizon League team, and on its recent four-game homestand the Phoenix made 30 more free throws than its opponents attempted. DOUBLE THE FUN: Against Cleveland State, Fouse (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Cougill (11 points, 10 rebounds) both had double-doubles to give the Phoenix six double-doubles this season. The game marked the fifth time in Green Bay s Division I history that two players had double-doubles in the same game, and the second time this season. Brown (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Cougill (17 points, 10 rebounds) against Southern Utah on Nov. 16. Remarkably, four of the occasions with two double-doubles have happened under Wardle. A native of McCordsville, Ind., Turner has started 37 games in his Phoenix career. His last trip to Valparaiso was memorable for the wrong reasons as Turner left the game with a season-ending torn ACL. BALANCED ATTACK Green Bay put five players in double figures on Saturday against Cleveland State, with Fouse (17), Muhammad (15), Brown (14), Sykes (11) and Cougill (11) reaching double figures. It was the first time since a contest at Detroit (Feb. 12) that five Phoenix players reached double digits in the same game. CONSISTENT LEADER Sophomore Keifer Sykes ranks fourth in the Horizon League in points per game (15.3). The 5-foot-11 Sykes saw his streak of 12-straight games in double figures end against UIC but he has reached 10 or more in 17 of 19 games this season and 32 times in his last 36 outings. He has scored 20 or more eight times, including five times in 2012-13. Sykes has led the team in assists in 12 consecutive games. FIRST FIFTY Wednesday s game will be the 50th career game for Sykes, who has now scored 625 points (12.8 points per game). Sykes scored 335 points as a freshman, the most since Tony Bennett in 1988-89. He is now on pace to score the fourthmost points by a Phoenix sophomore. HANDLE THE ROCK Since a forgettable opener in which he committed eight turnovers without an assist, Sykes has been terrific handling the ball. With an assist-to-turnover ratio better than 2-to-1, Sykes has 79 assists compared to just 39 turnovers in the past 18 games. Sykes streak of double-digit scoring ended at 12-straight games, but he takes an active streak of 13 consecutive games leading the Phoenix in assists. In the Horizon League, Sykes is seventh in assists (4.2) and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7). IMPRESSIVE AT 18 Sykes recently finished off an impressive year as an 18-year old, celebrating his 19th birthday on Dec. 30. Sykes scored 451 points in 29 games as an 18-year old, averaging 15.6 points per game. The first game of that run was at Valparaiso when Sykes had 17 points and seven assists on Dec. 31, 2011. The Chicago native reached double figures in 26 of those 29 games and also dished out 125 assists (4.3 per game). Including twice this season, Sykes also won Horizon League Player of the Week honors three times during the year (Feb. 27, Nov. 12, Dec. 24). The honor named after Hall of Famer Bob Cousy is handed out at the Final Four to the player named the top point guard in the country. RECORD STREAK With a miss against UIC, junior Kam Cerroni saw his school-record free throw streak of 40 consecutive free throws come to an end. Cerroni broke the record of 38 previously held by Matt Rohde (2002-03) with a pair of free throws at Detroit on Jan. 5, and his streak dated back to Feb. 4, 2012. The junior made all four of his free throws against Youngstown State and is now 32-of-33 at the charity stripe this season (97 percent). KAM CATCHING FIRE Cerroni led the Horizon League in three-point percentage as a sophomore in 2011-12 but struggled early this season from long range. However, Cerroni is starting to catch fire. He drained all three of his attempts from beyond the arc against Loyola, and since Dec. 12 at Wisconsin, Cerroni is shooting 45.5 percent (15-33) from three-point range. HOME SWEET HOME Green Bay is 9-1 at home this season after six consecutive victories. In the past three seasons under head coach Brian Wardle, the Phoenix is 31-7 at the Resch Center, including a 21-3 mark since the start of the 2011-12 season. Aside from its defense, Green Bay is shooting 45.6 percent at home and outrebounding opponents by four boards per game. Led by Keifer Sykes (60-75), Green Bay has made 68 more free throws than its opponents have attempted. Sykes is averaging 16.8 points and 5.1 assists at home. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? Through his first two and a half seasons, Alec Brown has positioned himself to become one of the best players in program history. He became the first sophomore in 18 seasons to be named first-team all-conference (Jeff Nordgaard in 1993-94 and Tony Bennett in 1989-90 were the last two). His 739 points were the fourth-most through a sophomore season in the program s Division I era, and he now has 949 points for a career average of 11.9 ppg. Brown s 425 rebounds were the most by a Green Bay player through a sophomore campaign in DI history. The 7-foot-1 Brown has reached double figures in 52 of 81 games and made 80 starts. BLOCK PARTY Brown has blocked 16 shots in the past four games and now has 31 on the THE LAST MEETING: GREEN BAY 75, VALPO 60 at GREEN BAY 75, VALPO 60 Junior Kam Cerroni has been playing at a high level for a few weeks for Green Bay. On Thursday night, his team needed a bounce back effort to kick off a threegame homestand, and Cerroni took his game to an even higher level. The sophomore made five threepointers and hit 6-of-7 free throws en route to a career-high 23 points, helping the Phoenix to a convincing, wire-to-wire 75-60 victory over visiting Valparaiso in Horizon League play. Cerroni scored 11 of Green Bay s points during a 15-5 run that turned a four-point lead (46-42) into a 61-47 margin with 7:49 left. Cerroni s big night overshadowed great balance by the Phoenix, who placed four players in double figures, and a somewhat historic night for Alec Brown. The two swats by Brown give him 132 for his career and tie him with Terry Evans (2005-09) for the most in program history, a record that has looked inevitable to be broken by Brown since he had six in his college debut. The 7-foot-1 Brown is tied for second in the Horizon League (1.6) and leads the league in HL play (3.2). With at least one block in 69 of 81 games, he holds the school records for blocks in a career (187), season (89) and game (11). WELL-ROUNDED ROOKIE Freshman Jordan Fouse is one of three Phoenix players to start each game this season (Brown, Sykes). Fouse is second in the Horizon League in rebounds per game (6.9) and tied for third in offensive rebounds per game (2.1). Fouse tied a school-record for steals with seven against Loyola, and he is third in the HL (1.6). The 6-foot-7 freshman has blocked 25 shots and is fourth in the conference (1.4). The Racine, Wis., native is the lone freshman in the conference to rank in any of those three categories (rebounds, blocks, steals). SULTAN OF STROKE Junior Sultan Muhammad had a big first half against Cleveland State, scoring 11 of his 15 points. Muhammad went 4-for-4 from the field in the half, including 3-of-3 from long range. The junior college transfer had a similar game on Dec. 30 when he made his first five threes and scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half. at GREEN BAY 77, CSU 50 Jordan Fouse scored a career-high 17 points and added 10 rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocked shots on Saturday afternoon. The freshman had four teammates join him in double figures as Green Bay (10-9, 4-2 HL) concluded its four-game homestand in style with a 77-50 victory over visiting Cleveland State (10-10, 2-4 HL). The Phoenix went 4-0 on its homestand and has now won seven games in a row on its home court. During its winning streak, Green Bay has held opponents to just 49.3 points per game and 33.4 percent shooting. The defense was on display again on Saturday, with the Phoenix blocking 10 shots and limiting Cleveland State to just 34.6 percent shooting (18-52). Junior Sultan Muhammad drained a pair of three-pointers as part of a 13-0 run that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 15-4 lead just over five minutes into the game. Muhammad made his first four shots (3-3 3FGs) and had 13 of his 15 points at halftime. The Phoenix defeated Chicago State in the season opener despite going 1-for-17 from long range. In both games the lone three-pointer came from a bench player. STIFLING D In Horizon League play, Green Bay is leading the conference in scoring defense (58.2), defensive field goal percentage (.351), rebounding margin (+7.5) and blocked shots (6.0). The team s three-point field goal percentage defense is third in the conference (.301). At least four Phoenix opponents have been held in the forties for the first time since the 2000-01 season. The Phoenix defeated North Dakota State (RPI #53) on Nov. 24 and Marquette (RPI #20) on Dec. 19. HAULING IN 500 Junior Alec Brown had one of his best efforts of the season against South Dakota. The 7-foot-1 big man was an efficient 8-of-10 from the field and made both of his threes en route to a game-high 19 points. Brown also grabbed eight rebounds to become the 14th Phoenix player to corral 500 for his career. He now has 551 career rebounds, grabbing 193 offensive rebounds and 358 defensive rebounds in 81 games. GETTING DEFENSIVE Green Bay held Illinois-Springfield to just 43 points on Dec. 30, a season low for a Phoenix opponent. The game also featured season lows in field goal makes (15), field goal percentage (25.9%) and free throw attempts (7). The 25.9 percent field goal percentage was the lowest in Resch Center history and the lowest by a Phoenix opponent since Nov. 17, 2000 (Idaho - 22.6%). HISTORIC WIN Not only was Green Bay s 49-47 on Dec. 19th win over Marquette historic because it was the first time the Golden Eagles had visited Green Bay in 12 all-time meetings, but it was also the first Phoenix victory in the Preseason Notes HL Overall Stats Team and Player Highs series since Jan. 7, 1995 (50-48). Green Bay improved to 3-9 all-time in the series and, of course, 1-0 at home. IN THE ZONE Green Bay played almost exclusively zone defense in the win over Marquette, and the scrappy Phoenix stifled the Golden Eagles throughout the night, especially in the second 20 minutes. In the second half, Marquette scored just 16 points and made 6-of-22 field goals. Green Bay s 49 points scored were the fewest scored in a Phoenix win since beating Detroit 45-42 on Jan. 30, 2006. RECORD TRIES Against Chicago State, Green Bay broke a 32-year old program record for free throws made in a game by knocking down 41-of-48 from the charity stripe. Sykes had 17 of the team s free throws to break the program s individual record of 15.
