Christopher Galbreath Jr. turned in his third straight double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Bearkats, but no other player was able to get into double figures against a Baylor defense that held Sam Houston to just 34.9 shooting for the night. The Kats trailed by as much as 23 in the first half before an 8-0 run in the final minute made it just a 15-point game at the break; however, the Bears hit more than half their shots in the second half and nailed a dozen free throws while never leading by less than 13 the rest of the way. Galbreath hit 10 of his 21 shots from the floor on the night and had 15 of his points in the second half, making the most of his 29 minutes on the floor. He has now reached double digits in scoring in each of his last eight games played. Albert Almanza added eight points off the bench and hit two of Sam Houston s five 3-point buckets. John Dewey was held to just three made free throws, but still dished out six assists and pulled in six rebounds. The Bearkats outrebounded the Bears 41-37 and 11-7 on the offensive glass, while losing the battle in the paint just 36-32 behind Galbreath s big night SERIES vs Ole Miss Series vs OLE MISS: SHSU trail 5-0 Last 5 Meetings Date Location Result Score Nov. 22, 2000 Oxford, Miss. BEARKAT BYTES - Chris Galbreath was named to the all-tournament team at the 40th and final Great Alaska Shootout last month in Anchorage and has been on fire since. He avearged 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in the threegame tournament, hitting 48.6 percent of his shots from the floor. He currently leads the Kats in scoring and ranks T-11 in SLC with 14.8 points per game. He also ranks second in SLC with 8.0 per game after three consecutive double-doubles. - Defense has been the Bearkats calling card early in 2017-18 as they are allowing just 61.3 points per game through nine contests and ranking 14th in the nation in that category. - Albert Almanza exploded for a big game against Schreiner last week, connecting on a career-best six 3-point buckets for a career-high 22 points. That surpassed his previous career high of 17 set against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi during his freshman season. He currently ranks second in the league in 3-point percentage and his 7.5 points per game is tops on the Kat roster among players without a start this year. - Chris Galbreath had 20 points at Idaho, his fourth 20-point outing of his career. He hit a pair of 3s in the game and is already 5-for-12 from long range this year after going just 2-for-12 in all of 2016-17. He currently leads the Kats in scoring and ranks T-11 with 14.8 points per game. He also ranks second in SLC with 8.0 per game after three consecutive double-doubles. - Bubba Furlong rejected four shots against Charleston, setting an early career high for the freshman. The Kats had just three blocked shots as a team entering the game and the four by Furlong was the most by a Bearkat in a single game since Michael Holyfield in 2014-15. - The Bearkats win over Santa Clara on Saturday was the first win for Sam Houston over a West Coast Conference team since 2006-07 when they knocked off Loyola-Marymount in Huntsville, 92-77. - Sam Houston shot 51.9 percent against the Broncos, their highest field goal percentage of 2017-18. It is their highest field goal percentage since hitting.565 from the floor in its win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last year, a span of 20 games. - Through seven games, the Bearkats are relying much more heavily on the three-point basket than a year ago. So far 39.4 percent of the Bearakts scoring output has come via the longball, compared to just 25.2 percent a year ago. Still, they have made at least seven threes in each of their last five games after canning 15 against Schreiner. That was the most 3s in a game for the Kats since hitting 16 vs UCA in 2015-16. - Similar to last year when the Kats reserves outscored their opponents in 27 games, the Bearkat bench is doing the same this year. In nine games played, Sam Houston s bench has outscored its opponent six times and tied in one. - Jamal Williams continues to fill up the stat sheet for Sam Houston, and on Thursday against St. Thomas got his outside shot going. He currently ranks in the top 10 in the SLC in field goal percentage after going 5-for- 5 against the Celts. He hit all three of his 3-point tries in the game, setting a new career high in made 3s. - The Kats have a history of sharing the ball, and this year is going according to plan once again in that regard. Sam Houston has assisted in 142 of its 203 made baskets this year, a mark computing to better than 71 percent of the Kats made buckets being assisted. FAREWELL TO WINNING PIECES Last year s big-three group of seniors Paul Baxter, Aurimas Majauskas and Dakarai Henderson were the faces of the program for the Kats since Baxter joined as a freshman for the 2012-13 season. The Kats won 89 games over the last four years entering 2017-18, setting a new program record for wins in a four-year stretch, which was previously set from 1969-73. Baxter and Henderson both played in 86 wins during their tenure, which is the most in program history. ONE KAT IS A LITTLE LONG IN THE TOOTH WIth six true or redshirt freshmen on the roster in 2017-18, you d think the Bearkats would be saddled with youth. But Sam Houston has a rarity in junior forward Josh Boutte. The transfer from Dodge City CC was born on Jan. 7, 1992, and according to research is the oldest player in Division I college basketball entering this season. He will turn 26 one day after the Bearkats play. REST OF THE KATS STILL CUTTING THEIR TEETH The six freshmen make up a group of nine newcomers on this year s roster, which is not a common thing for the Bearkats. This year marks only the second time since 2007-08 that the Bearkats have had at least 5 freshmen on its opening-day roster. GETTING OUT OF DODGE Boutte may be a new face for the Kats, but he does not lack familiarity with the Bearkat coaching staff. Assistant coach Kyle Campbell is in his first year on the Bearkat coaching staff and spent the last 5 years as the head coach at Dodge City Community College, where he was Boutte s head coach the past 2 seasons. Campbell compiled a 92-66 record at DCCC in his tenure, helping Boutte to honorable mention all-america honors last year after the sophomore averaged a double-double for the year. KATS RECOGNIZED FOR APR EXCELLENCE When the NCAA recognized more than 1,200 Division I teams for outstanding academic achievements in May, the Bearkats men s basketball team was one of four Sam Houston teams to be recognized. More importantly, they were just the second Southland Conference men s basketball team to earn the NCAA s public reognition award, joining Norhtwestern State who earned it both in the 2004-05 and 2012-13 academic years. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. YOUNG AND LONG BODES WELL FOR THE FUTURE Getting longer and more athletic was a point of emphasis for the Bearkats in its last signing class, and the coaching staff made sure that was addressed. Sam Houston will sport four players on this year s roster - all freshmen or a redshirt freshman - checking in at 6-8 or taller. Both Chidozie Ndu and Justin Van Pelt list at 6-11, while Bubba Furlong is in at 6-9 and Manny Gatkek at 6-8 with expansive wingspans. The Kats had just 2 players on last year s roster at 6-9 or taller, with one being Van Pelt during his redshirt season. GETTING DEFENSIVE Under Hooten, the Bearkats have always made things happen on the defensive end. The Kats forced 16.3 turnovers per game last season, a mark that was tied for tops among teams in the Southland. Additionally, Sam led the Southland in field goal percentage defense, holding its opponents to just 42.6 percent from the field. It was be the second time in the last three years the Kats have led the SLC in opponent s field goal percentage after they held teams to just 39.1 percent in 2014-15. In all, Sam Houston has led the SLC in field-goal percentage defense seven times, all coming since 2000. SEEING DOUBLE Don t be surprised when you look at the Bearkat roster and see the last name Delaney on the roster. It s not a misprint. Brothers Josh and Cameron Delaney are twins in their second year playing with the Kats and are one of just seven sets of twins in NCAA Division I college basketball. Additionally, their sister, Angela, suits up for the Bearkat women s team. That makes Sam Houston one of just two schools in the nation with a brother/sister combo on the hardwood. TEACH ME HOW TO DEWEY Sam Houston has had its fair share of success in the assists department over the years, but have not had a player lead the Southland in dimes since Ashton Mitchell did so in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Sophomore John Dewey III almost brought the assist crown back to Huntsvile last season, finishing second in the SLC with 4.9 assists per game. Sam Houston hast claimed that individual statistical title 10 times previously in Southland history.
