By Les Willsey AZPreps365.com Div. I Boys Hoops Corona del Sol Destined to Four-Peat There's a light at the end of the tunnel for Corona del Sol. Not that it's been a dark trip through the regular season and to the quarterfinals as the Aztecs seek a fourth consecutive Division I boys basketball crown. As coach Sammy Duane Jr. has been wont to say throughout the year, Corona manages to get most opponents best shot each time they suit up. The January and early February schedule afforded little time off for any team. Games came in bunches and often back-to-back. Now that state play has arrived each game offers a chance to catch a breath. For a team like Corona, that's bad news for the opposition as if Corona's talent wasn't enough to mesmerize foes. Corona got a week off between its supersectional final and its first playoff game -- a second-round game with Desert Ridge. An 81-46 lambasting ensued for young Desert Ridge. With three full days off, Corona has a rematch with Central in the quarters. They'll be no surprising the Aztecs here. They'll know what to expect and the outcome will come down to execution. When the semis come around Saturday, another two days of rest (no games). Time to recharge and focus. It's likely Corona will be at its best each round with time to recharge and prep. Its opponents the final three games simply must outplay Corona - no ambushes available. #8 Central (25-5) vs. #1 Corona del Sol (29-1): Central gained confidence from the scare it gave Corona on Feb. 13. The Bobcats also took down Cesar Chavez in the second round to avenge two prior losses to the Champions. Central's record vs. the other teams in the quarters is 2-2 wins over Desert Vista and St. Mary's and losses to Corona and Gilbert. Corona is seeking its 67th win in a row over the past two years vs. Arizona opponents. The Aztecs are 5-0 vs. quarterfinal teams. Corona's Duane Jr. can become the first big-school coach in state history to win four successive titles. Phoenix Union won four straight titles in the late 1950s and early 1960s with two coaches. Also senior Cassius Peat can add a fourth hoops title in as many tries to his resume he takes to Michigan State to play football. #5 Chaparral (25-5) vs. #4 St. Mary's: (17-12): Chaparral didn't lose a regular-season, powerranking game (18-0), the only team other than Corona to do so. The Firebirds are 3-2 vs. the remaining quarterfinalists. Chaparral had to dig hard late to rally past pesky Westview in the second round, finally pulling out a 66-64 win. An efficient, 22-point game from guard Brandon Hoffer helped bail out the Firebirds. St. Mary's had its hands full with Red Mountain, scoring the winning bucket in the final seconds to avoid an upset by the No. 13 seed. St. Mary's posted a 1-4 mark (win over Gilbert, losses to CDS-2, Central and Mtn. View) vs. other quarterfinalists. #6 Gilbert (21-7) vs. #3 Mesa Mountain View (23-7): This is a rematch and has the makings of a barnburner if the first is an indication. Mountain View snuffed out a 68-67 win on buzzer-beater in overtime by Tommy Kuhse. Both team put four players in double figures back in late December at the VisitMesa.com Invite. The game was close throughout -- 8 ties and 13 lead changes. Mountain View is 3-3 vs. the tournament field; Gilbert is 3-4 and has played every team in the quarters. The Tigers lost to Corona, Chaparral, Mtn. View and St. Mary's and defeated Mesa, Desert Vista and Central. #7 Desert Vista (24-4) vs. #2 Mesa High (26-4): Desert Vista engaged in a slugfest with Perry in the second round, outlasting the Pumas and Markus Howard, 73-66. The Thunder have plenty of weapons, perhaps more than Mesa can handle. Desert Vista is 1-3 against quarterfinal teams, beating Chaparral and falling to Corona, Central and Gilbert. Mesa has won its last nine games in a row, and is 4-0 in postseason with three supersectional victories and a second-round triumph over Boulder Creek. It's record vs. the quarterfinal field is 2-2. Both wins are over Mountain View; the losses to Gilbert and Chaparral. Predictions to the finish: Semifinals -- Corona del Sol vs. Chaparral and Gilbert vs. Desert Vista. Championship -- Corona del Sol over Gilbert. page 6

By Les Willsey AZPreps365.com Div. I Girls Hoops Desert Vista Still on Track to Repeat There were no real surprises in the first two rounds of the Division I girls state basketball tournament. With eight teams left and seven games remaining in the tournament there is little chance any upsets of significance are in the offing. Desert Vista, the defending champs, opened defense of its title with a 52-27 rout of Mesa Mountain View. The Lady Thunder carry a 19-game winning streak to the quarterfinals. Here are the matchups for the quarterfinals set for Wednesday (Feb. 25) at Grand Canyon University and some accompanying info on each: #8 Mesquite (21-10) vs. #1 Desert Vista (28-3): Two of the four quarterfinal matchups could be considered upsets if the underdog wins. This is one of those and the underdog is Mesquite. Mesquite took apart #9 Chaparral in the second round, winning by 22 points. The Lady Wildcats have faced Desert Vista this season, losing a month ago by 22. Mesquite, which starts no seniors, struggled early in that contest, trailing Desert Vista 16-4 after the opening period. A better start is absolutely essential for Mesquite, which shot poorly in the first meeting. Freshmen Lindsey Vanallen and Shaylee Gonzales have found their niche in their first varsity season. Junior Izzy Spruit is a streak shooter from the perimeter. Desert Vista is likely too formidable opponent for Mesquite to top, even if the Lady Wildcats enjoy a better shooting game. Desert Vista is loaded with experience in its starting five, with post Kristine Anigwe and guards Sabrina Haines and Toni Davis the leaders. Mesquite's record vs. the quarterfinalists is 0-6; Desert Vista is 4-1. #5 Millennium (26-4) vs. #4 Valley Vista (25-7: There isn't much difference between these teams. They seem as close as their seeds indicate. Millennium brings more experience to the matchup, the factor that gives it an edge. All of its key players played extensively in postseason last year, led by junior point guard Raina Perez and seniors Passionate Amukamara and Quynne Huggins. Millennium nearly upset Dobson in last year's quarterfinals, falling in overtime. Millennium is the lone Arizona team to defeat Desert Vista this season. Valley Vista, in its first D-I quarterfinal, rallies around sophomore Kiara Edwards and a pair of freshmen guards -- Rayah Craig and Taylor Chavez. Valley Vista started fast and held true to its lead against Basha in the second round. Valley Vista and Millennium thrive on pressing and pressure so the winner of similar style should rule the afternoon. Millennium vs. the other quarterfinalists is 1-2; Valley Vista is 2-2. #6 Dobson (27-2) vs. #3 Hamilton (23-8): This is the other rematch among the four games. Hamilton connected on a shot at the buzzer in early December to win by one. Both teams reached the semis last year and that's where their seasons ended. Dobson thrives on its depth, which is solid at every position. It relies often on a bigscoring night from senior Alexis Todd. Senior Dyesha Stahley runs the offense. The Lady Mustangs have become a very good defensive team in the half court and will need a strong effort to combat Hamilton's inside game and a couple of good perimeter shooters. Hamilton's balance on offense keeps the opposition honest in defending. Sophomore post Maya Banks and guards Makayla Filiere and Payton Whitmore lead the Lady Huskies. Dobson is 5-1 vs. the other quarterfinalists; Hamilton is 3-3. #10 Horizon (24-6) vs. #2 Liberty (27-3): Horizon has enjoyed a quietly successful season under coach Gerrard Carmichael, but is the clear underdog to Courtney Christmas-led Liberty. The Lady Huskies did not receive a first-round bye and have played twice in the tourney so far. They trounced Raymond Kellis in the first round, 53-25, and took to the road to edge #7 Highland in the second round, 42-37. Horizon's attack revolves around guards Leah Goodman and Andrea Easley. In the victory over Highland, Jordan Wehr came up big with 13 points and has been solid on the boards. Liberty took no prisoners in walloping Corona del Sol in the second round, 78-39. This on the heels of winning its supersectional the week prior. The Lady Lions have won nine in a row and 17 of 18. Christmas, a senior, warmed up at state with a 30-point, 11-rebound effort in the win over Corona. On a given night, Christmas can get complementary scoring support from Jenae Lewallen, Megan Smith and/or Anissa Hughes. Christmas is averaging just a tick under 20 points per game. Horizon is 0-2 vs. the other quarterfinalists; Liberty is 2-2. Predictions to the finish: Semifinals -- Desert Vista vs. Millennium and Dobson vs. Liberty. Championship -- Desert Vista over Dobson. page 14

By Andy Morales AZPreps365.com Phoenix Shadow Mountain (22-6) has earned the top seed a year after capturing the school's third state championship. Last year's squad was an eightseed but the Matadors went on an amazing run with wins over No. 9 Tucson Catalina Foothills, No. 1 Tucson Salpointe Catholic and No. 4 Vail Cienega before blowing out No. 3 Flagstaff in the final, 83-58. While that team may have been a team of destiny, this squad will have to run without the scoring from junior Michael Bibby. Bubby led the team from the point but he suffered an injury in December. Senior Craig Randall has played well in Bibby's absence and is averaging 21 points a game as is junior Jeffrey Rhymes. No. 9 Tucson Sunnyside (25-5) has a core group of players who have played together for three years now and they will need that chemistry against Shadow Mountain in the quarterfinals. Junior Jacob Inclan and sophomore Santino Duarte are averaging over 13 points a game each and will be a difficult match for the Matadors. It's been a generation since Tucson Cholla (25-1) has created a lot of buzz but the Chargers are back in a big way with a 2-seed. Cholla has scored over 100 points three times this year and over 80 points eight times. Leading the way is senior guard Jorge Carrasco with 22.5 points per game. When Carrasco isn't scoring or creating contact, he is passing off to senior Lual Magot (15.3) and sophomore guard Ezekiel Alley (13.9). The Chargers will take on No. 10 Phoenix Arcadia (20-9). The Titans lost to Tempe in the quarterfinals last year and senior Connor Nichols (19.2) and Avonte Nelms (12.7) have brought them back for another shot. Div. II Boys Basketball State Quarterfinals Preview Let's take a closer look at the other teams left in the Division II state playoffs: No. 3 Cienega (25-3) is led by seniors Terrence Johnson and Daren Biggs. The Bobcats are only five points away from a perfect record. Arguably the best student-section in the state, Cienega feeds off of momentum and are too athletic for most teams to cover. Cienega will face No. 11 Nogales (25-7) in the quarterfinal round. Ricardo De La Riva coached the Apaches to Southern Arizona's last state championship in 2011 and no one gave his squad much of a chance this year but here they are. Juniors Jose Estrada and Jesbre Valenzuela hope to bring some magic back. No. 4 Gilbert Christian (22-6) lost to Cienega in the quarterfinal round last year but they added junior transfer Mitch Lightfoot (19.1) to the mix to go along with junior Cameron Satterwhite (18.1). The Knights will face No. 5 Flagstaff (23-4). The Eagles are the returning runner-up team from last year but they lost six seniors to graduation and only have one senior this year but junior guard Kaleb Sandoval has emerged as the new leader. page 22

Anniversary Teams By Jose Garcia AZPreps365.com (Every year, the Arizona Interscholastic Association honors its basketball teams that are celebrating their 25th and 50th championship anniversaries. Below are the anniversary teams that the AIA will recognize during halftime of the this season's championship games. Feb. 28 D-IV girls at 11 a.m. at Prescott Valley Events Center (1990 Willcox Girls) That season, Willcox was motivated by its state championship game loss in the 1989 title game. After finishing 26-0, the Cowgirls left no doubt that the 1990 title belonged to them. The team won each playoff game by double digits en route to winning the program's second girls basketball title. That season, Willcox was led by future University of Arizona player Shawn Coder Nie, who still ranks as the state's No. 2 alltime Class 2A scoring leader with more than 2,100 career points. D-IV boys 1 p.m. at Prescott Valley Events Center (1990 Green Fields Boys) Green Fields won the title in only its second season as an AIA member. In its first year, the team also reached the championship game. Motivated by its 1989 championship loss, the 1990 Green Field squad avenged its title game loss, defeating Fort Thomas by 18 points in the 1990 title game. Green Fields finished the 1990 season with a 17-5 record. D-III boys at 6 at Gila River Arena (1990 Thatcher Boys) Thatcher defeated Pima 52-50 in the final to finish 24-2. Thatcher would go on to defeat the same team in the 1991 Class 2A game. (1965 McNary Boys) Some of the same players who helped McNary win a football title during that school year also helped the 1965 basketball team win its championship. The football coach, Pete Duca, also served as the school s basketball coach. The leaders on the basketball court were forwards Harding Stingley and Billy Ward, who hit a last minute shot to help his team win the basketball title. But this team will be remembered for the sacrifices it made after high school. Seven of McNary s teammates were in the Vietnam War. One of those veterans, Johnny Sedillo was killed in action during the Vietnam War. D-III girls at 8 p.m. at Gila River Arena (1990 Winslow Girls) The team returned most of its players from the 1989 championship, so it was the favorite to repeat in 1990. Winslow didn't disappoint, finishing the 1990 season with a 30-1 record and a hard fought 51-50 state championship victory over Snowflake. Winslow was led by the Cox twins, Karen and Sharon, and senior Aliesha Johns, who played for San Diego State. Johns still holds the school's record for points in a game, with 36, and three pointers made in a game, with 8. Winslow was coached by arguably the greatest girls basketball coach in Arizona high Buckeye s Championship Team from 1990 (photo supplied by Buckeye High School). school history, Don Petranovich, who won 8 titles and is the state's alltime leader in coaching victories. D-II boys March 2 at 6 p.m. at Gila River Arena (1990 Saguaro Boys) (AFTER THE THIRD PERIOD) The Scottsdale Saguaro boys won the 1990 Class 5A title thanks to one of the more memorable playoff runs in Arizona basketball tournament history. Saguaro was down by one with two seconds remaining in its first round game when guard Bryan Rice side-armed a one-handed buzzer beater from 15-feet. Despite trailing by double digits in its next two playoff games, Saguaro still won. In the final, Saguaro defeated heavy favorite Corona del Sol 88-78. The team finished with a 22-8 record despite being without its best players, Jimmy Kolysko (Ka-liss-ko), for about half of the regular season. (1990 Buckeye Boys) The 1990 Buckeye Hawks had a good group of senior leaders who wanted to prove they were better than the first round playoff loss they suffered the previous season. After a 24-1 season, Buckeye left no doubt who the king was in Class 3A in 1990. The Hawks defeated Snowflake in the final despite trailing by 15 points. It was only his second season as a head coach, but Marlin Diller still guided his tight-knit Buckeye squad to the 1990 title. (1965 Rincon Boys) To win the 1965 title, Rincon had to defeat North High for the third time that year. Not an easy task but Rincon pulled it pulled it off with a 80-72 victory. The team was led by all-state player Gary Haller and Jimmy Johnson. On the bench for Rincon was head coach Dick King, a former No. 1 recruit out of basketball rich Indiana, and assistant Dick McConnell, an Arizona coaching giant who won 774 career games. The 1965 Rincon team finished with a 19-3 record, capped by the school s first and only boys basketball championship. D-I boys March 2 at 8 p.m. at Gila River Arena (1965 Agua Fria Boys) The 1965 Agua Fria Owls started that season as one of the favorites in Class 3A. It only lost three games that year, including two games to Peoria High, but Agua Fria defeated Peoria High in the playoffs. In the championship game, the Owls trailed San Manuel for most of the game. But a late basket by future University of Arizona player Ralph Miller put Agua Fria up for good. Miller averaged 20 rebounds per game and grabbed 37 rebounds, a Class 3A state record, in a game that season. The team's head coach, O.K. Fulton, is an Arizona coaching legend and a man who was viewed as a father figure by his players. Rincon s 1965 Championship Team (photo provided by Rincon High School). (1990 North Boys) In 1990, the North Mustangs were preparing for a two-year run at the state title. The man in charge of North was a very dedicated and beloved coach in the Phoenix Union District, Hector "Coach B" Bejerano. The 1990 team was young, but it could run and play defense like no other team in the state that year. North went on to defeat Tempe High 49-43 in the 1990 Class 4A final to win the program's second ever title, finishing with a 23-6 record. page 31

By Andy Morales AZPreps365.com Karen Self has guided the Seton Catholic Sentinels to seven state championships including three of the last four. This year, however, Vail Cienega is 30-0 and seeded No. 1 while Seton Catholic (27-5) is the No. 2 seed. If both teams make it through the quarterfinals it will be a repeat of last year's final where the Sentinels outlasted Cienega 37-30. The Bobcats are coached by first-year coach Matt Ruiz and he brings senior standouts Treyanna Clay and Destiny Richardson to the court while Self will counter with freshman sensation Sarah Barcello and sophomore Jenn Wirth. Cienega will face No. 9 Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge (25-7). The Nighthawks under Nikki Simpson have set the new school standard with 25 wins. Junior Lexy Ram is difficult to guard, senior guard Alyssa Madlangbayan is a three-point shooter and senior guard Piper Mali will guide the team. No. 10 Tucson Sahuaro (27-4) has the difficult task of taking on Seton Catholic but the Cougars are a stronger team than their No. 10-seed implies. Junior Sydney Harden controls the inside with 17 points a game and sophomore Elena Arriaga has made 58 three-pointers to lead the team from the outside. Div. II Girls Basketball State Quarterfinals Preview Here are the other quarterfinal matchups in Division II: No. 3 Phoenix Thunderbird (29-2) was the No. 4 seed last year but did not make it out of the second round. The trio of juniors Brianna Lehew, Ozahria Fisher and Jazmine Covington helped the team rebound this year. All three are scoring in double figures. Thunderbird will face No. 6 Phoenix Sierra Linda (27-3). The Bulldogs were the No. 2 seed last year but were upset in the second round. Freshman Janae Gonzales is averaging over 16 points a game and senior Kaylah Burrows is just under 13 points a game. No. 4 Flagstaff (23-5) shoots plenty of threepointers and head coach Tyrone Johnson substitutes freely. Two big losses to Seton Catholic and Thunderbird before the winter break was followed by a record of 16-1 to end the regular season. The Eagles will face this year's Cinderella team in No. 12 Maricopa (26-5). The team feels no one gave them a shot but they came back from a 16- point deficit to defeat No. 5 Tucson in the second round. You can't count out the fight of junior Danae Ruiz and the coaching ability of Kati Burrows. page 34
