Audition Dates: December 11,12, 13, and 14 th Performance Dates: May 15 th 20 th 30 roles + Ensemble Rated G Book by Thomas Meehan and O Donnell/Music by Mark Shaihan Being part of a musical theatrical production is an enjoyable and rewarding experience! However, it also requires a great deal of commitment and focus. Students who are selected as part of the cast will be expected to commit to attending regularly after school rehearsals 2-3x/week. While not all cast members will be required for all after school rehearsals, students who take on leading roles should expect to be called for most after school rehearsals. These rehearsals will end no later than 5:00 for the months of December February; 5:30 for the month of April and 6:00pm for the month of May. In addition to regular rehearsals, there will be an extended tech and dress rehearsal on Thursday May 11 th and Monday May 14 th. These rehearsals will be mandatory for all cast members. A rehearsal calendar will be handed out at the first rehearsal following auditions, which will be Thursday December 21st from 4-5pm. Additionally, there will be a $50 cast fee for all students to cover the cost of costumes, props, royalties and other performance related fees Audition Requirements All students will need to have one of the monologues memorized for their audition (see page 3 for monologues). Students may choose any of the monologues, but will be considered for all roles. Students who are not willing to take any role should not audition. All students will be asked to prepare a verse and chorus from the song You Can t Stop the Beat (page 3) Preliminary auditions will be the week of December 11 th during enrichment time. Students should sign up for an audition slot in room in room E-113. Following the preliminary auditions, select students will be invited to the call-back audition scheduled for Monday December 14 th from 4-5:30pm. A call back audition indicates the director saw something in you and is considering you for a role. The call-back audition is a cold-reading of material from the musical. Students may be asked read a scene with other actors who have been called back, sing the preliminary audition song and learn and perform a 16 count dance. Please Note: If you DO NOT receive a callback audition, this does not mean you have not been cast in the musical. Additionally, receiving a callback does not mean you are assured a role. For more information, please don t hesitate to contact me at eklipa@rhmail.org or at 803-985- 1700 ext 27 between 1:30pm - 2:15pm Please KEEP this form for your records and to use as a reference 1

Full Synopsis Early on a Monday morning in early June 1962, Tracy Turnblad wakes up to face another day, full of hope and big dreams. After school, Tracy and her best friend, Penny Pingleton, race home to watch "The Corny Collins Show," a local teenage music and dance show on TV. On the show, teen idol, Link Larkin, pledges his love to Amber Von Tussle by giving her his Council Member ring, and Corny Collins announces auditions for new Council Members. Seeing her chance at stardom, Tracy plans to cut school and audition for the show, but her mother, Edna Turnblad, does not approve. Elsewhere, Penny and Amber also argue with their mothers Tracy goes to the audition, but is ridiculed by the girls on the show and sent away by Amber's mother and show producer, Velma Von Tussle. Sitting in detention, a frustrated Tracy learns some new dance moves from Seaweed J Stubbs, an African American student whose mother is Motormouth Maybelle, the DJ who hosts the monthly Negro Day on "The Corny Collins Show." The next evening there is a school dance and, there, Tracy is able to impress Corny with the new moves she picked up in detention, earning her a spot on "The Corny Collins Show." During her debut, Link Larkin sings a song just for Tracy. Now a local star, Tracy gets an offer to be the spokesgirl for Mr. Pinky's clothing store, The Hefty Hideaway, which gets her mother out of the house for the first time in years as the duo heads to the store to update their wardrobes. At school, Tracy continues to be teased by Amber and becomes the target in a dodgeball game. After the game, Link, Penny and Seaweed stay behind to help Tracy and, there, Seaweed invites them to join him at his mother's record shop. The Von Tussles barge in and spoil the party with their bigotry, but this gives Tracy the idea to integrate "The Corny Collins Show" by having Motormouth and her daughter, Little Inez, crash Mother/Daughter Day on the show. Fears of police and jail don't stop Tracy from moving forward with the plan. Unfortunately, the plan for integration lands all of the mothers and daughters in jail. Everyone gets out, except for Tracy, who is denied bail ("Baltimore Reprise"). Link comes to the rescue and professes his love for Tracy while, elsewhere, Seaweed and Penny reveal their feelings for each other too. The kids hatch a plan to get Tracy on the nationwide Miss Teenage Hairspray broadcast, and bring the news to Motormouth, who expresses that she will never stop fighting for equality Corny Collins begins his nationwide broadcast and introduces Amber for her dance. Just before Amber is crowned Miss Teenage Hairspray, Tracy and her friends storm in and take over the show. Corny declares Tracy is the new Miss Teenage Hairspray 1962, and Tracy declares that "The Corny Collins Show" is officially integrated. Edna makes a grand entrance, and even the Von Tussles can't resist the celebration! Please KEEP this form for your records and to use as a reference 2

Hairspray Audition Monologue Sheet Memorize any ONE of the following monologues. It does not have to be a monologue for the character you wish to be cast. Monologues for Girls Tracey: Why do they have to be so mean? You re short, you re stout, you re not council material. I wear the latest fashions, I keep up with all the styles. I m teasing my hair as high as I can! Will they give me a chance? Encouragement? Appreciation? No, all I ever hear is... Detention! Is there no pity for a teen just trying to fit in? Velma: Bang your drum Bonzo, no one cares. You crashed the studio once and got us all arrested. But we won t let that happen again. And don t get anymore ideas about showing up at the special. I have armed guards surrounding the eventorium to make sure Tracy can t get within 100 miles of that place. Amber: No, she can't be Miss Hairspray! She's the before in the Metrecal diet ad, and I'm the after; and afters always win! No! He can't sing to her because everyone knows that whenever he sings, he sings to me, he's completely involved with me, see? You people are ignoring the laws of nature! Motormouth: So you tried once and you failed. We can't get lazy when things get crazy. Children, you were not the first to try and you won't be the last, but I am here to tell you that I'm gonna keep lining up until someday somebody breaks through. And I've been looking at that door a lot longer than you. Monologues for Boys Link: I like these people. But whether or not they re on TV won t get me a recording contract You ve got everything; brains, talent, personality. Me? I ve got one chance to get seen nationwide. Tracy, Saturday night is everything I ve worked for. I m not gonna throw it away. C mon, I m leaving and you gotta go too. Corney Collins: And now for the talent portion of the competition where the frontrunner gals present a dance of their own creation. Presently it appears Amber Von Tussle and Tracy Turnblad are neck and neck. But according to the latest police bulletins, Miss Turnblad is still at large. Seaweed: Ain't no black and white up in here. Detention is a rainbow experience. That man can dine me on a diet of detention so long as he don't starve me of my tunes. (does a quick dance move/step) That was little something-something signified to say, "Hello, my name's Seaweed J. Stubbs, and what's yours? (beat) So, Tracy Turnblad, how you feeling about detention now? Edna: Oh, Sure! You're a visionary inventor saving the day. Tracy's a teen idol reshaping the world. And what am I? I had a dream too, you know. I use to make all my own clothes, remember? But I always dreamed that one day I would put out my own line of queen-sized dress patterns. Audition Song: You Can t Stop The Beat You can't stop an avalanche as it races down the hill. You can try to stop the seasons, but you know you never will. And you can try to stop my dancing feet but I just cannot stand still. Cause the world keeps spinnin' round and round, And my heart's keepin time to the speed of sound. I was lost til' I heard the drums then I found my way. Cause you can't stop the beat *a link to the song is on the classroom page of canvas and the website http://dutchmancreekperforms.weebly.com/ Please KEEP this form for your records and to use as a reference 3

For field trips extending the school day, please inform Mrs. Klipa ASAP. 2. If a student is ill and does not come to school on rehearsal days, they may not attend rehearsal. This will give students enough time to use the restroom, go to lockers, eat a snack, etc. Students are to report to the auditorium and sit in the center section of seats in preparation for rehearsal.
