ISSUE #1-2017/2018 Season 2017/18 sees the much admired and respected club stalwart Maxwell Alphonsus Drew take over the reins as our club president. Max has been a wonderful contributor to our club for many years, both on and off the field. Max, together with vice president Andrew Faull and treasurer John Penhall, provide the club with considerable expertise and management skills, ensuring that our club continues to be a strong and vibrant contributor to the Ballarat community. Our junior teams are also fortunate to have continued exceptional leadership with Tim Argall, David Knight and Natarsha Williams organizing and directing this very important section of our club. Our junior coaches and parent volunteers are acknowledged for their ongoing commitment and support of our under age teams.
Your new President Max Drew Max played all his junior cricket with Dennington, playing 80 Senior Games with Dennington before leaving to play with Grassmere. With his chosen profession in the grocery industry Max moved locations regularly playing in Geelong several times (4 different clubs), Colac, and Fairfield before finally putting his roots down in Ballarat. Max played in Premierships with North Shore in Geelong, City United in Colac and played representative or country week cricket with Warrnambool, Grassmere, Colac and the Geelong Cricket Associations. Max moved to Ballarat in 1992 and started playing cricket at Wendouree in 1998 and at the age of 40. He started in the seconds but that didn't last long, played mostly in the 3rds/4ths, then the 5ths started and Max has been a stalwart serving as a premiership Captain whilst being a mentor to our junior members. Max has been in upper management with his current employee Woolworths. Max serves as a Tribunal Member of AFL Goldfields Tribunal, has served as a committee member of the Saints Basketball Club. Max has served on our Committee for last 10 years and was inducted as a WCC Life Member in 2014. Max is versed in cricket club operation across numerous clubs, has a wealth of local cricket operations and those within the Ballarat Cricket Association and is already making his mark as our new President. We wish Max all the best as he takes on this leadership role within our Club.
Pre season training has again been very well attended and senior coach Peter Le Leivre is to be commended on his organization and direction of our indoor practice over the past 6-8 weeks. We have been able to use the Ballarat Badminton Centre as well as the new indoor net facility at our recently refurbished clubrooms. The club is very pleased with the progress of the construction of our new state of the art outdoor training facility. This will be completed in the next couple of weeks and will provide an outstanding venue for practice. We welcome a number of new senior players to the club namely John Butler from Ararat, Matt Hoy from Warrnambool, Ben Evans from Maryborough and Brendan Moyle from Echuca. Let s make sure that we make the effort to get to know John, Matt, Ben and Brendan as they settle into their new cricket environment. On field Senior leadership positions for the season are as follows Ist XI - Gavin Webb as captain and Liam Brady vice captain. 2nd XI - Justin Howlett as captain. 3rd XI s- Luke Robertson and Matt Jones captaining our TWO 3rd XI teams. 5th XI Brett Yates and Damien Green joint captaincy role.
Treasurer John Penhall asks that senior players pay their season subscriptions by the 31st October. If so desired, membership can be paid in two instalments however it is important to speak with John and let him know. Junior subscriptions are made via the website with details explained in the junior section. Senior training continues each Tuesday and Thursday commencing at 5 p.m. Our junior teams continue to train on Monday [ Under 13], Wednesday [Under 16] and Friday [Under 14]. There will also be training on Sunday mornings for our Milo, Under 12 s and girls groups. Speaking of the girls team if any young ladies between the ages of 10 and 15 are keen to come along and enjoy some practice and coaching, you are very welcome to attend training on Sunday mornings [from around 10.am.] at the nets. SOCIAL NOTES A number of functions have been organized during the early part of the season and details are as follows * Senior teams season launch at clubrooms on Thursday the 5th October from 6.45 onwards. * Junior section season launch at clubrooms on Wednesday the 11th October from 6.30 onwards. * Mystery Bus journey on Saturday October 28th. * Mega Sportsman s Evening at clubrooms on Saturday November 18. This season we look forward to again having access to our refurbished clubroom facility. Unless otherwise advertised, we will be returning to Wendouree each Saturday evening for our usual get together, brief match reports and presentations. We look forward to seeing senior and junior players along with parents, supporters, friends and past players coming to together to continue to build on our strong RED CAP community spirit.
