About Sailors WITH DISABILITIES Since 1994, over 42,000 children and adults have benefitted from programs run by Sailors with disabilities (SWD). SWD is a non-profit organisation created to act as a catalyst for change in the lives of people living with disabilities, their carers and disadvantaged youth. For 22 years, SWD has been bringing smiles to the faces of children with disabilities. Having the thrill of steering the boat or pulling the rope is proof in itself of what can be achieved by children facing adversity. SWD can only continue its work with the continuing support of the Australian public.

Brett Whiteley STORY Brett Whiteley was just 44 when he lost his right arm and leg in a head-on collision with a ute. The ute was overtaking and didn t see Brett coming the other way. JUST A FEW SHORT MONTHS AFTER LOSING HIS RIGHT ARM AND LEG, BRETT WHITELEY IS OUT RACING WITH SWD. It s tough to have things taken away from you. I lost my arm and my leg, my job, my driving license. However, I just made a decision that I wanted to live. And in many ways I was very lucky. I didn t suffer any brain or spinal damage or internal injuries and I healed really quickly. I ve had huge support from my friends and family. And I met a guy in hospital who said I should get out sailing with SWD. I was nervous at first, but I ve been welcomed with open arms. And every time I go out on the boat, I learn new skills.
