LIGHT CAVALRY HAC HORSES MOUTH J U L Y 2 0 1 3 HELLOS AND GOODBYES This month we say goodbye to two of our horses, Sam and Wykeham. Sam has gone to Bedforshire to live with his mum, Julie Percival, who was driving from Bedfordshire to Windsor each time she rode. Wykeham will be having a much quieter life with his mum Alison Anderson in Eton Wick. We will of course miss both of them. We thank them for all their hard work during their time with us and we thank Julie and Alison for having them on working livery, which enabled so many supporting riders to enjoy them. We then say Hello to Zorro who is a very handsome 9 year old 16.1hh dark bay who has fitted in very well so far. He is going through the trial period at the moment and has passed being ridden in the school, jumping and hacking with flying colours so far. We have a feeling he is going to be a very popular boy! Annual Inspection - 9th June 2013 On Sunday 9th June the Light Cavalry held their Annual Inspection. Thankfully the weather was spot on for this event. There were quite a few new horses and riders on parade this year and we are pleased to say that they all passed with flying colours. It was one of the best Inspections to date. We would like to say a massive thank you to all our supporting riders that helped on the day, they were amazing. Horse Trust Open Day - 16th June 2013 Due to our close connection with the Horse Trust we took Freddie and Leo to their open day to do a Tent Pegging Demonstration. Catherine and Gareth were on top form and only missed two pegs in the whole demonstration. Freddie and Leo were very spoilt by the public and enjoyed all the fuss. Once again huge thanks go to the Supporting Riders that came along and helped out on the day.

Legoland Traffic If you are coming from London on the M4 during the summer months and school holidays, getting to Flemish farm can be a bit of a nightmare due to Legoland. The traffic can very easily back up from J6 to J5 and crawl all the way, not what you want when you have planned a leisurely day with horses! If you come off the M4 at J5 and follow the signs to Datchet, (2nd exit at the roundabout) then old Windsor and then Windsor this will cut out all of that traffic. There is also a rather nice pub in Datchet called the Royal Stag! Hope this helps.

POINTERS TO KEEP YOUR HACKS SAFE AND FUN Do not split your ride; keep all the horses in your group together. If your horse is being strong, do not canter in large open spaces. Canter in single file, rather than abreast. Stay in a hand canter- This is a park rule and anyone found deliberately going faster than this, will no longer ride with us. The wardens do have CCTV covering the park. (A hand canter is a canter you would do in the school). When you start to head home, the horses will become more forward. This will happen wherever you are in the park. If your horse has been strong on the way out, then avoid cantering towards home. Do not turn your horse through 180 degrees to head home. Find a tree, a path, anything to go around rather than turning on the spot. Do not canter once you have passed Russell's Pond, it is too close to home. From the traffic lights back to the yard, walk only. Look on the ride sheet to see what else your horse is doing or has done that day and take this into account. Do plan your route so you do not have to rush home. Hacking to Blacknest Gate/ Smiths Lawn is NOT a 2hr hack if done at the correct pace. Please report back to the staff if you do have any issues with any of the horses. If you are unsure of anything please ask.

In 1891 the Light Cavalry was disbanded and absorbed into the Horse Artillery element of the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC). In 1979 the Light Cavalry was reformed as a ceremonial unit of the HAC. Duties include escorting the Lady Mayoress on the Lord Mayor s parade and providing a carpet guard at the Law Courts. The Light Cavalry also provides carpet guards for City Livery Companies. The Light Cavalry can also be seen at County shows around the country providing tent pegging demonstrations or performing their musical ride. In April 2004, the Captain General of the HAC, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, presented to the Light Cavalry a Royal Warrant that enacts the rights and responsibilities of this sub-unit of her famous Regiment. Light Cavalry teams compete throughout the UK in both team chases and skill at arms competitions. The Light Cavalry also organises the international Uniformed Services Show jumping competition held annually at the Kings Troop RHA. To join the Light Cavalry you must have a military back ground. Amongst the Light Cavalry troopers and officers are people that have served in the Falklands, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.
