Muizenberg Accessibility: Removing barriers to public spaces. Refer to SANS 10400-S:2011 Edition 3 of the building code. Note: Facilities that are not in accordance with the requirements of this part of SANS 10400 cannot bear the international symbol. The purpose is to highlight Accessibility issues faced daily by community members and laisse with relevant stakeholders so we can rectify these oversights and make Muizenberg a tourist destination for disabilities as well as creating a blueprint to roll out South Africa wide. How: We wish to create a accessibility routes with markers, colours and accessibility safe zones in public spaces. This will include colour codes and signage. We realise we cannot fix every pavement so we Muizenberg Accessibility: Removing have chosen a route used often used by the disabled, elderly and barriers to public spaces. prams. We then use the Vlei/Royal Road crossing and cross over at the Maynard/Vlei Road crossing. Royal Road has steps on both walking paths and cannot be used. We proceed along Beach Road turn down towards the Pavilion using the access ramp passed the swimming pool, up the ramp behind the Pavilion. Alternate route along Beach Road passed the Pavilion, along Beach Road where we cross at the raised crossing at the traffic circle. There is a camber issue at this crossing as well as parking in the disabled parking bays. Along Beach Road Beach front and both Kerb Cuts/lowered curbs are blocked by parked cars across the kerb cut or on the pavement itself. There is no pedestrian crossing at the Beach front. We proceed along Sidmouth Road has no pavements into the terrible Clarendon Road. We cross at the Atlantic Intersection and go up to Checkers which has no kerb cuts, camber issues and forces prams, walkers and wheelchairs into the busy Atlantic Road.

We don t go down Melrose Road as the new developments have trees in the pavements which have made the pavement too narrow for wheelchair or pram access and business open doors across the pavement restricting flow. Down Atlantic Road into Killarney which has neither kerb cuts nor pavements. Into Palmer Road which has no pavements nor kerb cuts. Holland Road into Milner Roads where cars park on Pavements. Issues: 1. Axminster/Royal Road crossing traffic lights does not offer pedestrians safe crossing time as the green man and the green light for the cars exiting Axminster instantaneous. Cars here dont stop for pedestrians. No kerb cuts of the pavements that access the Waterslides parking area. Image A 2. Royal Road has steps on both walking paths, no kerb cuts and cannot be used at all by any mobility assistance. Here disabilities have to walk in the road Image B 3. No Kerb Cuts on either pavement at the crossing of Vlei and Royal Road. Image C 4. Kerb cuts in Maynard Road are too high. Image C 5. Beach Road tree branches reach across the pavement. Image E 6. Drain hole cover missing for a long time even been reported. Image F 7. Sand stops access on route 1 behind the Pavilion Image G 8. Trees are planted and the pavement is now too narrow for wheelchairs. There are no kerb cuts on the opposite pavement in Melrose Road. Business leave doors open across the pavement obstructing movement. Image M 18. Clarendon Road is bad, too many holes, cars parked over pavements. 19. Atlantic Road Crossing traffic light timer is too short. 20. Camber issues at the intersection 21. Checkers there are camber issues with the pavement. Image N 22. Checkers kerb cuts are not correct 23. There is no access to Checks via the car park due to stones. 24. There should be a pedestrian crossing at the Checkers exit onto Atlantic. 25. Having to travel in the traffic down Atlantic as there are no Kerb cuts at the Killarney Atlantic Road intersection on either pavement. Image O 26. Holland Road no kerb cuts plus cars park on pavements. Image R 29. Railway crossing issues with the gaps between the walkway and railway line are too big. Image S False Bay Station: We use False Bay Station as there are no gates as in Muizenberg Train station which has had no key for the disabled access for 4 years. False Bay Station and has ramps on either platform. We do recommend Muizenberg Station rectify there issues. Terms: Kerb Cuts: Dropped or Lowered Kerb link between a road traffic surface and an elevated or lowered pedestrian pavement. Accessible Building: Building that complies with the requirements of this part of SANS 10400 Accessible route: walking space that complies with the requirements of this part of SANS 10400 Obstruction is any of the following: anything impeding or preventing passage or progress in relation to a building or facility, which denies or removes from persons with disabilities, any supporting or enabling facility for their functioning within the building or facility; or obstacles that unfairly limit or restrict persons with disabilities from enjoying the opportunities provided within a building or facility on equal terms with persons without disabilities.
