Philadelphia Phillies (32-27) vs. Chicago Cubs (34-24) June 7, 2018 Wrigley Field Game No. 59 Home Game No. 29 RHP Nick Pivetta (4-4, 3.48) vs. RHP Tyler Chatwood (3-4, 4.02) A GRAND TIME HAD BY ALL: Down to their last strike, Jason Heyward last night hit a walk-off grand slam to help the Chicago Cubs defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-5 he s the first Cub in nearly 50 years to hit a walk-off grand slam with the team trailing since the legendary Ron Santo did so, Sept. 25, 1968 vs. the Dodgers besides Heyward and Santo, the only other Cub to hit a walk-off grand slam to overcome a deficit at Wrigley Field is Ellis Burton, who did so August 31, 1963 vs. Houston thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. The previous Cub to hit a walk-off grand slam was Alfonso Soriano, whose blast broke a 1-1 tie in the 13th inning, July 27, 2009, vs. Houston. Heyward is hitting.389 (14-for-36) with a.933 OPS in his last eight games since May 29 his homer last night off southpaw Adam Morgan was his first off a lefty since June 13 of last year when he went deep off Josh Smoker. Heyward had also hit his 100th career homer off Adam Morgan, June 6, 2016 at Philadelphia. CURRENT EVENTS: Chicago has won eight of its last 10 games and is 9-3 in its last 12 contests as the team finds itself now just one-game back of the N.L. Central Division leading Brewers (37-25). Jon Lester s outing on Sunday was his 42nd since 2015 in which he threw at least 6.0 innings and allowed one or no runs those 42 such outings are third-most in the majors, trailing only Max Scherzer (44) and Jake Arrieta (44). OPEN AND SHUT CASE: Chicago on Sunday recorded its eighth shutout of the season, tied for the most in the majors with Pittsburgh and the Dodgers, and already matching its total from 2017 the Cubs last had more shutouts in 2016, when they tied for the major league lead (with the Dodgers) with 15 such games.
