The 2018 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was released on September 20, 2018. It was released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI). Key Highlights The 2018 report provides data for 105 countries covering almost 75 percent of the world s population. The most glaring highlight of the report is that Half of all people living in poverty are younger than 18 years old. Some 1.3 billion people live in multidimensional poverty, which is almost a quarter of the population of the 104 countries. The poverty rate in India has nearly halved, falling from 55 percent to 28 percent over the ten-year period (2005-06 to 2015-16). Almost 271 million moved out of poverty.
About MPI MPI was launched in 2010 replacing the erstwhile Human Poverty Index. It complements traditional incomebased poverty. It assesses poverty at the individual level. If someone is deprived in a third or more of ten (weighted) indicators, the global index identifies them as MPI poor. The extent or intensity of their poverty is measured by the number of deprivations they are experiencing. MPI is based on The Alkire-Foster (AF) Method a flexible technique for measuring poverty or well-being. It was developed by Sabina Alkire and James Foster at OPHI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22, 2018 launched the commencement of work for revival of Talcher fertilizer plant in Odisha. This is the first plant in India to have a coal gasification-based fertilizer unit. The plant is being operated by Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd. He also inaugurated the first airport of western Odisha in Jharsuguda under the UDAN ('Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik') scheme. He also dedicated the Garjanbahal coal mines, and the Jharsuguda-Barapali-Sardega rail link to the nation.

The first General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) will take place on October 2, 2018 in New Delhi. The General Assembly will be followed by the Ministerial level Assembly of the ISA in Greater Noida on October 3, 2018. Besides, second RE-INVEST and Indian Ocean Rim Association Energy Ministers Meeting would also take place concurrently till October 5, 2018. About International Solar Alliance It is an initiative and the brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was first proposed in November 2015 at the Wembley Stadium, London. It was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then French President Francois Hollande at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Paris on November 30, 2015. It is an alliance of more than 121 countries, most of them being sunshine countries, which lie either completely or partly between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. It is headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana and its interim Director General is Upendra Tripathy.

Tamil Nadu government on September 21, 2018 announced a novel scheme for the protection of the exotic Neela kurinji (Strobilanthus kunthianus) plants. The tropical Neelakurinji plants are native to the Western Ghats, especially the Nilgiris, has a 12- year flowering cycle. Munnar in Kerala has the largest concentration of Neelakurunji in India. Out of about 450 species of Strobilanthes in the world, 146 are found in India and of them, about 46, in Munnar. The Kurinjimala Sanctuary was declared in 2006 by the Kerala government for protecting the neelakurinji and its habitat.

The United Nations (UN) on September 21, 2018 observed the International Peace Day with the theme The Right to Peace: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70. The theme celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Human Rights Declaration was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations. Also, the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions calls for promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Rima Das National Award-winning feature Village Rockstars has been chosen to represent India in the Best Foreign Language category at the 91st Academy Awards 2019. This was announced by the Film Federation of India (FFI) on September 22, 2018. The announcement was made by SV Rajendra Singh Babu, Chairman, Selection Committee for Oscar Award, FFI. The film had its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and has toured more than 70 prestigious international and national film festivals. A peep in the past The last Indian film that made it to the final five in the Best Foreign Film category list was Ashutosh Gowariker s Lagaan in 2001. Mother India (1958) and Salaam Bombay (1989) are the other two Indian movies to have made it to the top five.
