2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games, officially known as the III Summer Youth Olympic Games, and commonly known as Buenos Aires 2018 will be held from October 6-18, 2018. It is the first Summer Youth Olympic Games to be held outside of Asia. Slogan: "Feel the Future Mascot: Yaguareté (A south-american animal, very similar to the Jaguar). Its name "Pandi" is a combination of the scientific name of the species (Panthera onca) and the relationship of the mascot with the "digital world. Indian team is a contingent of 68 members, including 46 athletes.
History The concept of the Youth Olympic Games came from Austrian industrial manager Johann Rosenzopf in 1998. The Summer YOG is held every four year whereas Winter YOG is held every four leap year. First Summer YOG was held in Singapore in 2010 and Winter YOG was held in Innsbruck, Austria in 2012. Second Summer YOG was held in Nanjing, China in 2014 and Winter YOG was held in Lillehammer, Norway in 2016. Third Winter YOG will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2020. Fourth Summer YOG will be held in Dakar in 2022.

Why in News? The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) is celebrating Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 as International Day of Non-Violence to Environment. As part of its 'Solar Urja through Localisation for Sustainability' (SoULS) project, IIT Bombay will train over one lakh students from 659 schools across India on how to assemble solar lamps on October 2. The SoULS project is part of an initiative of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Objective: Sensitise our future generation" about importance of solar technology. The resolution to observe October 2 as International Day of Non-Violence was adopted on 15 June 2007.

India and Uzbekistan on Oct 1, 2018 inked 17 pacts to boost ties in key areas including defence. It was signed after extensive talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. 17 pacts were signed in areas of defence, agriculture, science and technology and space, besides combating drug-trafficking. India also decided to provide a line of credit of USD 200 million for low-cost homes and other such infrastructure projects in the social sectors of the central Asian country. The two sides agreed to scale the bilateral trade from present USD 300 million to USD 1 billion by 2020. Both the sides agreed to constitute an expert group on India-Uzbekistan Preferential Trade Agreement by the end of 2018.

The 23 rd Eastern Zonal Council meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was held in Ranchi on October 1, 2018. During the meeting, West Bengal and Jharkhand Chief Ministers agreed to find a solution to end the impasse over the Massanjore Dam dispute. Dispute The Massanjore Dam is in Jharkhand, but the Bengal government is its sole owner. The recent controversy is centred around the Bengal government s decision to paint the dam walls and other adjoining constructions in blue and white. Massanjore Dam (also called Canada Dam) is a hydropower generating dam over the Mayurakshi River located at Massanjore near Dumka. It was commissioned in 1955. The Eastern Zonal Council is a forum of four states - Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Why in News The 10 th Agricultural Census data (2015-2016) was released on Oct 1, 2018 by Ministry of Agriculture. Key Highlights More and more females are participating in the management and operation of agricultural lands. However, it showed a 1.53 per cent decline in total operated area at 157.14 million hectare as compared to 2010-11 data. The percentage share of female operational holders has increased from 12.79 per cent in 2010-11 to 13.87 per cent in 2015-16. In terms of operated area, the share of women increased from 10.36 per cent to 11.57 per cent. The average size of operational holding declined to 1.08 hectares (ha) in 2015-16 compared to 1.15 ha in 2010-11. The first census was conducted with reference year 1970-71. The census is conducted every five years to collect data on structural aspects of operational holdings in the country.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 was awarded for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics. One half of the amount was to given to Arthur Ashkin for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems. The other half jointly to Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses. Donnna Strickland is the first woman to win the physics Nobel Prize since Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963. (Marie Curie is the only other female physics Nobel laureate in 1903).
