The Golden Bears are not only protecting a 4-1 home record, but looking to snap a 3-game skid while Minnesota State boasts a 9-game winning streak. NON-CONFERENCE SUMMARY The Golden Bears went 4-2 in non-conference play, splitting with a pair of MIAA in-region contests, picking up three home wins against non-division II opponents by wide 21-plus point margins and falling in a nail-biter at Division I Milwaukee. The early season slate put the team on a neutral floor against Emporia State (L) and Lindenwood (W) in Las Vegas, gave them three home court tune-ups with big wins over Crossroads, Northland and North Central along with a challenging DI road game in which they held a lead for most of the first half and by as many as 11 at Milwaukee. Through it all, only one team (North Central) managed to shoot 40.0% from the floor, as the Rams shot exactly 40.0% in the non-conference finale on Tuesday night, and Milwaukee s 64 points was a non-conference high as the Golden Bear defense was consistent across all three levels of opposition. With the strong defense came wide rebounding margins, winning the rebounding battle handily against everyone except Milwaukee. LAST WEEKEND: WINONA ST 75, CONCORDIA 56 Golden Bears allow season-high 15 3-pointers Warriors become first team to top 65 points against CU CONCORDIA-ST. 2014-15 CU MEN S BASKETBALL DEC 20, 4 PM VS MINNESOTA STATE GANGELHOFF CENTER ST. PAUL, MINN. Joey James became the ninth head men s basketball coach at Concordia-St. Paul in April, 2014 James spent last season as interim head coach at the University of South Dakota where he had been an assistant for 11 seasons prior to his interim appointment. James also played for the Coyotes from 1997-99. This is an exciting day for Concordia basketball, our campus community and the Twin Cities basketball scene, said Rubbelke. Joey possesses the character, commitment, desire and basketball acumen to take Golden Bear basketball to a championship level. We are ecstatic to land a coach of Joey s caliber and are looking towards a bright future with him on the sidelines. In his interim season, James and the Coyotes went 12-18 overall and 6-8 in the Summit League. USD played to a 10-3 record at home in the DakotaDome, had a five-game midseason winning streak and a pair of three game winning streaks (one early, one late). I am very excited about the opportunity to lead the men s basketball program at Concordia University, said James. I would like to thank Tom and the search committee for believing in me and having the confidence in me as their men s basketball coach. My staff and I will work extremely hard to make Concordia a program that competes every night in the highly competitive NSIC. I m eager to get started and look forward to the challenges of building a championship caliber program on and off the court. While James joins Concordia after serving as a Division I head coach at USD, he also has a strong Division II background prior to the Coyotes making the jump. In his first five seasons as a USD assistant, the Coyotes reached the NCAA Division II Tournament. In his 12 total seasons as a USD coach, the program produced a 225-137 (.622) record as James was involved in all aspects of USD basketball. He also helped lead the team to seven-straight 20-plus win along with two conference championships. The Bellevue, Neb. native averaged 24 points per game as a prep at Bellevue West High School before attending Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs. He averaged 15 points as a sophomore and transferred to South Dakota. He averaged eight points as a junior in his first year with the Coyotes, leading the team to a 19-8 season. During James senior season, South Dakota finished 23-7, won the North Central Conference championship and reached the NCAA Tournament. James graduated from South Dakota in 2001 with a degree in recreational science. He earned his master s degree in athletic administration from USD in 2003. James and his wife, Jena, have a son, Jaylen (12), and two daughters, Jayci (8) and Jayna (7). Assistant Coach notes: Top assistant Eric Johnson coached with James last season in his interim 2013-14 season at USD, and previously served as a graduate assistant at USD from 2008-10 under legendary former Coyotes coach Dave Boots while James was on staff... Johnson also coached for two seasons at Division II New Mexico Highlands, a strong program in the Rocky Mountain (RMAC)... he played collegiately at the Division II level in the NSIC at Wayne State where he was a two-time captain, earning a degree in 2008 from WSC with a master s from USD in 2010. Third year assistant Andrew Kuderer just completed his graduate assistant role with the program and remained with the staff when James was brought in... he played for the Golden Bears, going from a walk-on who earned playing time as a true freshman to a two-year starter and senior captain before graduation. First year graudate assistant Roman Gentry joined Concordia after two years as an assistant varsity coach in his home state of Iowa after completing his playing career with two years at USD under Boots with James and Johnson also on staff during his playing career... Gentry was an All-Great West performer at the Division I level after transferring in from Milwaukee, where he suited up in 36 games with four starts over two years with the Panthers. Josh Baker begins his second year as a student assistant on the Golden Bear staff after spending a year as a student assistant at Hamline University, and another as a player on the Piper roster... he ll look to pursue a master s degree with an eye towards a future as a college basketball coach. It is unclear as to which years and which individuals coached from 1912-21. Among them were M.L. Gerber, Capt. Frank Drassal and C. Rothfuss. Siebert was a 1930 graduate before playing 11 years of Major League Baseball. He returned each fall after the MLB season ended to coach basketball at Concordia before moving full time to U of Minn. baseball.
