The Vikings (11-17, 7-10) seem to have hit their stride and it could not have come at a better time as the Big Sky Conference looms next week in Reno. PSU currently sits in the number-eight seed in the Big Sky and will have a first-round game on Tuesday against either Northern Colorado or Sacramento State. That will be determined following Saturday s games as the order of 7-8-9-10 (Montana State, Portland State, Northern Colorado, Sacramento State) has yet to be established. PSU can move up to number seven with a Saturday win and a Montana State loss. All other scenarios have the Vikings as an eight-seed. PSU picked up another win on Thursday, 89-81, over Northern Arizona. It was big night as SO F Isaiah Pineiro recorded a career-high 31 points, and GR F Cameron Forte posted the first triple-double in Portland State history (20 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists). That victory was the second in a row and third in four outings for the Vikings. PSU has averaged 90.5 points per game and shot.551 from the field in those games. Southern Utah comes off a 69-63 overtime loss at Sacramento State on Thursday night. The Thunderbirds are currently 5-22 on the season, 3-14 in the Big Sky Conference. They have a 3-12 road record. Due to the Big Sky s unbalanced schedule, PSU is meeting Southern Utah for the first time this season. Saturday s game at the Stott Center will feature Senior Night as the Viking team will recognize Forte, GR G Donivine Stewart and SR C Collin Spickerman playing in their final home game. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m. Live video, audio and stats for the game are available at www.goviks.com. The Big Sky Conference Tournament runs Mar. 8-12 at the Reno Events Center in Reno, NV. SR C Collin Spickerman added 13 points (6-9 FG, 1-2 FT) and a season-high six blocked shots. The Vikings shot.604 for the game. Despite the loss, Portland State shot over 60% for the second game in a row against Montana (2/6). PSU was 29-47 from the field (.617). GR F Cameron Forte posted his fifth straight 20-10 road game at Idaho State (2/11), with 26 points (11-15 FG, 4-6 FT) and 13 rebounds. He has averaged 27.0 points and 13.8 rebounds over that span. GR F Cameron Forte led the Vikings in every statistical category, scoring 23 points (8-11 FG, 1-1 3-pt FG, 6-6 FT) with 16 rebounds, five assists, four steals, two blocked shots and four turnovers in a loss to Idaho (2/18). Portland State put up its most points in eight years and shot a season-best.647 from the field in a 107-91 win over Eastern Washington (2/20). GR F Cameron Forte scored a game-high 32 points (14-20 FG, 4-7 FT) with nine rebounds for his third 30-point game of the season. Five Vikings scored in double figures as GR G Donivine Stewart had his best game of the year with 13 points (6-8 FG, 1-1 FT), eight assists, six rebounds, four steals and no turnovers. JR G Calaen Robinson hit a game-winning three-point field goal with two seconds remaining as the Vikings beat Northern Colorado, 89-86 (2/27). Robinson scored 14 points off the bench and was one of five Vikings in double figures. PSU shot.571 as a team in the win. GR F Cameron Forte scored 17 points with five assists. SO F Isaiah Pineiro posted a career-high 31 points (12-19 FG, 1-3 3-pt, 6-9 FT) wiht 12 rebounds in the Vikings 89-81 win over Northern Arizona (3/3). It was PSU s second win in a row and third in four games. GR F Cameron Forte became the first Viking in history to record a triple-double when he had 20 points (7-14 FG, 6-7 FT), 15 rebounds and 10 assists in PSU s win over Northern Arizona (3/3). 2015-16 SEASON NOTES TUCKER WILL REDSHIRT 2015-16 SEASON, DAVYDOV INJURED AND OUT JR F Braxton Tucker will not play in 2015-16 as he continues his recover from a knee injury. Tucker suffered the injury late in the 2014-15 season and has been slow to heal. He was the Vikings top returning scorer (11.5) and rebounder (5.3) coming into 15-16 but had not seen game action through non-conference play, so the decision was made to redshirt. Tucker, a 6-6 forward from Tacoma, will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Vikings... FR G Daniel Davydov is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in practice in mid-february. Davydov had plaed in three games, scoring six points in nine minutes. NON-CONFERENCE REVIEW Portland State wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 4-7 record. The Vikings started 3-2, but lost five straight during the month of December. An inconsistent lineup that included six different starting units in the first 10 games made it difficult for the Vikings to maintain offensive consistency. However, they managed to average 78.0 points despite giving up more than 14 turnovers per game and shooting just.648 at the free throw line. PSU was 3-2 at home, 1-5 on the road. WHITE LEAVES PROGRAM JR G Bryce White left the program for personal reasons on Jan. 22. He averaged 11.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 13 games this season. PORTLAND STATE IN THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE Portland State is in its 20th season of Big Sky Conference play. PSU won the 2004-05 and 2007-08 Big Sky Conference regular season titles. The Vikings have had eight winning records in conference play and earned 12 Big Sky Tournament berths in 16 seasons eligible, winning the 2008 and 2009 Big Sky Conference Tournament titles. Portland State was picked to place sixth in the Big Sky Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, seventh in the Big Sky Media Poll. The 18-game Big Sky Conference schedule is unbalanced due to the 12-team membership. The Vikings will not travel to Northern Arizona and Southern Utah this season, and will not host North Dakota and Northern Colorado. This marks the first year in Big Sky history in which all 12 teams will qualify for the post-season tournament. It also marks the first time that the tournament will be hosted at a neutral site; Reno, NV. The tournament takes place on Mar. 8-12 with the top four teams earning first-round byes into the quarterfinals. The Vikings are 9-10 all-time in the Big Sky Conference Tournament. VIKINGS SIGN HENDERSON, RUMEL FOR 2016-17 Portland State men s basketball coach Tyler Geving has announced the signing of two high schoolers to National Letters of Intent for the 2016-17 academic year. The Vikings have signed Tyrell Henderson of Tempe, AZ and Brendan Rumel of Tucson, AZ during the early signing period. We are excited about signing two kids who are outstanding students and who are both high character kids, said Geving. They are both very disciplined on and off the court and these are traits we are looking for in our recruits. These are two players we expect to be big contributors over the next four years. Henderson is a 6-3 combo guard who attends Corona del Sol High School. He is part of a program that has routinely won state championships. It is also the former high school of current Viking guard Calaen Robinson. Tyrell comes from Corona Del Sol program where they have won four consecutive Arizona State Championships, said Geving. He brings a winning attitude to our program as well as being an outstanding student. Tyrell is a versatile player who takes pride in guarding the other teams top player. He has a high basketball IQ and I m excited to coach him over the next four years. Rumel, a 6-10 forward, plays at Rincon High School. As a junior he averaged 17.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. He also has shooting range for a big man, hitting 25 three-pointers over the past two seasons. 2015-16 Viking Basketball 7

Brendan is another outstanding student with high character. We are looking for him to make a big impact on our program. CANDA SIGNS AID AGREEMENT WITH VIKINGS Bryce Canda has signed an aid agreement with Portland State for the 2016-17 academic year. Canda, a native of Portland who prepped at Grant High School, played two seasons of basketball at Central Wyoming. Originally he signed with Hawai i in 2015 but did not qualify so he was no longer bound to that school. Canda, who is not competing this year, has completed his junior college coursework and will enter Portland State. The aid agreement provides financial support but is non-binding. In 2014-15, Canda averaged 19.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game at Central Wyoming, shooting.468 from the field,.415 from three-point range and.796 at the free throw line. He was named first team All-Region 9. As a freshman at Central Wyoming, Canda shot.461 from three-point range. While a senior at Grant High School in 2012-13, Canda averaged 12.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists. It is nice to get another local kid, said Viking Coach Tyler Geving. Bryce can play the point and the wing for us and is a capable shooter. He is a bigger guard, which we like. Most important, we want to keep the local talent home. To get a player of his abilities, we are very fortunate. VIKING ONE-LINERS (and sometimes two) PSU has three players that competed for other Division I schools: Calaen Robinson (Arizona State), Cameron Forte (Georgia) and Donivine Stewart (SIUE). SR F Collin Spickerman returned home after earning NWAACC Region Player of the Year awards. Spickerman prepped less than 10 miles from the PSU campus at Portland s Jesuit High School. He spent one season at Alaska Anchorage and one season at Clark (WA) College. In 2013-14 he was the NWAACC West Region Player of the Year after averaging 17.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots per game. JR G Zach Gengler was the Oregon 5A High School Player of the Year in 2012-13. JR C Namdi Okonkwo is the first 7-foot player in Portland State s Big Sky era (1996-2015) and perhaps ever. PSU previously has had five players that stood 6-11 since reinstating basketball for the 1996-97 season. Portland State is in its 20th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference and Division I. PSU played basketball from 1946-1981 before discontinuing the program. Basketball was reinstated for the 1996-97 season. Construction of the new The Viking Pavilion will begin in January 2016. The Pavilion will consist of an upgraded Stott Center facility, including a new arena for Viking basketball, as well as athletic training enhancements, academic upgrades and overall facility enhancements. The Viking Pavilion will more than double the capacity of PSU s home court (to be situated on the east side of the building) to somewhere between 3,000-4,000 seats. The arena is expected to be available for play beginning in January 2018. Portland State received public recognition from the NCAA in 2014 for being among the top 10 percent of teams in multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for the four-year period ending in 2012-13. PSU basketball, which received APR sanctions six years ago, is now among the top programs in the nation in APR scores. Head Coach Tyler Geving has led the program to that accomplishment. PSU had the only men s basketball program in the Big Sky Conference and among the state of Oregon s four Division I programs to be among the top 10 percent recognized by the NCAA. Head Coach Tyler Geving and Associate Head Coach Jeff Hironaka were both assistant coaches on the 2000-01 Seattle Pacific basketball staff. Special Advisor Barry Adams, a high school coaching legend in the state of Oregon, was elected to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame on March 10, 2014. Adams spent more than four decades as a prep coach in the state. Assistant Coach Michael Plank spent a portion of his summer working with the Costa Rican National Team. Former Viking Ime Udoka played seven seasons in the NBA. He started 75 games for the Portland Trail Blazers in 2006-07. Udoka is now an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, and won an NBA title with the team in 2013-14. Julius Thomas, who holds Portland State records for games played (121), field goal percentage in a season and career (.671/.663), and career wins (78) was a two-time Pro Bowler for the Denver Broncos. Thomas played on two Big Sky Conference Championship/NCAA Tournament teams (2007-08, 2008-09) at PSU. He competed in Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. Thomas signed a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015. 2015-16 Viking Basketball 8

Most recent game, Mar. 3, 2016: PORTLAND STATE 89, NORTHERN ARIZONA 81 Portland, OR - Viking forwards Isaiah Pineiro and Cameron Forte were the dynamic duo on Thursday night. Pineiro went for a career-high 31 points while Forte recorded a triple-double in leading Portland State to an 89-81 Big Sky Conference win over Northern Arizona at the Stott Center. Pineiro hit 12-19 shots from the field and 6-9 free throws for his 31, adding in 12 rebounds. Perhaps more remarkable was the performance of Forte, who came into the game as PSU s leading scorer and rebounder. He added passing to the list on this night, compiling 20 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double in Portland State men s basketball history. That forward combo had 51 points and 27 rebounds for the Vikings as they won for the third time in four games. They were pretty good, said Geving of his two inside players. Pineiro struggled a little bit on the road trip last week, but he is such a competitive kid. He had a good week of practice and showed with a phenomenal game tonight. And obviously Forte s triple-double is pretty special. I am excited for him and that just shows you how unselfish he has been this season. Portland State figured to score points in this one. The Vikings had averaged 91 points over their previous three games, and NAU came in allowing 82 points per game - second-worst in the Big Sky Conference. Pineiro took advantage of that, scoring 13 in the opening 12 minutes of the game. The Vikings went on a 24-7 run midway through the half to take control with Pineiro getting 12 points in that rally. Pineiro had 19 points by halftime as the Vikings built a 39-29 lead. Forte had only four points, but had already logged seven rebounds and five assists. A 17-4 run by the Vikings early in the second half all but put the game away. The only drama at that point was whether Forte could pull off the first triple-double in PSU history. He reached that milestone with a little more than six minutes to play, hitting Calaen Robinson on a fast-break layin. PSU s largest lead was 27 points at 70-43 with 9:48 to play. But the Lumberjacks were able to lop 14 points off that edge over the next five minutes. PSU again pushed the lead to 18, but NAU cut it to single digits in the closing seconds. Portland State shot 34-66 from the field for a.515 shooting percentage. NAU was 32-69 for.464. Rebounding was even at 37-37, but the Vikings were able to score 22 points off 14 Lumberjacks turnovers. In addition to the fine play of Pineiro and Forte, Robinson scored 16 points with five assists. Zach Gengler added 10 points and four assists. Kris Yanku led Northern Arizona with 32 points, five assists and five steals. Ako Kaluna added 17 points and 18 rebounds. Portland State improves to 11-17 with the win, 7-10 in the Big Sky. Northern Arizona dropped to 5-23, 3-14 in conference play. GAME NOTES: Portland State ended a five-game losing streak to Northern Arizona which dated back three seasons Forte had his 11th double-double of the season, Pineiro recorded his third double-double PSU is 7-6 at home. 1 ZACH GENGLER Junior 2V Guard 6-2 180 Silverton, OR Silverton HS Winston and DaShaun Wiggins. A talented combo guard who can handle the ball as well as shoot it... a skilled player and capable scorer... has a great future in the program... will be called on to really step up in 2015-16 after the graduation of Tim Douglas, Gary COACH GEVING SAYS: Zach needs to continue to improve like he did last year. The second half of the season he played really well for us and took on the toughest defensive assignment every night, guarding the other team s best player. The main thing for Zach right now is his shooting percentage needs to go up. We need to get him to shoot close to 50% and his three-point percentage needs to be near 40%. He got a lot of confidence toward the end of last year, and we see a more confident player this year.
