MEN S BASKETBALL NO. 12 UNION UNIVERSITY (22-8) VS. CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY (18-14) Date: Saturday, March 5, 2005 Location: Fred DeLay Gymnasium - Jackson, Tennessee Game Notes... The Union Bulldogs are ready for action after finishing the regular season in a first place tie with Trevecca Nazarene in the TranSouth final standings. Union, seeded #2 in the TranSouth will host #3 seeded Cumberland University in a semifinal game of the conference tournament. Cumberland is coming off a first round 91-79 win over Freed-Hardeman. Union had a bye during first round action. Union swept Cumberland in both regular season games winning the first game at Union 70-67 and then winning at Cumberland 90-81. Cumberland is playing without their leading scorer and 2004 conference player of the year, Alonzo Evans for the remainder of their season. In the last meeting, Evans tallied 31 points including seven three-pointers. On Thursday, the 2005 TranSouth Conference postseason honors were released with Union having five players named. Trevecca Nazarene led the way with six players honored. Corey Burkett was named the TranSouth Newcomer of the Year. Also, for the first time in recent history, Union had three players named to the first team, including Burkett, Ben Frederick, and Pierry Valmera. Bruno Martinessi was a second team selection while Courtney Jones was named to the All-Freshman team. Cumberland s Hickerson and Hampton were also named first team performers. Game Facts... Opponent s Record vs. Union: 8-27 Last time these teams met... February 14, 2005 at Cumberland. Union defeated Cumberland 90-81 after trailing at halftime 38-36 at halftime. Union s Ben Frederick led five players in double figues with 22 points. Pierry Valmera added 15 points, Courtney Jones scored 14 points, Corey Burkett tallied 13 points, and Bruno Martinessi scored 11 points. Cumberland was led by Elonzo Evans with 31 points including 7-of-11 three pointers. Leroy Hickerson added 17 points and Hollis Hampton tallied 12 points.
