Page 1 of 5 MODEL SHIPWAYS KITS! We have a large number of kits in stock by the American Model Shipways Company. They are well presented kits with good instructions and some of the best sets of drawings we have ever seen. They would be recommended for the more experienced modeller due to the amount of detail but would not be beyond the capabilities of an intermediate modeller who is prepared to put extra time aside. Among the kits is a tug boat Taurus in 1:87 scale which conforms to HO railway layouts. We often get enquiries for scenic ship models for model railway enthusiasts wanting a model for their layouts. HO is the most popular railway scale so this should make a lot of people rather happy! Kits are well priced starting at approx. $150.00 to about $350.00. Taurus being the odd man out at only $75.00 (or odd woman out as boats are referred to as she!) Below are a few examples of the range. Some have solid wood hulls and others are plank on bulkhead. GERMAN POCKET BATTLESHIP GRAF SPEE Premium Edition This highly detailed Acadamy Kit has received rave reviews and is regarded by some as the most historically accurate portrayal of the ship. It is to the large 1:350 scale which allows for lots of detail. This is the premium version kit with lots of brass etch, brass gun barrels, brass chain, name plate and WOODEN decks. The price is $115.00

Page 2 of 5 MODEL BOATS COMMEMORATIVE SPECIAL 1950-2010 We anticipate this magazine to arrive about the end of May. Some of the pre-released promotion states as follows: Celebrating 60 years as the World s leading model boating magazine. Vintage Gold - A choice selection of feature articles from our archives, still relevant today! A look at the development of model boat kits and a full review of the Model Slipway s mid range tug kit Dutch Courage. The model boating scene today - round up by Paul Freshney including his future plans for the magazine. Building a classic cabin cruiser from plans and installing modern running-gear and radio equipment. Charting the history of model boating, decade by decade. The National Model Boating Associations. A brief history and how they support the hobby today. Steam in model boats looking at the use of this traditional power source since 1950 and what s available on the market 60 years on. An award-winning scale Bell SK5 Hovercraft project from the 1980 s for more experienced modellers. Adrian is looking forward to reading this Special and he will probably be missing from the shop for at least a week!!! It will bring back some good memories as his own collection goes back to 1954. While on the subject, if anyone has copies from the first three years, we will be happy to make an offer! SMALL PADDLE WHEELS & PADDLE STEAMER HELM Another addition to the ever increasing range of paddle wheel kits is one at only 50mm dia. Apparently mini paddlers are being built and these wheels are the driving force. We haven t personally seen these mini boats, but the concept sounds a lot of fun. Maybe paddle steamer racing would not be out of the question and it could be staged on very small sailing waters. The kits cost $33.00 and are to a very high standard. The helm is at 1:24 scale and although for the P.S. Adelaide, could be adapted for any paddle steamers at this scale. It also comes in kit form but when complete, would set of any open bridge in style. Priced at $23.00 it will save you many hours of scratch building as these wheels have never been commercially available.

Page 3 of 5 REPORTS ON RECENT EVENTS Model Makers & Collectors Association Exhibition We had a great time in Tasmania at the Model Makers and Collectors Association Exhibition. Although this was a reconnaissance visit by us, several people thought we were exhibiting and were looking out for us at the show. This proved to be a positive, as we did actually catch up with many of our Tasmanian customers and we really enjoyed this. This is a bi-annual show and it was well run with many interested visitors viewing the wonderful exhibits. The main features were Model Boats, Trains, Aircraft and Cars. So there was something for everyone and well worth a trip to Tassie. Clubs from Tasmania and the mainland exhibited their model boats and the display interested many. David Glasson from the Scarborough Park Model Boat Club in N.S.W. won Boat of the Show with his Motor Launch. As with many of the modellers, David had worked hard during the year to get the model ready for the show although it is still not 100% complete. Here are some highlights from the event. 1. Dave Hunt - right (boating organizer for the event) 2. Part of club displays 3. Indoor pool action. 4., 5. & 6. General model shots. 7. Adrian fearlessly confronting a local Tasmanian in order to gain entry to the show!!!

Page 4 of 5 AUSTRALIAN MICRO MAGIC CUP A very successful event was held in Canberra over the Easter period. We were emailed by quite a number of the competitors at the conclusion of the Regatta telling us of the great sailing and the very fair competition displayed by all skippers. Organization was first class and the event was very well run. The event was won by Peter Davison from Queensland with Malcolm Kampe, runner up and also from Queensland. Victorian, Frank Katers took out third place. Float-a-Boat provided the Association with a Perpetual Achievement Award to be presented to the highest placed skipper participating in their first major championship. Barry Larkin from Victoria won this trophy from a field of ten skippers who met the requirements of this award. A teams event was also held with teams from Qld, N.S.W. and Vic. and a combined team comprising competitors from A.C.T, S.A., and W.A. The teams trophy was won by Queensland. Congratulations to all the trophy winners and we are sure this event will go from strength to strength as the class continues to grow. Barry Larkin with the Float-a-Boat award. The shield features a half - model of a Micro Magic carved from Huon Pine and is half full size. LILYDALE RADIO YACHT CLUB 10th Birthday Dinner The first decade is a milestone in any club s history and it was a great pleasure to receive invitations in the mail to be special guests of this very active Melbourne club at this memorable event. Starting with humble beginnings with Andy Milne at the helm, the club has grown to be one of the largest yachting clubs in Australia. They work a very successful handicap system which allows any boat to race and any standard of sailing to have a chance of winning. Many fine skippers have developed as a result of the accepting and encouraging atmosphere. The evening was very well catered for and there was lots of chit-chat and reminiscing throughout the night. There was a very good video presentation tracing the history of the club and it s activities. We are very grateful to the members of this club for supporting Float-a-Boat as they do, and we will endeavour to continue to support the members with the best equipment and service to enable them to enjoy their hobby to the full. A great night had by all!

Page 5 of 5 NEW TROPHY INTRODUCED The Float-a Boat Trophy assembly line was hard at it again with a new trophy presented to the Lilydale Radio Yacht Club. It is a similar concept to the one presented to the Micro Magic Association, with the emphasis being the encouragement of the new skipper into the hobby. In this, its first year, it was won by Leigh Peterson who called by the shop recently to thank us on his way to the engraver. Not to miss a photo opportunity, Rhonda whipped out the camera and before he could blink, preserved the enclosed shot for posterity. Well done Leigh! Club Champion next year??? COMING EVENT ST. GEORGE MODEL BOAT CLUB 24th Birthday Regatta - Sunday 16 Located at the Scarborough Park, Barton Street, Monterey, N.S.W. The St. George Model Boat Club has sixty members ranging in age from mid teens to mid eighties and covering the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area. The club has planned a special Regatta featuring sailing models as well as a static display. Several Model Boat Clubs from Sydney and Interstate have been invited to participate and they extend an invitation to any club members or modellers from Interstate who would like to join in the activities on the day. The display will include models of Commercial Vessels, Navy Ships, Speed Boats and sailing models.. Models cover the full power spectrum - sail, electric, steam, nitro and petrol. If any of our readers are visiting Sydney at that time we are sure you would be very welcome to come and watch the event. Further information can be obtained from Geoffrey Field via the club by email on info@stgmbc.org.au
