Ball State staff head coach rich maloney Rich Maloney returned as head coach of the Ball State baseball team for the 2013 season, having spent a previous stint coaching the Cardinals from 1996-2002. In 2013, Maloney led Ball State to a 31-24 overall record, a 15-12 Mid-American Conference mark and an appearance in the MAC Tournament Championship Game. The 31-24 record marked the eighth best turnaround in the NCAA from 2012 to 2013 and helped Ball State to a second-place finish in the MAC West Division. Maloney helped pitcher Scott Baker win the 2013 Gregg Olson Award as the nation s comeback player of the year and coached six members of the 2013 team to Academic All- MAC recognition. Prior to returning to Ball State, Maloney served as the head baseball coach at Michigan for 10 seasons, guiding the Wolverines to a 341-244 overall record. He led Michigan to three Big Ten Conference titles, two Big Ten Tournament titles and the 2007 NCAA Regional title. He was also named the 2007 and 2008 Big Ten and ABCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. Maloney also guided the Wolverines to Big Ten Tournament berths in seven of his 10 seasons, including a streak of six straight from 2003-08. His teams also made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008). Prior to being named the head coach at Michigan, Maloney amassed a 256-144-1 (.640) overall record in seven years as Ball State s head coach, including a 141-60 (.701) ledger in MAC games. Maloney guided the Cardinals to four MAC West Division titles (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001) and three MAC regular season championships (1998, 1999, 2001). Maloney also led the Ball State baseball program to the only two 40-win seasons in program history - - 42 in 1999 and 40 in 1997 - - and was named the 1998 and 2001 MAC Coach of the Year. Over his 18-year collegiate coaching career, Maloney has mentored 51 different players who have been drafted, including five first round draft picks, with all five playing at Ball State. In 2002, he helped Bryan Bullington become the only No.1 overall draft pick in both Ball State and MAC history in any sport when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Later the same day, Luke Hagerty was chosen with the 32nd overall pick by the Chicago Cubs in the supplemental first round, giving Maloney two first round draft picks in the same season. A third-team All-American as a senior shortstop at Western Michigan, Maloney earned two degrees at Western Michigan -- a bachelor s degree in 1986, and a master s in 1993. A two-time captain and two-time All-MAC first-team selection, Maloney was twice named to the all-district squad. A 13th-round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves in 1986, Maloney spent six seasons in the Atlanta Braves organization, earning all-star status in the Appalachian League for the Pulaski Braves and in the South Atlantic League for the Sumter Braves. He played for former Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox manager Grady Little before retiring from pro baseball following the 1991 season at Greenville (AA). He served as an assistant coach for legendary Fred Decker at Western Michigan from 1992-95 before accepting the head coaching position at Ball State in May 1995. Maloney, and his wife, the former Kelle Lynn Seitz, have two sons -- Alex and Nicholas -- and one daughter, Natalie. Alex is a freshman member of the 2013-14 Ball State baseball team. maloney record Career Head Coaching Record: 657-425-1 (19 Seasons) Ball State Head Coaching Record: 316-181-1 (9 Seasons) Mid-American Conference Coaching Record: 168-75 (9 Seasons) MAC West Division Titles: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 MAC Regular Season Championships: 1998, 1999, 2001 MAC Coach of the Year: 1998, 2001 Year School Record League Finish Conference 1996 Ball State 32-20-1 16-14 T-5th MAC 1997 Ball State 40-19 21-10 2nd MAC 1998 Ball State 39-18 23-8 1st MAC West 1999 Ball State 42-18 25-6 1st MAC 2000 Ball State 34-23 18-8 1st MAC West 2001 Ball State 35-23 21-5 1st MAC West 2002 Ball State 34-23 17-9 2nd MAC West 2003 Michigan 30-27 16-14 3rd Big Ten 2004 Michigan 34-26 19-13 T-3rd Big Ten 2005 Michigan 42-19 17-12 4th Big Ten NCAA Regional 2006 Michigan 43-21 23-9 1st Big Ten Big Ten Tourney Champions NCAA Regional 2007 Michigan 42-19 21-7 1st Big Ten NCAA Regional Champions 2008 Michigan 46-14 26-5 1st Big Ten Big Ten Tourney Champions NCAA Regional 2009 Michigan 30-25 9-15 7th Big Ten 2010 Michigan 35-22 14-10 2nd Big Ten 2011 Michigan 17-37 7-16 10th Big Ten 2012 Michigan 22-34 8-16 10th Big Ten 2013 Ball State 31-24 15-12 2nd MAC West 2014 Ball State 27-13 11-3 Todd linklater Second season at Ball State Alma Mater: Lake Forest 96; IPFW 99 Coached Scott Baker to a record-setting season in 2013 and MAC Pitcher of the Year honors, as well as the Gregg Olson Award as the nation s comeback player of the year scott french Second season at Ball State Alma Mater: Ball State 03 Former four-year baseball letterwinner at Ball State where he played under Coach Maloney Served as a volunteer assistant coach at Ball State from 2003-07 Travis minix First season at Ball State Drafted by Tampa Bay in the 1999 MLB Draft Played professional baseball from 1999-2012, including parts of six seasons in Triple-A Helped Ball State to 1998 and 1999 MAC Championships
