PBTC NEWSLETTER Summer 2011 PBTC Championships and 50th Anniversary Gala to be postponed until fall You may have heard that the Annual Pacific Beach Club Championship Tournament and the Golden Gala celebrating our 50th Anniversary have been postponed. We apologize for any inconvenience, but given the City s delays and the consequent construction time-line, we must reschedule these events until the fall. The good news: these events will take place at our newly transformed club. Please be prepared to sign-up for the tournament when the new date is announced because your participation helps our club. But more importantly, your name will be engraved on the trophy as the club s best! Play singles, doubles or mixed doubles. The tournament is only one weekend and food and drinks will be provided. We also hope you will join us in celebrating our club s 50th Anniversary at the Golden Gala. The Gala will take place the weekend of the tournament, on the Saturday evening and will include dinner/drinks, a feature match, a raffle, and a dedication to the new construction at the Club. The Gala is free for members but donations are gratefully accepted! We are really excited and we look forward to announcing the new date. If you have any questions about the tournament or the Gala, please contact PB Tennis Club s events committee chair Kate Bennett at kbenn@earthlink.net. [1]

A special thank you to Kate Bennett for all she has done and continues to do She is our Events Committee Chair and she has pulled together a fantastic group to plan and prepare for the Club Championships/Golden Gala, the Turkey Tournament, the revitalization of Friday Night socials, and other events yet to come. Thanks to Kate and everyone on the committee. Clubhouse Update Construction begins! Because of the generosity and extreme patience of PB Tennis Club members, our long awaited dream for enhancing our club is underway! Please be aware and help us out by remaining patient and looking out for notices--via email and postings at the club--regarding construction and possible disruption of court usage. The website will also be updated as frequently as possible to alert you to any major changes in court accessibility. Please check the website. The major elements of the landscaping project should be complete in September. Also, please know that we are moving forward with the court and bench naming plaques and the donor brick area-- don t worry, we ll get every donor s approval before engraving occurs! To raise additional funds, we will be making more brick donations available (along with other opportunities). The brick donation area will be the pathways leading to and surrounding the center tree. If you have yet to donate to the club, you will be given an opportunity; we will publish the details very soon. If you have any questions regarding previous or future donations, please contact Amy Endres at aoendres@san.rr.com. If you would like to help with or have any questions about the project, please contact our VP/ construction guru Dale Jensen at dale@techbilt.com. Member Directory available on-line! STEVE S COLUMN Juniors make waves at prestigious tournaments It is a very exciting time at the Pacific Beach Tennis Club. The re-model is in full force and the junior tennis program is bringing in kids and families from all over San Diego. Some of them are the best in Southern California. A special thanks to Simon Shen and Tom Svadja for their hard work in making this program such a success. We have had some special results from our on own Zach Svadja. He made it to the quarterfinals of the Southern California Sectionals as an eight year old. The last person do that was Michael Chang. Also, Zoe Scandalis, congratulations for qualifying into the main draw of the Mercury Insurance Open in La Costa. She is off to USC on full scholarship in September but we are sure to hear more of her in the future. I would also like to thank all the club members who have voiced their support of the new and improved junior program at the club. They are a lot more juniors playing in our program and hopefully we will breed the next generation of tennis. Maybe, these kids will inspire you to practice a little harder or just get out to the courts a little more often. Zoe keeps her eye on the prize!
