K. Matheson s license to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 27 March 2016 and to expire on Tuesday 29 March 2016, on which day he may ride. RACE 2: Benchmark 62 Handicap 2350m: Butane A post race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed it had a poor recovery rate. Hoagy Raced wide in the middle stages. Miss Del Toro Overraced, whilst being eased to obtain cover, in the early stages. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the mare, in particular 1
racing midfield, jockey B. Evans stated that his mount typically leads or settles on the speed. B. Evans stated that at its most recent race start he rode the mare with vigour out of the barriers to lead the event however in his opinion it worked hard within itself when he asked it to settle throughout the middle stages. B. Evans stated that being up in distance today he was reluctant to ride the mare with vigour early and risk having it race in the same manner. B. Evans advised that he felt his mount would work to a position outside the lead or preferably take a sit with cover off the leaders which he thought would be beneficial to it settling and running out the distance. B. Evans stated that his mount quickly obtained a position trailing the leaders however his mount was shuffled further back when Kingston Time improved around the field and took up the running approaching the 1400m. B. Evans stated that at the 1000m his mount dropped the bit and was under full pressure from the 700m. B. Evans added that whilst his mount was inclined to lay out down the straight it only went to the line in a fair manner. B. Evans added that this is the second time his mount has performed poorly when it has settled back off the speed and in his opinion appreciates racing on the pace. When questioned, trainer Mr R. Rohde stated that he had freshened the mare up for the 1900m journey at Armidale on 14 March 2016 however it was scratched behind the barriers that day. Mr Rohde added that bearing in mind the mare was up 450m on that distance today he had genuine concerns it would not race genuinely if ridden with vigour early and he felt it would still show enough natural speed to settle forward regardless. Mr Rohde agreed with the sentiments of B. Evans in that the mare does need to race forward to perform at its best and indicated that in future they will allow the mare to muster her own speed and stride forward rather than endeavour to settle with cover. A post race veterinary examination of the mare revealed it to have a poor recovery rate. B. Evans was reprimanded for using his whip on 2 additional occasions to the 5 permitted prior to the 100m (AR137A(5)(a)(i)). Would Be a Bonus Inclined to overrace in the early stages. Murphy stated that his mount quickly mustered speed in the early stages and was able to lead the event. J. Murphy added that in the middle stages he allowed his mount to travel how it was comfortable before asking it to sprint at the entrance to the straight. Stewards advised J. Murphy that he must work on his ability to judge pace and that his mount would have been better served with cheaper sectionals in the middle stages and working into its sprint. Near the 1000m was checked when awkwardly placed on heels. An inquiry into the reason the gelding was checked passing the 100m was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
